TL;DR: A detailed study of 19 independent lava flows belonging to the Eastern Alkaline Province (EAP) in Mexico is presented in this article, where the mean paleodirection, discarding two intermediate polarity sites, is D=359.7 with SU=16.5 and SL=10.3 (upper and lower limits, respectively).
Abstract: We report a detailed paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic study of 19 independent lava flows belonging to the Eastern Alkaline Province (EAP) in Mexico. In total, 162 oriented samples were collected in four areas (Sierra de Tantima-Alamo, Tlanchinol, Chiconquiaco-Palma Sola and Poza Rica). All sites analyzed in this study were previously dated by means of the unspiked K-Ar geochronological method (Ferrari et al., J. Volcanol. Geotherm. Res., 146, 284–306, 2005) and span from 14.6 to 1.5 Ma. Rock-magnetic experiments point to simple magnetic mineralogy. In most cases, the remanence is carried by Ti-poor titanomagnetite of pseudosingle-domain grain size. In a few cases, Ti-rich titanomagnetites are responsible for the magnetization. The characteristic paleodirections are successfully isolated for all of the studied units. The mean paleodirection, discarding two intermediate polarity sites, is D=359.5°, I=32.9°, n=17, k=30, α95=6.7°. This direction is practically undistinguishable from the expected Mio-Pliocene paleodirections, as derived from reference poles for the North American polar wander curve, and is in agreement with the previously reported directions from the western Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This suggests that no major tectonic rotation occurred in studied area since the middle Miocene to Present. The paleosecular variation is estimated through the study of the scatter of virtual geomagnetic poles, giving SF=12.7 with SU=16.5 and SL=10.3 (upper and lower limits, respectively). These values are consistent with those predicted by the latitude-dependent variation model of McFadden et al. (Geophys. Res., 93, 11583–11588, 1991) for the last 5 Myr. Eleven sites yielded reverse magnetic polarity, six are normally magnetized and two lava flows provided apparently intermediate paleodirections. An interesting feature of the paleomagnetic record obtained from EAP volcanics is that two independent lava flows, dated as 2.04±0.04 and 1.97±0.04 Ma, respectively, both yield normal paleodirections during the reverse Matuyama period. These sites were apparently formed during the Reunion geomagnetic event worldwide observed.

19 Dec 2012TL;DR: In this article, a high power pump ultra bright low-noise source is configured with a multimode ("MM") seed source outputting a MM smooth, lownoise signal light at a wavelength λρ in a wavelength range between about 900 and 940 nm.
Abstract: A high power pump ultra bright low-noise source is configured with a multimode ("MM") seed source outputting a MM smooth, low-noise signal light at a wavelength λρ in a wavelength range between about 900 and 940 nm, a MM Yb fiber wavelength converter operative to convert emission of a plurality of high power ("HP"') semiconductor laser diodes at a wavelength λρ to a pump output at the desired waveiength λρ. The Yb-doped MM wavelength converter is configured with noise levels substantially identical to and lower than those of the low-noise signal light, brightness ("B") substantially equal to nxB, wherein n is a number HP semiconductor laser diodes, and B is brightness of each TIP laser diode, and output power ("Po") subsiantially equal to nPd, wherein Pd is a power of each HP laser diode, and n is the number thereof.

TL;DR: Mylonitic gabbro and altered gabro were recovered from off-axis high and corner high locations at ridge-transform intersection, adjacent to Vityaz transform fault of the slow spreading (32-35 mm/yr, full spreading) Northern Central Indian Ridge as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Mylonitic gabbro and altered gabbro were recovered from off-axis high and corner high locations at ridge-transform intersection, adjacent to Vityaz transform fault of the slow spreading (32–35 mm/yr, full spreading) Northern Central Indian Ridge. Both the varieties show signatures of extensive alteration caused due to interaction with sea water. Mylonitic gabbro represents high temperature metamorphism (∼700–800°C) and comprised of hornblende mineral which exhibits well defined foliation/gneissic appearance along with dynamically recrystallised plagioclase grains frequently intercalated with magnetite-ilmenite. Altered gabbro from corner high generally includes low temperature greenschist grade (∼300°C) mineralogical assemblages: chlorite, albite, quartz and locally magnesio hornblende. Crystal plastic deformation resulted in mylonite formation and often porphyroclasts of plagioclase and clinopyroxene grains, while altered gabbro locally exhibits cataclastic texture. Presence of Vityaz transform fault and adjacent megamullion at the weakly magmatic ridge-transform intersection and off-axis high locations prompted the present scenario very much conducive for hydrothermal circulation and further facilitate the exhumation of present suite of gabbro.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the laser welding of high-thickness pieces using a 30-kW laser and a 200-μm diameter fiber optic fiber, achieving a weld penetration depth of over 30mm in a single pass, and very high process speeds for thinner materials.
Abstract: The industrial applications of high-power fibre optic lasers include welding, 2D and 3D cutting, remote cutting and welding, brazing and surface treatments. The availability of fibre optic lasers with power outputs in excess of 10 kW might allow the development of novel fields of application in the welding of high thickness pieces: shipbuilding and offshore industries, pipe and cable manufacture and other heavy industry sectors. Carrying the beam by fibre optics allows high flexibility, even for the production of very large pieces, such as in the shipbuilding sector. This study describes the laser welding of high thickness pieces using a 30 kW laser and a 200 μm diameter fibre. On the one hand, such lasers allow a weld penetration depth of over 30 mm in a single pass, and very high process speeds for thinner materials on the other. Combining lasers with conventional arc welding techniques (hybrid welding) allows further optimization of weld quality and makes it possible to weld butt joints with a ‘gap’ of...
