TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the worldwide distribution of the annual variation of the geomagnetic field and found that over most of the world the variation is small, with a clear dependence on latitude, but near the poles it is larger and more erratic.
Abstract: Summary. Horizontal and vertical intensity data, obtained between 1957.0 and 1961.0 at 69 observatories, are analysed to determine the worldwide distribution of the annual variation of the geomagnetic field. Only data observed near local midnight are used, to avoid the small, but significant contamination from Sq. Over most of the world the variation is found to be small, with a clear dependence on latitude, but near the poles it is larger and more erratic. The non-polar variation is subjected to spherical harmonic analysis and separated into parts of internal and external origin. The polar variations are shown to be consistent with a north—south oscillation of the mean position of the auroral electrojets during the year. It is suggested that, with the exception of the polar effect, the annual variation is not due to ionospheric currents (as was hitherto believed), but results from an annual variation in the latitude of the ring current.

TL;DR: The data on the epidemiologic situation of sarcoidosis from 24 countries of Europe have been reviewed and the new facts seem to demonstrate that the differences between the frequency of this disease in the north and south are not real.
Abstract: The data on the epidemiologic situation of sarcoidosis from 24 countries of Europe have been reviewed. The new facts seem to demonstrate that the differences between the frequency of this disease in the north and south are not real. The actual situation is dependent on the general knowledge of this disease and on the extent and intensity of the active detection of its asymptomatic stage. A new prospective cooperative study of the yearly incidence of all forms of sarcoidosis in the total population of at least some European countries would be desirable.

TL;DR: The condensation products of 4 sympathomimetic amines with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid have been prepared and examined and the same products were investigated fluorimetrically after reduction with sodium borohydride.
Abstract: The condensation products of 4 sympathomimetic amines with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid have been prepared and examined. A spectrophotometric procedure based on the chloroform-soluble orange-red condensation product is described. The same products were investigated fluorimetrically after reduction with sodium borohydride. The results obtained are satisfactory.

TL;DR: The periodontal condition of 300 Turkish troops was investigated using the modified Ramfjord Periodontal Disease Index and little correlation was found between the relatively low DMFT rate and the Plaque Index.
Abstract: The periodontal condition of 300 Turkish troops was investigated using the modified Ramfjord Periodontal Disease Index. In addition, the gingival condition, presence and quantity of plaque and calculus, location and depth of periodontal pockets, tooth mobility, presence and severity of wear facets, diastema magnitude and the DMFT Index were determined. The average PDI was 3.8. Nearly 98% of the recruits suffered from gingivitis, 68% of whom exhibited moderate to severe inflammation without involvement of deeper structures. Moderate plaque accumulation and heavy calculus deposits were observed. An average DMFT of 5.09 was found. Little correlation was found between the relatively low DMFT rate and the Plaque Index.

TL;DR: The observation of a more severe degenerative picture of the nerves in the female patients may seem to be an interesting finding, but to the lack of an adequate number of cases which would enable a statistical evaluation, it is strongly, of the opinion that this subject deserves further study.
Abstract: Our ultrastructural findings in investigated cases of Bell's palsy have demonstrated that the degenerative changes did not proceed at the same speed from the onset of the paralysis—in other words the regeneration changed in accordance with the topography of the nerve. Although the endoneural sheath preserved its integrity, swellings in the Schwann cells have attracted much attention. Furthermore the perineural tissue presented changes which were closely correlated with the degenerative and regenerative processes due to paralysis. In addition to these findings, although the interval between the onset of paralysis and the operation was the same in all our cases, the observation of a more severe degenerative picture of the nerves in the female patients may seem to be an interesting finding, but to the lack of an adequate number of cases which would enable a statistical evaluation, we are strongly of the opinion that this subject deserves further study.

TL;DR: In this article, a fundamental relation that the solutions for the state variables of an uncontrollable system must satisfy is obtained, and it is shown that the rank of the controllability matrix and an algebraic transformation which gives the controLLability canonical form can easily be deduced.
Abstract: A fundamental relation that the solutions for the state variables of an uncontrollable system must satisfy is obtained. From this relation it is shown that the rank of the controllability matrix and an algebraic transformation which gives the controllability canonical form can easily be deduced. Under this transformation a set of controllable state variables remains invariant.

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of small motions superimposed on large static deformations and governing equations for prestressed beams on the basis of 3D theory of elastodynamics are presented.
Abstract: Variational theorems are presented for a theory of small motions superimposed on large static deformations and governing equations for prestressed beams on the basis of 3-D theory of elastodynamics. First, the principle of virtual work is modified through Friedrichs's transformation so as to describe the initial stress problem of elastodynamics. Next, the modified principle together with a chosen displacement field is used to derive a set of 1-D macroscopic governing equations of prestressed beams. The resulting equations describe all the types of superimposed motions in elastic beams, and they include all the effects of transverse shear and normal strains, and the rotatory inertia. The instability of the governing equations is discussed briefly.

TL;DR: In this article, a new Howitt transformation is defined which is applied to the hybrid description of a newly defined augmented network obtained by extracting appropriate terminals from an n-port passive reciprocal network.
Abstract: A new Howitt transformation is defined which is applied to the hybrid description of a newly defined augmented network obtained by extracting appropriate terminals from an n-port passive reciprocal network. A relationship between the Howitt matrix and the matrix T, which relates the state realizations of equivalent n-port networks, is found. For a restricted form of the matrix T, it is shown that a sufficient condition for the existence of such a relationship is that the equivalent n-ports be reciprocal. It is also shown that this relationship always exists for equivalent n-port RC or RL networks regardless of any restriction on the matrix T.

TL;DR: It is concluded that factors responsible for concentrations of immunoglobulins and alpha-1-antitrypsin are independent of each other in patients with lepromatous leprosy.
Abstract: IgG, IgA, and IgM immunoglobulins and alpha-1-antitrypsin globulin in sera from 30 patients with lepromatous leprosy were determined and compared with 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Mean levels of IgG, IgM, IgA, and alpha-1-antitrypsin were significantly elevated in the sera of lepromatous leprosy patients in comparison with levels found in normal subjects. Statistical analysis of the relationships between levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin and immunoglobulins in the sera of lepromatous leprosy patients and controls revealed no correlation. It is therefore concluded that factors responsible for concentrations of immunoglobulins and alpha-1-antitrypsin are independent of each other in patients with lepromatous leprosy.

Abstract: p-Chloromercuribenzoate inhibited the poly (U)-dependent binding of Phe-tRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit but displayed no inhibitory effect on the binding of poly (U) to the ribosome. Other sulfhydryl reagents tested, likeN-ethylmaleimide and iodoacetamide, did not affect the binding of Phe-tRNA to the small ribosomal subunit.
