TL;DR: From this analysis, recently developed double hybrids, such as xDH-PBE0, emerge as the most reliable methods, while global hybrids confirm their robustness in reproducing molecular structures.
Abstract: In this Letter we report the error analysis of 59 exchange-correlation functionals in evaluating the structural parameters of small- and medium-sized organic molecules. From this analysis, recently developed double hybrids, such as xDH-PBE0, emerge as the most reliable methods, while global hybrids confirm their robustness in reproducing molecular structures. Notably the M06-L density functional is the only semilocal method reaching an accuracy comparable to hybrids’. A comparison with errors obtained on energetic databases (including thermochemistry, reaction barriers, and interaction energies) indicate that most of the functionals have a coherent behavior, showing low (or high) deviations on both energy and structure data sets. Only a few of them are more prone toward one of these two properties.

TL;DR: Results support the hypothesis that the antimicrobial effect of CORM‐3 is mediated by an interaction of CO liberated by the carrier with the bacterial respiratory chain and suggest that CORMs could form the basis for developing a new therapeutic strategy against P. aeruginosa bacteremia.
Abstract: The search for new molecules to fight Pseudomonas aeruginosa is of paramount importance. Carbon monoxide (CO) is known to act as an effective inhibitor of the respiratory chain in P. aeruginosa, but the practical use of this gas as an antibacterial molecule is hampered by its toxicity and difficulty to manipulate. Here, we show that a water-soluble CO releaser (CORM-3) possesses bactericidal properties against laboratory and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa. CORM-3 reduced the bacterial count by 4 logs 180 min after in vitro treatment. CORM-3-treated bacteria had a lower O(2) consumption than vehicle-treated bacteria, and the decrease in O(2) consumption temporally preceded the bactericidal action of CORM-3. These results support the hypothesis that the antimicrobial effect of CORM-3 is mediated by an interaction of CO liberated by the carrier with the bacterial respiratory chain. The antibacterial effect occurred at concentrations of CORM-3 that are 50-fold lower than toxic concentrations for eukaryotic cells. CORM-3 treatment compared to vehicle treatment decreased bacterial counts in the spleen and increased survival in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed mice following P. aeruginosa bacteremia. Our results suggest that CORMs could form the basis for developing a new therapeutic strategy against P. aeruginosa-induced infection.

TL;DR: An overview on the processing-structure-property relationships that enable the controlled and uniform alignment of polymer films over large areas with scalable processes is provided with a focus on specific molecular structures, such as planarized backbones with a reduced degree of conformational disorder, solution formulation with controlled aggregation, and deposition techniques inducing suitable directional flow.
Abstract: Polymer semiconductors have been experiencing a remarkable improvement in electronic and optoelectronic properties, which are largely related to the recent development of a vast library of high-performance, donor-acceptor copolymers showing alternation of chemical moieties with different electronic affinities along their backbones. Such steady improvement is making conjugated polymers even more appealing for large-area and flexible electronic applications, from distributed and portable electronics to healthcare devices, where cost-effective manufacturing, light weight, and ease of integration represent key benefits. Recently, a strong boost to charge carrier mobility in polymer-based field-effect transistors, consistently achieving the range from 1.0 to 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 for both holes and electrons, has been given by uniaxial backbone alignment of polymers in thin films, inducing strong transport anisotropy and favoring enhanced transport properties along the alignment direction. Herein, an overview on this topic is provided with a focus on the processing-structure-property relationships that enable the controlled and uniform alignment of polymer films over large areas with scalable processes. The key aspects are specific molecular structures, such as planarized backbones with a reduced degree of conformational disorder, solution formulation with controlled aggregation, and deposition techniques inducing suitable directional flow.

TL;DR: Rapid exciton diffusion is revealed in films of a fused-ring electron acceptor that, when blended with a donor, already outperforms fullerene-based OPV cells and may even obviate the need for the bulk heterojunction morphology.
Abstract: Modest exciton diffusion lengths dictate the need for nanostructured bulk heterojunctions in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells; however, this morphology compromises charge collection. Here, we reveal rapid exciton diffusion in films of a fused-ring electron acceptor that, when blended with a donor, already outperforms fullerene-based OPV cells. Temperature-dependent ultrafast exciton annihilation measurements are used to resolve a quasi-activationless exciton diffusion coefficient of at least 2 × 10–2 cm2/s, substantially exceeding typical organic semiconductors and consistent with the 20–50 nm domain sizes in optimized blends. Enhanced three-dimensional diffusion is shown to arise from molecular and packing factors; the rigid planar molecular structure is associated with low reorganization energy, good transition dipole moment alignment, high chromophore density, and low disorder, all enhancing long-range resonant energy transfer. Relieving exciton diffusion constraints has important implications for OPVs...
