Abstract: Drought stress negatively affects crop performance and weakens global food security. It triggers the activation of downstream pathways, mainly through phytohormones homeostasis and their signaling networks, which further initiate the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites (SMs). Roots sense drought stress, the signal travels to the above-ground tissues to induce systemic phytohormones signaling. The systemic signals further trigger the biosynthesis of SMs and stomatal closure to prevent water loss. SMs primarily scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect plants from lipid peroxidation and also perform additional defense-related functions. Moreover, drought-induced volatile SMs can alert the plant tissues to perform drought stress mitigating functions in plants. Other phytohormone-induced stress responses include cell wall and cuticle thickening, root and leaf morphology alteration, and anatomical changes of roots, stems, and leaves, which in turn minimize the oxidative stress, water loss, and other adverse effects of drought. Exogenous applications of phytohormones and genetic engineering of phytohormones signaling and biosynthesis pathways mitigate the drought stress effects. Direct modulation of the SMs biosynthetic pathway genes or indirect via phytohormones' regulation provides drought tolerance. Thus, phytohormones and SMs play key roles in plant development under the drought stress environment in crop plants.

Abstract: Human activities in many parts of the world have greatly changed the natural land cover. This study has been conducted on Pichavaram forest, south east coast of India, famous for its unique mangrove bio-diversity. The main objectives of this study were focused on monitoring land cover changes particularly for the mangrove forest in the Pichavaram area using multi-temporal Landsat images captured in the 1991, 2000, and 2009. The land use/land cover (LULC) estimation was done by a unique hybrid classification approach consisting of unsupervised and support vector machine (SVM)-based supervised classification. Once the vegetation and non-vegetation classes were separated, training site-based classification technology i.e., SVM-based supervised classification technique was used. The agricultural area, forest/plantation, degraded mangrove and mangrove forest layers were separated from the vegetation layer. Mud flat, sand/beach, swamp, sea water/sea, aquaculture pond, and fallow land were separated from non-vegetation layer. Water logged areas were delineated from the area initially considered under swamp and sea water-drowned areas. In this study, the object-based post-classification comparison method was employed for detecting changes. In order to evaluate the performance, an accuracy assessment was carried out using the randomly stratified sampling method, assuring distribution in a rational pattern so that a specific number of observations were assigned to each category on the classified image. The Kappa accuracy of SVM classified image was highest (94.53 %) for the 2000 image and about 94.14 and 89.45 % for the 2009 and 1991 images, respectively. The results indicated that the increased anthropogenic activities in Pichavaram have caused an irreversible loss of forest vegetation. These findings can be used both as a strategic planning tool to address the broad-scale mangrove ecosystem conservation projects and also as a tactical guide to help managers in designing effective restoration measures.

Abstract: Cyclophilins constitute a subgroup of large family of proteins called immunophilins, which also include FKBPs and Parvulins. They are remarkably conserved in all genera, highlighting their pivotal role in important cellular processes. Most cyclophilins display PPIase enzymatic activity, multiplicity, diverse cellular locations and active role in protein folding which render them to be included in the class of diverse set of proteins called molecular chaperones. Due to their distinct PPIase function, besides protein disulfide isomerases and protein foldases, cyclophilins have been deemed necessary for in vivo chaperoning activity. Unlike other cellular chaperones, these proteins are specific in their respective targets. Not all cyclophilin proteins possess PPIase activity, indicating a loss of their PPIase activity during the course of evolution and gain of function independent of their PPIase activity. The PPIase function of cyclophilins is also compensated by their functional homologs, like FKBPs. Multiple cyclophilin members in plants like Arabidopsis and rice have been reported to be associated with diverse functions and regulatory pathways through their foldase, scaffolding, chaperoning or other unknown activities. Although many functions of plant cyclophilins were reported or suggested, the physiological relevance and molecular basis of stress-responsive expression of plant cyclophilins is still largely unknown. However, their wide distribution and ubiquitous nature signifies their fundamental importance in plant survival. Several of these members have also been directly linked to multiple stresses. This review attempts to deal with plant cyclophilins with respect to their role in stress response.
