TL;DR: In this paper, the results of the study of γ-FeOOH structure by means of neutron diffraction and the Mossbauer effect are discussed and the positions of the ions are determined.
Abstract: Results of the study of γ-FeOOH structure by means of neutron diffraction and Mossbauer effect are discussed. The positions of the ions are determined. The hydrogen ion occupies a central position between two oxygen ions separated from one another by 2.70 A. The Neel temperature determined from magnetic susceptibility is 50 °K. A model of antiferromagnetic ordering of the magnetic moments is suggested.

TL;DR: In this article, the classification of β-FeOOH as belonging to the tetragonal system was confirmed and a set of coordinates of iron, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in the unit cell was given.
Abstract: A synthetic polycrystalline sample of β-FeOOH was investigated by means of X-ray and thermal neutron diffraction. The classification of β-FeOOH as belonging to the tetragonal system was confirmed and a set of coordinates of iron, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in the unit cell is given. The spin ordering determined is of the layer kind: the magnetic moments in the particular layers are coupled ferromagnetically parallel to the co-axis and antiferromagnetically between the layers.

TL;DR: The effect of optimal and stress temperatures on the growth kinetics of the Phaeodactylum tricornutum CCAP/1055/1 strain (a model diatom with a known genome sequence) in batch cultures was examined and showed two phases of culture growth.
Abstract: The effect of optimal and stress temperatures on the growth kinetics of the Phaeodactylum tricornutum CCAP/1055/1 strain (a model diatom with a known genome sequence) in batch cultures was examined. The analysis of the obtained results showed two phases of culture growth. There were significant positive correlations between OD increase of chlorophyll a chlorophyll c and protein concentration at different temperatures. The Fv/Fm parameter achieved a maximum level on the 6(th) or 7(th) day and then decreased to the values registered on the first day of observation. Genetic material undergoes gradual degradation 10 days after inoculation. The size of the cells was invariable.

TL;DR: The maximum amount of arbutin obtained was higher than that required by the latest 9(th) Edition of the Polish Pharmacopoeia and by the newest 8th Edithion of European Pharmacopoesia for Uvae ursi folium, and is interesting from practical point of view.
Abstract: Arbutin (hydroquinone β-D-glucoside) is a compound of plant origin possessing valuable therapeutic (urinary tract disinfection) and cosmetic (skin whitening) properties, which can be obtained from in vitro cultures of plants belonging to different taxa via biotransformation of exogenously supplemented hydroquinone. Agitating cultures of Aronia melanocarpa were maintained on the Murashige and Skoog medium containing growth regulators: the cytokinin - BAP (6-benzylaminopurine), 2 mg/l and the auxin NAA (α-naphthaleneacetic acid), 2 mg/l. The biomass was cultured for 2 weeks and then hydroquinone was supplemented at the following doses: 96, 144, 192, 288 and 384 mg/l either undivided or divided into two or three portions added at 24-hour intervals. The content of the reaction product - arbutin, was determined using an HPLC method in methanolic extracts from biomass and lyophilized medium samples collected 24 hours after the addition of the last precursor dose. The total amounts of arbutin were very diverse, from 2.71 to 8.27 g/100g d.w. The production of arbutin rose with increasing hydroquinone concentration. The maximum content of the product was observed after hydroquinone addition at 384 mg/l divided into two portions. Biotransformation efficiency also varied widely, ranging from 37.04% do 73.80%. The identity of the product - arbutin, after its isolation and purification was confirmed by spectral analysis ((1)H-NMR spectrum). The maximum amount of arbutin obtained was higher than that required by the latest 9(th) Edition of the Polish Pharmacopoeia and by the newest 8th Edithion of European Pharmacopoeia for Uvae ursi folium (7.0 g/100g d.w.), and is interesting from practical point of view.

TL;DR: This method empowered qualitative and quantitative analysis of the selected individual prostaglandins derived from arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid from cell extracts by using a UHPLC/MS-TOF method.
Abstract: Metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids results in biosynthesis of mediators with different physiological effects. These metabolites include prostaglandins, prostacyclins, isoprostanes and others that are important signalling molecules and regulate a variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes including inflammation. Prostaglandins and isoprostanes are produced by either non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation or by enzyme-induced peroxidation (cyclooxygenases and lipoxygenases). They are used as biomarkers of oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) supplementation with added benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) on HepG2 cells by using a UHPLC/MS-TOF method. This rapid and simple method was developed for the identification, separation and quantification of 8-iPGF3α, PGF3α, 8-isoPGF2α and 5-iPF2α in cultured cells. The UHPLC/MS-TOF method was validated. The calculated limit of detection was in the range of 0.16-0.50 ng/mL, precision (% RSD): 1.2-2.1% and recoveries better than 88%. This method empowered qualitative and quantitative analysis of the selected individual prostaglandins derived from arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid from cell extracts.

