Abstract: Melanins form a diverse group of pigments synthesized in living organisms in the course of hydroxylation and polymerization of organic compounds. Melanin production is observed in all large taxa from both Pro- and Eukaryota. The basic functions of melanins are still a matter of controversy and speculation, even though their adaptative importance has been proved. Melanogenesis has probably evolved parallel in various groups of free living organisms to provide protection from environmental stress conditions, but in pathogenic microorganisms it correlates with an increased virulence. The genes responsible for melanization are collected in some cases within operons which find a versatile application in genetic engineering. This review summarizes current views on melanogenesis in Pro- and Eukaryotic microorganisms in terms of their biotechnological and biomedical importance.

Abstract: We report the measurement of {nu}-e elastic scattering from {sup 8}B solar neutrinos with 3 MeV energy threshold by the Borexino detector in Gran Sasso (Italy). The rate of solar neutrino-induced electron scattering events above this energy in Borexino is 0.22{+-}0.04(stat){+-}0.01(syst) cpd/100 t, which corresponds to {Phi}{sub {sup 8}B}{sup ES}=2.4{+-}0.4{+-}0.1x10{sup 6} cm{sup -2} s{sup -1}, in good agreement with measurements from SNO and SuperKamiokaNDE. Assuming the {sup 8}B neutrino flux predicted by the high metallicity standard solar model, the average {sup 8}B {nu}{sub e} survival probability above 3 MeV is measured to be 0.29{+-}0.10. The survival probabilities for {sup 7}Be and {sup 8}B neutrinos as measured by Borexino differ by 1.9{sigma}. These results are consistent with the prediction of the MSW-LMA solution of a transition in the solar {nu}{sub e} survival probability P{sub ee} between the low-energy vacuum-driven and the high-energy matter-enhanced solar neutrino oscillation regimes.

Abstract: The measurement of missing transverse momentum in the ATLAS detector, described in this paper, makes use of the full event reconstruction and a calibration based on reconstructed physics objects. The performance of the missing transverse momentum reconstruction is evaluated using data collected in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in 2010. Minimum bias events and events with jets of hadrons are used from data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 0.3 nb(-1) and 600 nb(-1) respectively, together with events containing a Z boson decaying to two leptons (electrons or muons) or a W boson decaying to a lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino, from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 36 pb(-1). An estimate of the systematic uncertainty on the missing transverse momentum scale is presented.
