A Photovoltaic Fiber Design for Smart Textiles

Abstract: In this paper, the active photovoltaic fibers consisting of nano-layers of polymer-based organic compounds are presented. A flexible solar cell, including a polymer-based anode, two different nano-materials in bulk heterojunction blends as the light absorbing materials, and a semi-transparent cathode to collect the electrons, was formed by coating these materials onto flexible polypropylene (PP) fibers layer by layer, respectively, to produce electricity. Photovoltaic performances of the fibers were analyzed by measuring current versus voltage characteristics under AM1.5 conditions. The maximum value obtained as the short-circuit current density of photovoltaic fibers was 0.27 mA/cm2. The fabrication issues and also possible smart textile applications of these photovoltaic fibers were discussed.

Domination of aggregation operators and preservation of transitivity

Abstract: Aggregation processes are fundamental in any discipline where the fusion of information is of vital interest. For aggregating binary fuzzy relations such as equivalence relations or fuzzy orderings, the question arises which aggregation operators preserve specific properties of the underlying relations, e.g. T-transitivity. It will be shown that preservation of T-transitivity is closely related to the domination of the applied aggregation operator over the corresponding t-norm T. Furthermore, basic properties for dominating aggregation operators, not only in the case of dominating some t-norm T, but dominating some arbitrary aggregation operator, will be presented. Domination of isomorphic t-norms and ordinal sums of t-norms will be treated. Special attention is paid to the four basic t-norms (minimum t-norm, product t-norm, Lukasiewicz t-norm, and the drastic product).

Volunteering and Income – The Fallacy of the Good Samaritan?

Abstract: SUMMARY This paper explores individual motives for volunteering. The analysis is based on the interpretation of volunteering as a consumption good (consumption model) or as a mean to increase individual's own human capital (investment model). We present an econometric framework taking into account self selection into volunteering and simultaneity between the volunteering decision and the determination of income in order to test these two models and to identify the underlying motives. We find strong statistical evidence for the investment model with a highly robust and significant impact of volunteering on the wage rate. Within the framework of the investment model it turns out that the number of volunteering hours plays a major role in explaining this wage premium. This supports the significance of skill acquisition to accumulate human capital, the importance of deepening of social contacts and signalling willingness to perform. As far as the consumption model is concerned we find no clear statistical evidence for its validity.

Mental distress and quality of life in a deaf population.

Abstract: High risks of mental illness within the deaf community are reported. The assessment of the level of mental distress and quality of life in the deaf community is difficult due to communication problems in spoken and written language. The deaf community is characterized by the use of sign language. A new measure of acceptable reliability using sign language is described. The interactive computerised package including special versions of the World Health Organisation's Brief Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), the 12-Item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and five subscales of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was administered to a large community sample of deaf people (n=236), and results were compared with normative data for German-speaking hearing people. The deaf sample has a significantly poorer quality of life than the general population for the physical and psychological domains (p<0.01) as measured by the WHOQOL-BREF. However, in the domain of social relationships, no significant difference (p=0.19) was demonstrated. All findings with the GHQ-12 and the BSI show much higher levels (p=0.01) of emotional distress among the deaf. Although a poorer quality of life and a higher level of mental distress are demonstrated, the similarity to the general population in the domain social relationships shows that this does not affect all domains. These findings show the need for easily accessible health services for the deaf which offer sensitive communication with them.