TL;DR: In these studies, the expression of two de-epoxidase genes of another Phaeodactylum tricornutum strain, which is commonly used in diatom studies, were obtained in Origami b and BL21 E. coli strains.
Abstract: In the diadinoxanthin cycle the epoxy group is removed from diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin is created. This conversion takes place e.g. in diatoms with the involvement of the enzyme diadinoxanthin de-epoxidase. In one of the diatom species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (CCAP 1055/1 strain with genome sequenced) three de-epoxidase genes (PtVDE, PtVDL1, PtVDL2) have been identified, but only one of them (PtVDE) corresponds to violaxanthin de-epoxidase, an enzyme which is commonly found in higher plants. In these studies, the expression of two de-epoxidase genes of another Phaeodactylum tricornutum strain (UTEX 646), which is commonly used in diatom studies, were obtained in Origami b and BL21 E. coli strains. The molecular masses of the mature proteins are about 49 kDa and 60 kDa, respectively, for VDE and VDL2. Both enzymes are active with violaxanthin as a substrate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the Judeo-Hellenic writers composing in times of Roman occupation, especially on works created by Josephus Flavius, and present specific example for that kind of adaptations, presenting at the same time differences between prophets from the times of the Second Temple and those from before the Babylonian thralldom.
Abstract: The paper focuses on the Judeo-Hellenic writers composing in times of Roman occupation, especially on works created by Josephus Flavius. On the basis of his re-written version of events described in the Bible, one can observe various methods used by Josephus and other authors to accommodate their history for the needs of Greco-Roman world. One such method is depicting notable characters from the Bible in a more understandable way, particularly different prophets from the Old Testament. Those Jewish sages are described surprisingly alike to Greek philosophers, orators and commanders – figures that were well-known to Greeks and admired by them. The article presents specific example for that kind of adaptations, presenting at the same time differences between prophets from the times of the Second Temple and those from before the Babylonian thralldom. Understanding these differences is essential for explaining how Jewish scholars could find a common ground with Greek philosophers.

Abstract: Audiodeskrypcja do filmu zagranicznego z tlumaczeniem w wersji lektorskiej na przykladzie filmu pt. Duza ryba Audiodeskrypcja (AD) rozwija sie w Polsce od 2006 r. Do niedawna filmy obcojezyczne praktycznie nie byly udostepniane osobom z dysfunkcją wzroku. Powodem braku dostepności filmow obcojezycznych bylo przekonanie, iz wersja lektorska – czyli najcześciej uzywana w polskiej telewizji metoda przekladu audiowizualnego – nie nadaje sie do polączenia z audiodeskrypcją. Uwazano, ze osoby z dysfunkcją wzroku nie poradzą sobie z przyswojeniem trzech roznych ściezek dźwiekowych (oryginalna ściezka dźwiekowa, wersja lektorska oraz audiodeskrypcja). Pogląd ten stal jednak w sprzeczności z potrzebami i oczekiwaniami osob niewidomych i niedowidzących. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badania ankietowego i dyskusji w grupie fokusowej, przeprowadzonych z udzialem odbiorcow z dysfunkcją wzroku, ktorzy wzieli udzial w specjalnym pokazie filmu pt. Duza ryba (2003, rez. Tim Burton) z wersją lektorską i audiodeskrypcją.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the literary sources of Thecla's hymn from Methodius of Olympus' Symposium and found that it is closer to Origen, from whom he borrowed the concept of mystical marriage of the Church and of the soul.
Abstract: Thecla's Hymn (Symp. 285-292) - Did Methodius of Olmypus Imitate Plato? In this article the author analyses the literary sources of Thecla’s hymn from Methodius of Olympus’ Symposium. It is obvious that Methodius took over his concept of the treaty on chastity from Plato’s Symposium, but in the end of the work, or Thecla’s Hymn, is closer to Origen, from whom he borrowed the concept of mystical marriage of the Church and of the soul. In the hymn there are some common motifs with Song of Songs, especially with regard to the allegorical interpretation of love. The hymn is not Platonic, but it is a poetic summary of philosophical discussion, and praise and glory to Christ.

TL;DR: The importance of the written text as an autonomous mean of transmission in different spheres of life in Athens in the IV century BC is more complex phenomenon as mentioned in this paper, and a general sketch of this issue with particular emphasis on politics and individuals whose ambition was to have a real impact on the current affairs is presented.
Abstract: The growing impact of textuality in the classical Greece seems to be generally accepted view. However, the importance of the written text as an autonomous mean of transmission in different spheres of life in Athens in the IV century BC is more complex phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to present a general sketch of this issue with particular emphasis on politics and individuals whose ambition was to have a real impact on the current affairs. In this context the activity of Isocrates and his self-consciousness provides especially interesting material for debate.

TL;DR: Rhetorice According to the Second Book of Quintilian's Intitutio oratoria as discussed by the authors discusses the definition and nature of rhetoric, and the most common definition of rhetoric can be summed up as the power of persuasion.
Abstract: Rhetorice According to the Second Book of Quintillian's Intitutio oratoria In the second book of Institutio oratoria Quintilian contemplates the definition and nature of rhetoric. The lecture on rhetoric can be divided into three parts: on art (ars), master (artifex), work (opus). The most common definition of rhetoric can be summed up as the power of persuasion (vis persuadendi). Every element of rhetoric changes with the content of the cases, the times, the circumstances, the needs. No law proposals, no resolutions passed by the people constituted the noble rules of rhetoric; they were formed by practice. If utility will advise us to do something different, we should follow such advice and not be constrained by the authority of the former masters. The important virtue (virtus) of the teacher is to take into consideration the different talents of every student and to discover their natural predispositions. In Quintilian’s definition the speaker and his art are not dependent on the effect. Though a speaker aims for victory, then even if he lost the case he stillachieved the goal of his art, provided that he spoke honestly.
