Abstract: The diversity of life on Earth raises the question of whether it is possible to have a single theoretical description of the quantitative aspects of the organization of metabolism for all organisms. However, similarities between organisms, such as von Bertalanffy's growth curve and Kleiber's law on metabolic rate, suggest that mechanisms that control the uptake and use of metabolites are common to all organisms. These and other widespread empirical patterns in biology should be the ultimate test for any metabolic theory that hopes for generality. The present study (i) collects empirical evidence on growth, stoichiometry, feeding, respiration and energy dissipation and exhibits it as stylized biological facts; (ii) formalizes assumptions and propositions in a metabolic theory that is fully consistent with the Dynamic Energy Budget theory; and (iii) proves that these assumptions and propositions are consistent with the stylized facts.

Abstract: Recently Guillemin gave an explicit combinatorial way of constructing "toric" Kahler metrics on (symplectic) toric varieties, using only data on the moment polytope. In this paper, differential geometric properties of these metrics are investigated using Guillemin's construction. In particular, a nice combinatorial formula for the scalar curvature is given, and the Euler-Lagrange condition for such "toric" metrics being extremal (in the sense of Calabi) is derived. A construction, due to Calabi, of a 1-parameter family of extremal metrics of non-constant scalar curvature is recast very simply and explicitly. Finally, a curious combinatorial formula for convex polytopes, that follows from the relation between the total integral of the scalar curvature and the wedge product of the first Chern class with a suitable power of the Kahler class, is presented.

Abstract: This paper describes the design of a robot head, developed in the framework of the RobotCub project. This project goals consists on the design and construction of a humanoid robotic platform, the iCub, for studying human cognition. The final platform would be approximately 90 cm tall, with 23 kg and with a total number of 53 degrees of freedom. For its size, the iCub is the most complete humanoid robot currently being designed, in terms of kinematic complexity. The eyes can also move, as opposed to similarly sized humanoid platforms. Specifications are made based on biological anatomical and behavioral data, as well as tasks constraints. Different concepts for the neck design (flexible, parallel and serial solutions) are analyzed and compared with respect to the specifications. The eye structure and the proprioceptive sensors are presented, together with some discussion of preliminary work on the face design

Abstract: The winemaking process generates a large amount of residues such as vine shots, stalks, grape pomace, and wine lees, which were only recently considered for exploitation of their valuable compounds. The purpose of this work was to investigate the performance of nanofiltration for the recovery of phenolic compounds, with bioactive capacity like antioxidant, from red grape pomace extract. Four membranes were compared in this study—three cellulose acetate (CA series: lab-prepared by phase inversion) and one commercial (NF90). All membranes were characterized for their hydraulic permeability and rejection coefficients to reference solutes like saccharose, glucose, raffinose, polyethylene glycol, sodium chloride, and sodium sulfate. Permeation flowrates and rejection coefficients towards total phenolics content, antioxidant activity, proanthocyanidins, glucose and fructose were measured in the nanofiltration of grape pomace extract using selected operating conditions. Among the investigated membranes, the CA400-22 exhibited the highest permeate flux (50.58 L/m2 h at 20 bar and 25 °C), low fouling index (of about 23%), the lowest rejection coefficients towards the reference solutes and the best performance in terms of separation between sugars and phenolic compounds. Indeed, the observed rejections for glucose and fructose were 19% and 12%, respectively. On the other hand, total phenolics content and proanthocyanidins were rejected for 73% and 92%, respectively.

Abstract: Superradiant instabilities of spinning black holes (BHs) can be used to impose strong constraints on ultralight bosons, thus turning BHs into effective particle detectors. However, very little is known about the development of the instability and whether its nonlinear time evolution accords to the linear intuition. For the first time, we attack this problem by studying the impact of gravitational-wave (GW) emission and gas accretion on the evolution of the instability. Our quasi-adiabatic, fully-relativistic analysis shows that: (i) GW emission does not have a significant effect on the evolution of the BH, (ii) accretion plays an important role, and (iii) although the mass of the scalar cloud developed through superradiance can be a sizeable fraction of the BH mass, its energy-density is very low and backreaction is negligible. Thus, massive BHs are well described by the Kerr geometry even if they develop bosonic clouds through superradiance. Using Monte Carlo methods and very conservative assumptions, we provide strong support to the validity of the linearized analysis and to the bounds of previous studies.
