TL;DR: This work provides a general and up-to-date overview of HAT-based, mixed-mode (ET/HAT), and lipid peroxidation assays available for measuring antioxidant activity/capacity and the chemistry behind them, including a critical evaluation of their advantages and drawbacks.
Abstract: Measuring the antioxidant activity/capacity levels of food extracts and biological fluids is useful for determining the nutritional value of foodstuffs and for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of numerous oxidative stress-related diseases. Biologically, antioxidants play their health-beneficial roles via transferring a hydrogen (H) atom or an electron (e(-)) to reactive species, thereby deactivating them. Antioxidant activity assays imitate this action; that is, antioxidants are measured by their H atom transfer (HAT) or e(-) transfer (ET) to probe molecules. Antioxidant activity/capacity can be monitored by a wide variety of assays with different mechanisms, including HAT, ET, and mixed-mode (ET/HAT) assays, generally without distinct boundaries between them. Understanding the principal mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of the measurement assays is important for proper selection of method for valid evaluation of antioxidant properties in desired applications. This work provides a general and up-to-date overview of HAT-based, mixed-mode (ET/HAT), and lipid peroxidation assays available for measuring antioxidant activity/capacity and the chemistry behind them, including a critical evaluation of their advantages and drawbacks.

TL;DR: In this paper, the trends in the reference evapotranspiration (ETO) estimated through the Penman-Monteith method were investigated over the humid region of northeast (NE) India by using the Mann-Kendall (MK) test after removing the effect of significant lag-1 serial correlation from the time series of ETO by pre-whitening.
Abstract: In the present study, the trends in the reference evapotranspiration (ETO) estimated through the Penman-Monteith method were investigated over the humid region of northeast (NE) India by using the Mann-Kendall (MK) test after removing the effect of significant lag-1 serial correlation from the time series of ETO by pre-whitening. During the last 22 years, ETO has been found to decrease significantly at annual and seasonal time scales for 6 sites in NE India and NE India as a whole. The seasonal decreases in ETO have, however, been more significant in the pre-monsoon season, indicating the presence of an element of a seasonal cycle. The decreases in ETO are mainly attributed to the net radiation and wind speed, which are also corroborated by the observed trends in these two parameters at almost all the times scales over most of the sites in NE India. The steady decrease in wind speed and decline in net radiation not only balanced the impact of the temperature increases on ETO, but may have actually caused the decreases in ETO over the humid region of northeast India. TL;DR: In this study k -fold partitioning, a statistical method, was employed in the ANN training stage and the Levenberg–Marquardt technique was found advantageous thanks to its shorter training duration and more satisfactory performance criteria.
Abstract: Flow forecasting performance by artificial neural networks (ANNs) is generally considered to be dependent on the data length. In this study k -fold partitioning, a statistical method, was employed in the ANN training stage. The method was found useful in the case of using the conventional feed-forward back propagation algorithm. It was shown that with a data period much shorter than the whole training duration similar flow prediction performance could be obtained. Prediction performance and convergence velocity comparison between three different back propagation algorithms, Levenberg–Marquardt, conjugate gradient and gradient descent was the next concern of the study and the Levenberg–Marquardt technique was found advantageous thanks to its shorter training duration and more satisfactory performance criteria.

TL;DR: A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) decaying to tau-lepton pairs in pp collisions is performed, using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC.
Abstract: A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) decaying to tau-lepton pairs in pp collisions is performed, using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 fb^(−1), with 4.9 fb^(−1) at 7 TeV and 19.7 fb^(−1) at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-lepton-pair invariant mass spectrum. Exclusion limits are presented in the MSSM parameter space for different benchmark scenarios, m_h^(max), m_h^(mod)_ +, m_h^(mod)_ -, light-stop, light-stau, τ-phobic, and low-m_H. Upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for gluon fusion and b-quark associated Higgs boson production are also given.
