Abstract: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a cytoprotective enzyme, can be induced in tumors in response to anti-cancer therapies We investigated the role of HO-1 in B16(F10), S91, and Sk-mel188 melanoma cells Overexpression of HO-1 after transduction with adenoviral vectors increased cell proliferation, resistance to oxidative stress generated by H2O2, and angiogenic potential as determined by induction of endothelial cell divisions Likewise, cells stably transfected with HO-1 cDNA (B16-HO-1) showed higher proliferation, stress resistance, and angiogenic activity than the wild-type line (B16-WT) HO-1 overexpression in tumors significantly shortened survival of mice after subcutaneous injection of cancer cells (38 and 22 days for B16-WT and B16-HO-1, respectively; P = 0017) This also resulted in development of more packed tumors, with more melanoma cells, and reduced inflammatory edemas Mice injected with B16-HO-1 had lower levels of tumor necrosis factor and higher serum concentrations of its soluble receptor tumor necrosis factor-RI, whereas tumors overexpressing HO-1 displayed augmented vascularization and stronger production of vascular endothelial growth factor Finally, B16-HO-1 cells injected intravenously formed more metastases in lungs Thus, HO-1 overexpression increased viability, proliferation, and angiogenic potential of melanoma cells, augmented metastasis, and decreased survival of tumor-bearing mice, suggesting that induction of HO-1 may be detrimental in anti-cancer therapy of melanoma

Abstract: Natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV) were used to describe bonding in conjugated π-electron molecules. The ‘single’ C–C bond in trans-1,3-butadiene, 1,3-butadiene-1,1,4,4-tetra-carboxilic acid, 1,3,5,7-octatetraene, and 11-cis-retinal was characterized. In the NOCV framework, the formation of the σ-bond appears as the sum of two complementary charge transfer processes from each vinyl fragment to the bond region, and partially to the other fragment. The formation of the π-component of the bond is described by two pairs of NOCV representing the transfer of charge density from the neighboring ‘double’ C–C bonds. The NOCV eigenvalues and the related fragment-fragment bond multiplicities were used as quantitative measures of the σ- and π- contributions. The σ-component of the ‘single’ C-C bonds appears to be practically constant in the systems analyzed, whereas the π-contributions increase from butadiene (ca. 7.5%) to retinal (ca. 14%).

Abstract: [1] Fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs), X-class flares, solar energetic particle (SEP) events, and interplanetary shocks were abundantly observed during the episode of intense solar activity in late October and early November 2003. Most of the 80 CMEs originated from three active regions (NOAA ARs 484, 486, and 488). We compare the statistical properties of these CMEs with those of the general population of CMEs observed during cycle 23. We find that (1) the 2003 October–November CMEs were fast and wide on the average and hence were very energetic, (2) nearly 20 percent of the ultrafast CMEs (speed ≥2000 km s−1) of cycle 23 occurred during the October–November interval, including the fastest CME of the study period (∼2700 km s−1 on 4 November 2003 at 1954 UT), (3) the rate of full-halo CMEs was nearly four times the average rate during cycle 23, (4) at least sixteen shocks were observed near the Sun, while eight of them were intercepted by spacecraft along the Sun-Earth line, (5) the CMEs were highly geoeffective: the resulting geomagnetic storms were among the most intense of cycle 23, (6) the CMEs were associated with very large SEP events, including the largest event of cycle 23. These extreme properties were commensurate with the size and energy of the associated active regions. This study suggests that the speed of CMEs may not be much higher than ∼3000 km s−1, consistent with the free energy available in active regions. An important practical implication of such a speed limit is that the Sun-Earth travel times of CME-driven shocks may not be less than ∼0.5 day. Two of the shocks arrived at Earth in <24 hours, the first events in ∼30 years and only the 14th and 15th documented cases of such events since 1859.

Abstract: A search is presented for new particles decaying to large numbers (7 or more) of jets, with missing transverse momentum and no isolated electrons or muons. This analysis uses 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The sensitivity of the search is enhanced by considering the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets in an event. No evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of various simplified supersymmetry-inspired models where gluinos are pair produced, as well as an mSUGRA/CMSSM model.

Abstract: This review presents important botanical, chemical and pharmacological characteristics of Citrus limon (lemon)—a species with valuable pharmaceutical, cosmetic and culinary (healthy food) properties. A short description of the genus Citrus is followed by information on the chemical composition, metabolomic studies and biological activities of the main raw materials obtained from C. limon (fruit extract, juice, essential oil). The valuable biological activity of C. limon is determined by its high content of phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids (e.g., diosmin, hesperidin, limocitrin) and phenolic acids (e.g., ferulic, synapic, p-hydroxybenzoic acids). The essential oil is rich in bioactive monoterpenoids such as D-limonene, β-pinene, γ-terpinene. Recently scientifically proven therapeutic activities of C. limon include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer and antiparasitic activities. The review pays particular attention, with references to published scientific research, to the use of C. limon in the food industry and cosmetology. It also addresses the safety of use and potential phototoxicity of the raw materials. Lastly, the review emphasizes the significance of biotechnological studies on C. limon.
