TL;DR: In this paper, the number and orientation of faults in the Entrada and Navajo Sandstones in southeastern Utah have been investigated and shown to have a rhombohedral pattern both in map and cross-sectional views.
Abstract: Arrays of faults that can be grouped into multiple sets occur in the Entrada and Navajo Sandstones in southeastern Utah. The faults form a network that usually has a rhombohedral pattern both in map and cross-sectional views. Similar fault patterns were formed experimentally in cubic samples of sandstone, limestone, and granite deformed to failure with a polyaxial apparatus. The faulting theory of Anderson fails to explain both the number and the orientation of the faults observed in this study. However, the number and orientation of faults can be understood in terms of a theory of deformation of rock solely by slip along planes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC; EC 4.1.19) and ornithine decarsylase and polyamine content were examined in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. during anthesis, during fruit development and throughout vegetative growth.
Abstract: The activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC; EC 4.1.1.19) and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC; EC 4.1.1.17) as well as polyamine content were examined in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Taylor's Horticultural before and during anthesis, during fruit development and throughout vegetative growth. The specific activities of polyamine biosynthetic enzymes were highest in all rapidly growing tissues, e.g., root apices, hypocotyls, young internodes, young leaves, flower buds, young pods and pericarps. They were lowest in mature, non-growing tissues. Similarly, the content of the major polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) is highest in rapidly growing tissues, and lowest in mature tissue. These correlations reinforce the growing connection between polyamines and rates of cell division and metabolic activity during both vegetative and reproductive development.

TL;DR: In the early 1880s, the growth of anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria as well as the avalanche of pogroms in Russia and East Europe convinced a considerable section of the Jewish intelligentsia that assimilation was no longer a desirable nor a possible solution to the Jewish Question as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: By the 1880s, the growth of anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria as well as the avalanche of pogroms in Russia and East Europe convinced a considerable section of the Jewish intelligentsia that assimilation was no longer a desirable nor a possible solution to the “Jewish Question.” They came to realize that Jews were not only a religious group, but also a separate nation, bound by a common faith and sentiment rather than by land. According to these Jewish nationalists, the Jewish Question could only be solved if the Jews stood on a par with other nations, which could be attained by the collective return of Jews to the ranks of the nations as a people living in their homeland. This was why Dr. Theodor Herzl, as the founder of political Zionism, insisted that the Jews should be “granted sovereignty over a portion of the globe large enough to satisfy the rightful requirements of a nation.”

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give explicit expressions for certain coefficients related to diffraction occuring at the edges of cylindrically curved reflectors, which can also be used to calculate diffracted fields even when the reflector is not cylindrical.
Abstract: To analyse the diffraction of high frequency waves one recourses often to the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction whose aim is to describe this phenomenon in terms of rays and certain factors. These latters involve several diffraction coefficients showing the modifications which occur when a ray is transformed into another one at a diffraction point. The aim of this paper is to give explicit expressions for certain coefficients related to diffractions occuring at the edges of cylindrically curved reflectors. On account of the locality of high-frequency diffraction phenomenon, all the coefficients given here can also be used, with some precautions, to calculate diffracted fields even when the reflector is not cylindrical.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the first order brightener saccharine, the second-order brightener succinonitrile and of the second order brighteners and leveller pyridine on the initial stages of the electro deposition of nickel have been examined.
Abstract: SummaryThe effects of the first order brightener saccharine, the second order brightener succinonitrile and of the second order brightener and leveller pyridine on the kinetics of the initial stages of the electro deposition of nickel have been examined. It has been shown that the dominant effects are on the nucleation of three-dimensional growth centres while the rates of crystal growth are insensitive to the nature and concentration of the additives.

TL;DR: In this paper, different types of karstic regions in Turkey are presented: Taurus region, South East Anatolia, Central Anatolia or Konya basin, Northwest Anatolia and Thrace.
Abstract: The paper first emphasizes that in order to provide satisfactory answers to the complex engineering geological problems in karst environments, the basic geology of large areas must be studied on a regional scale. Then the different types of karstic regions in Turkey are presented: Taurus region, South East Anatolia, Central Anatolia or Konya basin, Northwest Anatolia and Thrace. The regional geological structures reflect on the karst systems. When the detailed data concerning the different regions will be compiled in the near future, engineering geological properties of the carbonate rocks of the different karsts will be better understood. In addition, investigations of parameters which affect the development of karst systems will supply more economical and more confident solutions to the engineering geological problems of construction on soluble rocks.

