TL;DR: The results suggest that DCCD inhibits ATPase in vivo, just as it does in isolated membrane preparations, and are consistent with the hypothesis that the membrane-bound ATPase of S. faecalis mediates energy transductions involved in membrane transport.

TL;DR: The finding that Dio 9 and Chlorhexidine inhibit both the ATPase and net K+ uptake by S. faecalis supports the hypothesis that the ATP enzyme is involved in ion transport.

TL;DR: It is suggested that abnormalities in morphology and platelet function are related to an inhibiting effect of bilirubin on ATP-ADP-dependent systems.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Findings indicate that postmortem blood cultures give highly significant information if the blood is obtained from the heart through a closed chest and the number of sterile cultures decreases when bowel manipulation occurs before the specimen is procured, regardless of the method used.
Abstract: Four methods of obtaining cardiac blood for postmortem culture were evaluated. Cultures (aerobic and anaerobic) from 325 autopsies were studied. Findings indicate that postmortem blood cultures give highly significant information if the blood is obtained from the heart through a closed chest. The results using this technic were compared with those obtained when blood for culture was taken directly from the heart through a seared right atrium. It was found that 63% of the cultures were sterile when the blood was withdrawn through a closed chest. Of the positive cultures, 40% were considered clinically significant. In comparison, with the more commonly used open chest method, only 31.5% of cultures were sterile, with only 18% of the positive cultures being clinically significant. The number of sterile cultures decreases when bowel manipulation occurs before the specimen is procured, regardless of the method used. The interval between death and the time that the culture was taken had little, if any, effect on the results. Some cultures were sterile even though as many as 50½ hr. had elapsed after death.

TL;DR: A new method ofsliding skin flap grafts for cases of insufficient anoderm, which provides for the use of this operation with greater frequency and safety and decreases the incidence of hemorrhage, stricture, fissuring, painful scars and recurrence.
Abstract: To avoid complication after the Whitehead radical circumferential hemorrhoidectomy, preservation of the anoderm assimple flaps has been recommended by others. This paper describes a new method ofsliding skin flap grafts for cases of insufficient anoderm. It provides for the use of this operation with greater frequency and safety. All internal and external hemorrhoids, crypts, and redundant rectal mucosa can be removed. There is remarkably little postoperative pain and there are few complications. Passage of large-caliber stools postoperatively, without pain, is explained by transient denervation of the flaps and protection of the sensitive sphincter muscle. Complete relining of the anal canal with flaps, and providing a large lumen, prevents overstretching by a large constipated stool and decreases the incidence of hemorrhage, stricture, fissuring, painful scars and recurrence.

TL;DR: Glycerophosphatide phosphorus is determined in ether-methanol extracts of blood serum by a nondigestive procedure which utilizes a sulfuric-periodic acid reagent and shows good agreement with the sum of lecithin, cephalin, and lysolecith in phosphorus when the lipids are separated by thin-layer chromatography.
Abstract: Glycerophosphatide phosphorus is determined in ether-methanol extracts of blood serum by a nondigestive procedure which utilizes a sulfuric-periodic acid reagent. Sphingomyelin phosphorus is not liberated. The method shows good agreement with the sum of lecithin, cephalin, and lysolecithin phosphorus when the lipids are separated by thin-layer chromatography. Lecithin in an artificial lipid mixture is determined readily. The ether-methanol extraction gives results comparable to that of a standard chloroform-methanol extract.

TL;DR: This article found that infants are more responsive to a more intense painful stimulus and there are individual differences in the degrees to which their reactions are heightened, and that this differential in responsivity may provide an additional diagnostic parameter in the study of differences in crying behavior between normal infants and those with brain damage.
Abstract: Cinical observation indicated not only that infants are more responsive to a more intense painful stimulus, but that there are individual differences in the degrees to which their reactions are heightened. A systematic analysis of this differential in responsivity may provide an additional diagnostic parameter in the study of differences in crying behavior between normal infants and those with brain damage.

TL;DR: Aerogenic tuberculous infection of mice with small numbers of tubercle bacilli resulted in chronic tuberculosis which persisted in some of the animals for over a year, and deaths continued to occur during this period.
Abstract: SummaryAerogenic tuberculous infection of mice with small numbers of tubercle bacilli resulted in chronic tuberculosis which persisted in some of the animals for over a year. The lesions produced by this infection contained a constant number (“steady state”) of culturable units of tubercle bacilli after 8 weeks, but there was enlargement and coalescence of the lesions because of an increased number of foam cell macrophages. In conse-sequence, there was an increased involvement of normal lung tissue. Thirty-six to 52 weeks after infection, the number of culturable units of tubercle bacilli had increased beyond that of the steady state; deaths continued to occur during this period.
