Abstract: The demands on bearingless drive configurations concerning performance as well as costs are high. The proposed bearingless brushless DC motor consists of five concentrated coils in a symmetrical arrangement, which generate radial forces and motor torque simultaneously in interaction with a permanent-magnet-excited disk-shaped rotor. Additionally, tilting deflection and the axial position of the rotor are stabilized passively by means of magnetic reluctance forces. Thus, system costs can be reduced significantly compared to a conventional bearingless motor setup, which actively stabilizes all 6 DOF. Due to the nonlinearity of the plant, the use of linear control design methods alone is not suitable for achieving a high operation performance. This paper introduces a novel radial position and motor torque control algorithm for a bearingless brushless DC motor based on the theory of feedback linearization. Thereby, the combined model of translatory and rotatory dynamics can be split into independent linear systems by means of a nonlinear change of system coordinates and a static-state feedback. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract: In this paper we shall be concerned with the construction of an adaptive Landweber iteration for solving linear ill-posed and inverse problems. Classical Landweber iteration schemes provide in combination with suitable regularization parameter rules order optimal regularization schemes. However, for many applications the implementation of Landweber's method is numerically very intensive. Therefore we propose an adaptive variant of Landweber's iteration that may reduce the computational expense significantly, i.e. leading to a compressed version of Landweber's iteration. We borrow the concept of adaptivity that was primarily developed for well-posed operator equations (in particular, for elliptic PDE's) essentially exploiting the concept of wavelets (frames), Besov regularity, best N-term approximation and combine it with classical iterative regularization schemes. As the main result of this paper we define an adaptive variant of Landweber's iteration. In combination with an adequate refinement/stopping rule (a priori as well as a posteriori principles) we prove that the proposed procedure is a regularization method which converges in norm for exact and noisy data. The proposed approach is verified in the field of computerized tomography imaging.

Abstract: After a short literature review, the paper quantifies the turnover of organized crime with the help of a MIMIC estimation procedure for the years 1995 to 2006 for 20 highly developed OECD countries. The volume of turnover from organized crime was US-$ 270 billion in the year 1995 for these 20 OECD countries, rising to $ 614 billion in 2006. The worldwide turnover in organized crime had a value of $ 595 billion in 2001 and rose to $ 790 billion in 2006. These figures are very preliminary but clearly indicate the importance of the turnover of organized crime or the extent of money laundering.

Abstract: With the continued maturation of III–V nanowire research, expectations of material quality should be concomitantly raised. Ideally, III–V nanowires integrated on silicon should be entirely free of extended planar defects such as twins, stacking faults, or polytypism, position-controlled for convenient device processing, and gold-free for compatibility with standard complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) processing tools. Here we demonstrate large area vertical GaAsxSb1–x nanowire arrays grown on silicon (111) by molecular beam epitaxy. The nanowires’ complex faceting, pure zinc blende crystal structure, and composition are mapped using characterization techniques both at the nanoscale and in large-area ensembles. We prove unambiguously that these gold-free nanowires are entirely twin-free down to the first bilayer and reveal their three-dimensional composition evolution, paving the way for novel infrared devices integrated directly on the cost-effective Si platform.
