Abstract: The novel Bi-containing reactive ionic liquid [C4mim]3[Bi3I12], which was synthesized in quantitative yield by equimolar reaction of BiI3 and [C4mim]I, was used as a novel Bi-source for the ionothermal synthesis of Bi2Te3 nanoparticles by reaction with (Et3Si)2Te in the ionic liquid [C4mim]I. The solid state structure of [C4mim]3[Bi3I12] was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In addition, the ionothermal synthesis of the single source precursor (Et2Sb)2Te and [C4mim]3[Bi3I12] yielded the ternary (BixSb1−x)2Te3 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) nanoparticles. The chemical composition and phase purity of the tetradymite-type materials were determined by EDX and XRD and the surface composition of the nanoparticles was further investigated by IR and XPS. In addition, the morphology of the nanoparticles was investigated by SEM and TEM.

Abstract: Previous epidemiologic studies investigating central venous catheter (CVC)-related venous thromboembolism (CRT) were conducted in heterogenous cancer populations and data in breast cancer (BC) remain limited. To investigate the Doppler ultrasound (DUS)-CRT incidence, risk factors and outcomes in BC, we designed a prospective, multicenter cohort of nonmetastatic invasive BC patients undergoing insertion of a CVC for chemotherapy. All patients underwent double-blind DUS before, 7, 30, and 90 days after CVC insertion and a 6 months clinical follow-up. Symptomatic DUS-CRT were treated by anticoagulants. D-Dimers, thrombin generation, and platelet-derived microparticles were measured before and 2 days after CVC placement. In DUS-CRT patients, a nested case–control study analyzed the role of thrombophilia. Among 524 patients, the DUS-CRT (14 symptomatic, 46 asymptomatic) cumulative probability was 9.6% at 3 months and 11.5% at 6 months (overall incidence rate: 2.18/100 patient-months). Ten/14 symptomatic DUS-CRT were detected on double-blind DUS before the clinical symptoms, and 3/14 had a simultaneous pulmonary embolism. No clinical thrombotic event subsequently occurred in untreated asymptomatic DUS-CRT. Age >50 years (OR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.01–3.22), BMI >30 kg/m² (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.46–4.76) and comorbidities (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.18–3.56) were associated with DUS-CRT. No biomarkers was found to predict DUS-CRT. In multivariate analysis, BMI >30 kg/m² (OR, 2.66; 95%CI, 1.46–4.84) and lobular carcinoma histology (OR, 2.56; 95%CI, 1.32–4.96) remained the only significant DUS-CRT risk factors. Thrombophilia did not account for DUS-CRT. Only clinical parameters identified high risk DUS-CRT patients who may be considered for thromboprophylaxis.

Abstract: Background
Visceral adipose tissue foam cells are increased in human obesity, and were implicated in adipose dysfunction and increased cardio-metabolic risk. In the circulation, non-classical monocytes (NCM) are elevated in obesity and associate with atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes. We hypothesized that circulating NCM correlate and/or are functionally linked to visceral adipose tissue foam cells in obesity, potentially providing an approach to estimate visceral adipose tissue status in the non-surgical obese patient.
Methods
We preformed ex-vivo functional studies utilizing sorted monocyte subclasses from healthy donors. Moreover, we assessed circulating blood monocyte subclasses and visceral fat adipose tissue macrophage (ATM) lipid content by flow-cytometry in paired blood and omental-fat samples collected from patients (n = 65) undergoing elective abdominal surgery.
Results
Ex-vivo, NCM and NCM-derived macrophages exhibited lower lipid accumulation capacity compared to classical or intermediate monocytes/-derived macrophages. Moreover, of the three subclasses, NCM exhibited the lowest migration towards adipose tissue conditioned-media. In a cohort of n = 65, increased %NCM associated with higher BMI (r = 0.250,p<0.05) and ATM lipid content (r = 0.303,p<0.05). Among patients with BMI≥25Kg/m2, linear regression models adjusted for age, sex or BMI revealed that NCM independently associate with ATM lipid content, particularly in men.
Conclusions
Collectively, although circulating blood NCM are unlikely direct functional precursor cells for adipose tissue foam cells, their increased percentage in the circulation may clinically reflect higher lipid content in visceral ATMs.
