Abstract: Recent studies have shown that, in highly associative caches, the performance gap between the least recently used (LRU) and the theoretical optimal replacement algorithms is large, motivating the design of alternative replacement algorithms to improve cache performance. In LRU replacement, a line, after its last use, remains in the cache for a long time until it becomes the LRU line. Such deadlines unnecessarily reduce the cache capacity available for other lines. In addition, in multilevel caches, temporal reuse patterns are often inverted, showing in the L1 cache but, due to the filtering effect of the L1 cache, not showing in the L2 cache. At the L2, these lines appear to be brought in the cache but are never reaccessed until they are replaced. These lines unnecessarily pollute the L2 cache. This paper proposes a new counter-based approach to deal with the above problems. For the former problem, we predict lines that have become dead and replace them early from the L2 cache. For the latter problem, we identify never-reaccessed lines, bypass the L2 cache, and place them directly in the L1 cache. Both techniques are achieved through a single counter-based mechanism. In our approach, each line in the L2 cache is augmented with an event counter that is incremented when an event of interest such as certain cache accesses occurs. When the counter reaches a threshold, the line ";expires"; and becomes replaceable. Each line's threshold is unique and is dynamically learned. We propose and evaluate two new replacement algorithms: Access interval predictor (AIP) and live-time predictor (LvP). AIP and LvP speed up 10 capacity-constrained SPEC2000 benchmarks by up to 48 percent and 15 percent on average (7 percent on average for the whole 21 Spec2000 benchmarks). Cache bypassing further reduces L2 cache pollution and improves the average speedups to 17 percent (8 percent for the whole 21 Spec2000 benchmarks).

Abstract: Objective The objective was to evaluate the relationships between diabetes management self-efficacy and diabetes self-management behaviors and glycemic control. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. A convenience sample of 223 subjects with type 2 diabetes, ≥25 years old, who sought care at the National Diabetes Center in Amman, Jordan, was enrolled. A structured interview and medical records provided the data. The instruments included a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, a diabetes management self-efficacy scale, and a diabetes self-management behaviors scale. Glycosylated hemoglobin was used as an index for glycemic control. The analyses are presented as proportions, means (±S.D.), odds ratios, and 95% confidence intervals obtained from logistic regressions. Results Diet self-efficacy and diet self-management behaviors predicted better glycemic control, whereas insulin use was a statistically significant predictor for poor glycemic control. In addition, subjects with higher self-efficacy reported better self-management behaviors in diet, exercise, blood sugar testing, and taking medication. The findings showed that more than half of the subjects did not have their diabetes under control and that only 42% had attended diabetes education programs. Conclusions The majority of subjects did not have their diabetes controlled; their self-efficacy was low, and they had suboptimal self-management behaviors. Therefore, strategies to enhance and promote self-efficacy and self-management behaviors for patients are essential components of diabetes education programs. Furthermore, behavioral counseling and skill-building interventions are critical for the patients to become confident and be able to manage their diabetes.

Abstract: Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and salt stress on nutrient acquisition and growth of two tomato cultivars exhibiting differences in salt tolerance were investigated. Plants were grown in a sterilized, low-P (silty clay) soil-sand mix. Salt was applied at saturation extract (ECe) values of 1.4 (control), 4.9 (medium) and 7.1 dS m–1 (high salt stress). Mycorrhizal colonization occurred irrespective of salt stress in both cultivars, but AMF colonization was higher under control than under saline soil conditions. The salt-tolerant cultivar Pello showed higher mycorrhizal colonization than the salt-sensitive cultivar Marriha. Shoot dry matter (DM) yield and leaf area were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants of both cultivars. Shoot DM and leaf area but not root DM were higher in Pello than Marriha. The enhancement in shoot DM due to AMF inoculation was 22% and 21% under control, 31% and 58% under medium, and 18% and 59% under high salinity for Pello and Marriha, respectively. For both cultivars, the contents of P, K, Zn, Cu, and Fe were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants under control and medium saline soil conditions. The enhancement in P, K, Zn, Cu, and Fe acquisition due to AMF inoculation was more pronounced in Marriha than in the Pello cultivar under saline conditions. The results suggest that Marriha benefited more from AMF colonization than Pello under saline soil conditions, despite the fact that Pello roots were highly infected with the AMF. Thus, it appears that Marriha is more dependent on AMF symbiosis than Pello.

Abstract: Purpose To review methods used to investigate marginal adaptation of crowns and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), and to discuss testing variables employed and their influence on results. Methods Online libraries including PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid were searched for articles evaluating the marginal adaptation of crowns and FDPs using a combination of the keywords: “marginal accuracy,” “marginal fit,” “marginal gap,” “marginal discrepancy,” “fitting accuracy,” “crown,” and “FPD.” Peer-reviewed publications in English in the period 1970 to December 2011 were collected, evaluated by their abstract, and included if they met the inclusion criteria. The criteria involved studies evaluating marginal adaptation of crowns and FDPs through clear experimental protocols. Exclusion criteria involved longitudinal prospective and retrospective clinical evaluations, studies using subjective tactile sensation, and other predefined criteria. Results A total of 277 papers were identified; only 183 met the inclusion criteria. Direct view technique was used by 47.5% of the articles followed by cross-sectioning (23.5%), and impression replica (20.2%) techniques. The marginal gap values reported by these techniques varied among individual crown systems and across different systems because of variations in study type (in vivo vs. in vitro), sample size and measurements per specimen, finish line design, and stage at which the marginal gap was measured. Conclusion There was a substantial lack of consensus relating to marginal adaptation of various crown systems due to differences in testing methods and experimental protocols employed. Direct view technique was the most commonly used method of reproducible results. Also, conducting an experimental set-up of testing a minimum of 30 specimens at 50 measurements per specimen should produce reliable results. Additionally, using a combination of two measurement methods can be useful in verification of results.
