TL;DR: The theory of graphs has found many applications in structural engineering as discussed by the authors, including the study of the rigidity of structures, flexibility analysis, dynamic analysis, optimization, finite elements, graphics, sparse matrix technology and ordering are among those which have benefited more than other subjects.

TL;DR: In this article, the relative stiffnesses of skeletal structures are incorporated in the process of selecting self-equilibrating stress systems, and the stiffness of members are then assigned to the edges of the graph model of a structure, obtaining a network.
Abstract: In order to improve the conditioning of flexibility matrices for skeletal structures, the relative stiffnesses of their members are incorporated in the process of selecting self-equilibrating stress systems. The stiffnesses of members are then assigned to the edges of the graph model of a structure, obtaining a network. Methods are developed for generating cycle bases of networks, leading to well-conditioned flexibility matrices. Computational results are included to illustrate the performance of the presented methods.
