Abstract: In this paper we introduce an innovative application aiming at combining large, tablet-based and headmounted displays for collaborative mobile mixed reality design reviews. Our research and development is motivated by two use scenarios: automotive and architectural design review involving real users from Page/Park architects and Elasis FIAT. Our activities are supported by the EU IST project IMPROVE. It covers activities in the areas of: HMD development using unique OLED technology, markerless tracking, augmented reality rendering, image calibration for large tiled displays, collaborative tablet-based and projection wall oriented interaction and stereoscopic video streaming for mobile users. The paper gives an overview of the hardware and software developments within IMPROVE and concludes with results from first user test.

Abstract: Enterprise Architecture approaches are used to provide rigorous descriptions of the organization-wide environment, manage the alignment of deployed services to the organization's mission, end ensure a clear separation of the concerns addressed in an architecture. Thus, an effective Enterprise Architecture approach assists in the management of relations and dependencies of any components of the organization environment and supports the integration and evolution of the architecture. However, the quality of that approach is strongly influenced by the precision of the architecture context description, a fact which is not always recognized. This paper focuses on the architecture context description and addresses the gap between the stakeholders' concerns and the resulting architecture. Based on a combination of established references and standards, we show how an explicit integration of the architecture context into the architecture model improves the linking of concerns and key elements of the architecture vision. We apply our approach to a subject of increasing concern in the Information Systems area: longevity of information. Digital preservation is an interdisciplinary problem, but existent initiatives address it in a very domain-centric way, making it impossible to integrate documented knowledge into an overall organization architecture. We analyze several references and models and derive a description of the architecture context and a capability model that supports incremental development through an explicit distinction between systems and their capabilities. The presented approach allows not just any organization to assess their current digital preservation awareness and evolve their architectures to address this challenge, but in particular demonstrates the added value of an explicit architecture context model in an Enterprise Architecture approach.

Abstract: In the paper, we propose a new metric for the minimization of area in the generic problem of multiple constant multiplications, and demonstrate its effectiveness for digital FIR filters. Previous methods use the number of required additions or subtractions as a cost function. We make the observation that not all of these operations have the same design cost. In the proposed algorithm, a minimum area solution is obtained by considering area estimates for each operation. To this end, we introduce accurate hardware models for addition and subtraction operations in terms of gate-level metrics, under both signed and unsigned representations. Our algorithm not only computes the best design solution among those that have the same number of operations, but is also able to find better area solutions using a non-minimum number of operations. The results obtained by the proposed exact algorithm are compared with the results of the exact algorithm designed for the minimum number of operations on FIR filters and it is shown that the area of the design can be reduced by up to 18%.

Abstract: Classification problems are of profound interest for the machine learning community as well as to an array of application fields. However, multi-class classification problems can be very complex, in particular when the number of classes is high. Although very successful in so many applications, GP was never regarded as a good method to perform multi-class classification. In this work, we present a novel algorithm for tree based GP, that incorporates some ideas on the representation of the solution space in higher dimensions. This idea lays some foundations on addressing multi-class classification problems using GP, which may lead to further research in this direction. We test the new approach on a large set of benchmark problems from several different sources, and observe its competitiveness against the most successful state-of-the-art classifiers.

Abstract: This study investigated non-verbal behavior and socioemotional interactions in small-groups of humans and robots. Sixty-participants were involved in a group setting in which they were required to play a card game with another human and two robots (playing as partners or as opponents). The two robots displayed different goal orientations: a competitive robot (named Emys-) and a relationship-driven cooperative robot (named Glin+). Video recordings of the interactions were analyzed in three game play sessions. Eye gaze and socioemotional support behaviors were coded based on Bales’ Interaction Process Analysis. Results indicated that gaze behavior towards partners was more frequently displayed to the relationship-driven robot than to the competitive robot and the human partners. In contrast, gaze towards opponents occurred more often towards the competitive robot than to the relationship-driven robot and the human opponents. Socioemotional support occurred more frequently towards partners than opponents, and was also displayed more often towards humans than towards robots. Moreover, in the sessions where the robots were opponents, participants provided more support to the competitive robot. This investigation in small groups of humans and robots provided evidence of different interaction patterns towards robots displaying distinct orientation goals, which can be useful in guiding the successful design of social robots.
