TL;DR: The temperature dependence of the pre-edge features in x-ray absorption spectroscopy is reviewed and the fact that these two peaks also correspond to electric quadrupole transitions is explained by a recently proposed theory.
Abstract: The temperature dependence of the pre-edge features in x-ray absorption spectroscopy is reviewed. Then, the temperature dependence of the pre-edge structure at the K-edge of titanium in rutile TiO2 is measured at low and room temperature. The first two peaks grow with temperature. The fact that these two peaks also correspond to electric quadrupole transitions is explained by a recently proposed theory.

TL;DR: An extensively modified combustion/iodometric titration method was used for the determination of sulfur in SY-2, a CANMET international rock reference material, in coarse-grained mantle rocks and glassy materials at the microgram level.
Abstract: An extensively modified combustion/iodometric titration method was used for the determination of sulfur in SY-2, a CANMET international rock reference material, in coarse-grained mantle rocks and glassy materials at the microgram level. Replicate analysis (n = 27) of SY-2 demonstrated the potential for this sample to be certified as a reference sample for S. Our mean sulfur concentration (122 ± 3 μg g-1) suggests that the recommended value (0.011% w/w) could underestimate the true value by 10%. The other results compare well with those generated by other more sophisticated techniques such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and electron probe microanalysis, whether S is dissolved in glassy materials or occurs as discrete sulfides.

TL;DR: In this article, a new approach for tracking mineralogical alterations during laboratory stepwise heating experiments is proposed, which uses the hysteresis loop obtained as a difference between the loops measured after thermal treatment at two different consecutive temperatures.
Abstract: SUMMARY A new approach for tracking mineralogical alterations during laboratory stepwise heating experiments is proposed. It uses the hysteresis loop obtained as a difference between the loops measured after thermal treatment at two different consecutive temperatures. Depending on the nature of the mineralogical alterations (the formation of a new ferrimagnetic phase from a paramagnetic one, the thermal transformation of the originally present ferrimagnetic phases, grain size variation) and on their relative intensities, it is possible to distinguish between different cases. The examples shown reveal the significant alteration of magnetic carriers at low temperatures (up to 200°C) which usually is not identified by thermomagnetic analysis of magnetic susceptibility. The low temperature alteration of the remanence carriers has important consequences for the reliability and suitability criteria of palaeointensity determinations.
