TL;DR: A lucid synthesis of the developments on single-molecule localization precision and accuracy and their practical implications are presented in order to guide the increasing number of researchers using single-particle tracking and super-resolution localization microscopy.
Abstract: Methods based on single-molecule localization and photophysics have brought nanoscale imaging with visible light into reach. This has enabled single-particle tracking applications for studying the dynamics of molecules and nanoparticles and contributed to the recent revolution in super-resolution localization microscopy techniques. Crucial to the optimization of such methods are the precision and accuracy with which single fluorophores and nanoparticles can be localized. We present a lucid synthesis of the developments on this localization precision and accuracy and their practical implications in order to guide the increasing number of researchers using single-particle tracking and super-resolution localization microscopy.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates a scheme of all-optical transistor based on exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, which exhibits full connectivity in the same chip plane.
Abstract: Although optical technology provides the best solution for the transmission of information, all-optical devices must satisfy several qualitative criteria to be used as logic elements. In particular, cascadability is difficult to obtain in optical systems, and it is assured only if the output of one stage is in the correct form to drive the input of the next stage. Exciton-polaritons, which are composite particles resulting from the strong coupling between excitons and photons, have recently demonstrated huge non-linearities and unique propagation properties. Here we show that polariton fluids moving in the plane of the microcavity can operate as input and output of an all-optical transistor, obtaining up to 19 times amplification and demonstrating the cascadability of the system. Moreover, the operation as an AND/OR gate is shown, validating the connectivity of multiple transistors in the microcavity plane and opening the way to the implementation of polariton integrated circuits.

TL;DR: The ECM has a dual role as a promoter of structural and functional plasticity and as a degradable stabilizer of neural microcircuits, likely to be important for mental health.
Abstract: Recent studies have deepened our understanding of multiple mechanisms by which extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules regulate various aspects of synaptic plasticity and have strengthened a link between the ECM and learning and memory. New findings also support the view that the ECM is important for homeostatic processes, such as scaling of synaptic responses, metaplasticity and stabilization of synaptic connectivity. Activity-dependent modification of the ECM affects the formation of dendritic filopodia and the growth of dendritic spines. Thus, the ECM has a dual role as a promoter of structural and functional plasticity and as a degradable stabilizer of neural microcircuits. Both of these aspects are likely to be important for mental health.
