TL;DR: In this paper, it is suggested that optimum control of rock failure in any laboratory test is achieved when the closed loop feedback represents the most sensitive indicator of failure, and that any required experimental output can then be independently monitored.
Abstract: Optimizing the Control of Rock Failure in Servo-Controlled Laboratory Tests Recent studies of rock failure have been made with a closed loop servo-controlled testing machine. Feedback from the failing specimen is electronically compared with a pre-determined program and the hydraulic system is continuously and automatically adjusted to ensure that feedback and program are coincident. It is suggested that optimum control of rock failure in any laboratory test is achieved when the closed loop feedback represents the most sensitive indicator of failure. Any required experimental output can then be independently monitored. This method was applied to a variety of rock specimens loaded in uniaxial compression using lateral displacement as feedback. It was possible to control the failure of some rocks which had failed explosively in previous tests where the axial displacement had been programmed to increase monotonically.

TL;DR: In this article, the starch was determined in the pasture legume Stylosanthes humilis (Stylo) by hydrolysis with amylo-glucosidase and subsequent analysis for glucose with glucose oxidase.
Abstract: Starch has been determined in the pasture legume Stylosanthes humilis (Stylo) by hydrolysis with amylo-glucosidase and subsequent analysis for glucose with glucose oxidase. Prior gelatinisation of starch granules within the plant sample by water at 130°c gave low values and it was concluded that the complete solubilisation of starch by alkali was necessary, with subsequent neutralisation of the extract with acetic acid. It was shown that the alkali also extracted material which inhibited one or more of the enzymes involved in the subsequent glucose analysis, but this inhibition was removed by treatment of the extract with charcoal. Under the above conditions the high acetate concentration decreased the efficiency of the final glucose analysis, but this effect was readily corrected by use of appropriate blank solutions. The proposed method of starch analysis is relatively economical in time compared with previous methods and is believed to give more meaningful values for plants with low starch content.

TL;DR: This phase has been suggested as the cause of the recent plague of the animal in the Pacific, for large females release many millions of eggs each spawning season and any factor which slightly reduces the mortality rate during planktonic life and settlement greatly increases recruitment into the starfish populations.
Abstract: LITTLE is known of the factors influencing survival during the planktonic phase of Acanthaster planci (Linnaeus), the crown of thorns starfish, apart from an observation of fish eating newly released eggs1 But it is not surprising that this phase has been suggested as the cause of the recent plague of the animal in the Pacific2–4, for large females release many millions of eggs each spawning season1 and any factor which slightly reduces the mortality rate during planktonic life and settlement greatly increases recruitment into the starfish populations

TL;DR: These non-linear terms are shown to be significant for vessels of the distensibility of the dog or sheep thoracic aorta, and to have little or no effect in the less distensible vessels such as the dog femoral artery.
Abstract: The pressure- relation of blood in the larger vessels of the mammalian arterial system contains non-linearities associated with the convective inertia forces, and the wall elastic properties. In the equations of the one-dimensional arterial model there are two non-linear terms expressing the convective inertia forces of the motion and the vessel taper due to pressure gradient and wall distensibility. These terms vanish in the case of an initially untapered but ditensible vessel, the terms are shown to be significant for vessels of the distensibility of the dog or sheep thoracic aorta, and to have little or no effect in the less distensible vessels such as the dog femoral artery. These non-linear terms are also shown to be important in the case of an initially tapered vessel.

Abstract: A pharyngeal rhabdomyosarcoma was found in a 6-year-old dog. The neoplasm caused an altered bark and subsequent progressive dyspnea. In man, rhabdomyosarcomas have predilection for the pharynx.

TL;DR: Venom extracted from anterior regions of the venom ducts of Conus arenatus, Conus lividus, and Conus quercinus displayed significant proteolytic activity towards casein with optimal activities between pH 9 and 10, and in contrast no caseinase activity was displayed by venoms extracted from the posterior regions.

TL;DR: In this article, a general formulation of the rate of growth of a tumor is given in terms of transport and accumulation of neoplastic cells in regions surrounding the initial site of a cancer.
Abstract: A general formulation of the rate of growth of a tumor is given in terms of transport and accumulation of neoplastic cells in regions surrounding the initial site of a cancer. A simplification of the problem is then given, followed by an explanation of the several processes involved. The special case of a spherical tumor is described and some implications of the field-theoretic approach for tumor therapy are outlined.

TL;DR: The deployment of veterinary services for disease control and animal production is outlined, particularly in the fields of extension work and research, and recommendations are made on methods of applying technical aid programmes with special reference to the role of Australia in the Indo-Pacific area.
Abstract: The contribution of veterinary science to food production and human health in the tropics is analysed. The basic difficulties arising from the environments, animal husbandry methods and sociological patterns are emphasised. The deployment of veterinary services for disease control and animal production is outlined, particularly in the fields of extension work and research. Recommendations are made on methods of applying technical aid programmes with special reference to the role of Australia in the Indo-Pacific area.