TL;DR: The absence or scarcity of transfusion requirement and comparatively low hemoglobin F content were the most important findings in four homozygotes for beta-thalassemia with normal hemoglobins A2 and F.
Abstract: Four homozygotes for beta-thalassemia with normal hemoglobins A2 and F were studied. The absence or scarcity of transfusion requirement and comparatively low hemoglobin F content were the most important findings. Both parents of 3 patients showed the findings of beta-thalassemia with normal hemoglobins A2 and F. Biosynthetic studies in 2 patients and their both parents showed moderate or mild beta-chain deficiency. The possible reason for this comparatively mild course of a beta-thalassemia syndrome lies in a mild deficit in beta-chain production.

Abstract: Der CAE-Abbau von cis-5,8,13,13a-Tetrahydro-2,3,10,11-tetramethoxy-13-methyl-6H-dibenzo[a,g]chinolizin (5) fuhrt in Gegenwart von I⊝ zu dem Dibenz[c,g]azecin 19 und nicht zu einer Vorstufe der 6′-Hydroxymethyl-9-methyllaudanosine 3, die aus 9-Methylpapaverin durch Hydroxymethylierung, Quaternisierung und Boranat-Reduktion erhalten wurden. Synthesis of 6′-(Hydroxymethyl)-9-methyllaudanosine and its Degradation with Ethyl Chloroformate. Degradation of cis-5,8,13,13a-tetrahydro-2,3,10,11-tetramethoxy-13-methyl-6H-dibenzo[a,g]quinolizine (5) with ethyl chloroformate and I⊝ leads to the dibenz[c,g]azecine 19 but not to a precursor of the 6′-(hydroxymethyl)-9-methyllaudanosines 3. These molecules are synthesized from 9-methylpapaverine by hydroxymethylation, quaternization and reduction with NaBH4. On account of steric reasons, the reaction with ethyl chloroformate does not lead to the 3-phenyl-4-methylisochroman 4, but to the ethoxycarbonates 26. Because of steric hindrance the alkaloid macrantaline (27) does not give rise to a 3-phenylisochroman. Rather the degradation with ethyl chloroformate evades to produce stilbene 28. Both reactions are in accord with a mechanism that includes an inversion at C-1 in the course of the conversion of 1-benzyltetrahydroisoquinolines to 3-phenylisochromans.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated 14 O-type stars with IUE high resolution SWP spectra in order to improve the relations of element depletions with E(B-V), and to look for other possible relations with two stellar parameters: namely, the rate of mass loss and rotational velocity.
Abstract: We have investigated 14 O-type stars with IUE high resolution SWP spectra in order to improve the relations of element depletions withE(B-V), and to look for other possible relations with two stellar parameters: namely, the rate of mass loss and rotational velocity. The stars were chosen so as to cover several directions in the Galaxy, as well as a wide range in interstellar reddening. Although our data are only crude and were obtained by making several approximations, they show the derived dependence of a parameter, which we call a depletion index, on reddening. We found a clear inverse trend relating the abundance of elements to interstellar reddening, and a crude relation between the increasing depletion and condensation temperature.

TL;DR: Results showed that ornidazole (Ro-7-0207) has a sensitizing effect on hypoxic cells in vivo and it is worthwhile to try this drug in a clinical study.
Abstract: In this study the sensitizing effect of ornidazole is investigated in vivo. The selected test system is the acute killing effect of radiation within 4-6 days after abdominal irradiation ranging from 9 to 24 Gy, in groups of C57 black mice. Ornidazole is given intraperitoneally in 500 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg doses prior to irradiation of animals breathing air, oxygen or nitrogen. A decrease of LD50 dose is observed from 24.39 +/- 5.66 to 16.38 +/- 1.86 and 18.04 +/- 2.48 Gy, respectively, in nitrogen breathing animals. No sensitizing effect was observed in doses of 20 mg/kg. Enhancement Ratio (ER) was found to be 1.48 +/- 0.25 and 1.35 +/- 0.27; relative sensitizing efficiency (RSE) was 40% and 29% respectively. No sensitizing effect was observed in animals irradiated in oxic conditions. These results showed that ornidazole (Ro-7-0207) has a sensitizing effect on hypoxic cells in vivo. It is worthwhile to try this drug in a clinical study.

TL;DR: In this article, the distribution in time and space of earthquakes was investigated along the East Anatolian Fault between Karliova and Maras, with an interval of 75 years for largemagnitude earthquakes and with a period of 105 days for microearthquakes occurring in a limited area.
Abstract: In order to evaluate past and present earthquake activity along the East Anatolian Fault between Karliova and Maras, the distribution in time and space of earthquakes was investigated. The investigation dealt with an interval of 75 years for largemagnitude earthquakes, and with a period of 105 days for microearthquakes occurring in a limited area. The most active regions of the fault zone are around Bingol in the north, the Lake Hazar in the middle, and Adiyaman in the south. Along the fault zone the average Richter magnitude of earthquakes is about 5, the hypocentral depth about 25 kilometers, the period of occurrence (determined by spectral analysis) about 11 years, and the b-value for the magnitude range of 7>M>4 approximately 0.5.
