TL;DR: It is demonstrated that near-infrared BSWs sustained by a silicon-based multilayer can be locally coupled and guided through dielectric ridges of nanometric thickness with low propagation losses.
Abstract: We present a direct evidence of Bloch surface waves (BSWs) waveguiding on ultrathin polymeric ridges, supported by near-field measurements. It is demonstrated that near-infrared BSWs sustained by a silicon-based multilayer can be locally coupled and guided through dielectric ridges of nanometric thickness with low propagation losses. Using a conventional prism-based configuration, we demonstrate a wavelength-selective BSW coupling inside and outside the ridge. Such a result can open interesting opportunities in surface wave-mediated sensing applications, where light could be selectively coupled in specific regions defined by nanometric reliefs.

TL;DR: This paper presents an alternative approach that enables the surgeon to feel fingertip contact deformations and vibrations while guaranteeing the teleoperator's stability, and implemented this solution on an Intuitive Surgical da Vinci Standard robot.
Abstract: Despite its expected clinical benefits, current teleoperated surgical robots do not provide the surgeon with haptic feedback largely because grounded forces can destabilize the system's closed-loop controller. This paper presents an alternative approach that enables the surgeon to feel fingertip contact deformations and vibrations while guaranteeing the teleoperator's stability. We implemented our cutaneous feedback solution on an Intuitive Surgical da Vinci Standard robot by mounting a SynTouch BioTac tactile sensor to the distal end of a surgical instrument and a custom cutaneous display to the corresponding master controller. As the user probes the remote environment, the contact deformations, dc pressure, and ac pressure (vibrations) sensed by the BioTac are directly mapped to input commands for the cutaneous device's motors using a model-free algorithm based on look-up tables. The cutaneous display continually moves, tilts, and vibrates a flat plate at the operator's fingertip to optimally reproduce the tactile sensations experienced by the BioTac. We tested the proposed approach by having eighteen subjects use the augmented da Vinci robot to palpate a heart model with no haptic feedback, only deformation feedback, and deformation plus vibration feedback. Fingertip deformation feedback significantly improved palpation performance by reducing the task completion time, the pressure exerted on the heart model, and the subject's absolute error in detecting the orientation of the embedded plastic stick. Vibration feedback significantly improved palpation performance only for the seven subjects who dragged the BioTac across the model, rather than pressing straight into it.

TL;DR: It is found that the conformers cocrystallized with the largest ligands displayed high selectivity for binders, and when combined in ensembles they consistently provided better results than randomly chosen protein conformations.
Abstract: The use of multiple X-ray protein structures has been reported to be an efficient alternative for the representation of the binding pocket flexibility needed for accurate small molecules docking. However, the docking performance of the individual single conformations varies widely, and adding certain conformations to an ensemble is even counterproductive. Here we used a very large and diverse benchmark of 1068 X-ray protein conformations of 99 therapeutically relevant proteins, first, to compare the performance of the ensemble and single-conformation docking and, second, to find the properties of the best-performing conformers that can be used to select a smaller set of conformers for ensemble docking. The conformer selection has been validated through retrospective virtual screening experiments aimed at separating known ligand binders from decoys. We found that the conformers cocrystallized with the largest ligands displayed high selectivity for binders, and when combined in ensembles they consistently p...

TL;DR: The potential of biocompatible platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) as antioxidant nanozymes is shown, which combine abundant cellular internalization and efficient scavenging activity of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus simultaneously integrating the functions of nanocarriers and antioxidant drugs.
Abstract: In recent years, the use of nanomaterials as biomimetic enzymes has attracted great interest. In this work, we show the potential of biocompatible platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) as antioxidant nanozymes, which combine abundant cellular internalization and efficient scavenging activity of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus simultaneously integrating the functions of nanocarriers and antioxidant drugs. Careful toxicity assessment and intracellular tracking of Pt NPs proved their cytocompatibility and high cellular uptake, with compartmentalization within the endo/lysosomal vesicles. We have demonstrated that Pt NPs possess strong and broad antioxidant properties, acting as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase enzymes, with similar or even superior performance than natural enzymes, along with higher adaptability to the changes in environmental conditions. We then exploited their potent activity as radical scavenging materials in a cellular model of an oxidative stress-related disorder, namely human Cerebral Cavernous Malformation (CCM) disease, which is associated with a significant increase in intracellular ROS levels. Noteworthily, we found that Pt nanozymes can efficiently reduce ROS levels, completely restoring the cellular physiological homeostasis.
