Abstract: Background The decision between pulp capping and root canal therapy after pulp exposure is a clinical issue. The aim of the authors' study was to evaluate the outcome of direct pulp-capping procedures performed by dental students. Methods The authors followed the treatment outcomes of 193 patients with 204 pulp exposures with direct pulp capping. They determined the outcome of pulp capping radiographically using periapical radiographs taken at least three years after pulp exposure. The outcome was considered as successful if the tooth was present and not associated with periapical radiolucency or root canal treatment; otherwise, the outcome was considered as being a failure. Results Overall, the success rate of pulp capping was 59.3 percent. The success was associated more with mechanical exposure than with carious exposure (92.2 versus 33.3 percent) ( P P P = .009). Patients' age, sex, and tooth location and position had no significant effect on the outcome ( P > .05). Conclusion The success rate of direct pulp capping was 92.2 percent with mechanical exposure and 33.3 percent with carious exposure. Clinical Implications Direct pulp capping is recommended after mechanical exposure with immediate placement of permanent restoration, while root canal therapy would be the choice of treatment if the exposure was due to caries.

Abstract: Computational argumentation is expected to play a critical role in the future of web search. To make this happen, many search-related questions must be revisited, such as how people query for arguments, how to mine arguments from the web, or how to rank them. In this paper, we develop an argument search framework for studying these and further questions. The framework allows for the composition of approaches to acquiring, mining, assessing, indexing, querying, retrieving, ranking, and presenting arguments while relying on standard infrastructure and interfaces. Based on the framework, we build a prototype search engine, called args, that relies on an initial, freely accessible index of nearly 300k arguments crawled from reliable web resources. The framework and the argument search engine are intended as an environment for collaborative research on computational argumentation and its practical evaluation.

Abstract: Movement of CO 2 from the atmosphere into land via photosynthesis and root respiration, the subsequent formation of bicarbonate in soil, and its storage in groundwater or precipitation as CaCO 3 in dryland soils are major processes in the global carbon cycle. Together, inorganic carbon as soil carbonate (∼940 PgC) and as bicarbonate in groundwater (∼1404 PgC) surpass soil organic carbon (∼1530 PgC) as the largest terrestrial pool of carbon. Yet, despite general agreement about its huge size as a carbon pool, controversy about the potential of inorganic carbon to sequester atmospheric CO 2 remains unresolved. We suggest that the controversy stems from the absence of a lexicon and propose a classification scheme that uses (1) calcium source illustrated by two widely recognized chemical reactions, and (2) the concept of carbonate “generations.” When calcium is derived from preexisting carbonate, an equilibrium reaction occurs that does not sequester carbon in soil carbonate but does sequester carbon in groundwater until bicarbonate precipitates as CaCO 3 . When calcium is derived from silicate minerals, a unidirectional reaction occurs that sequesters carbon in both soil carbonate and groundwater. The generations concept shows that carbon sequestration occurs only in the first generation when calcium is released directly from silicates. This classification not only enhances communication and provides a framework for quantifying amounts of fossil fuel carbon that can be sequestered within a geoengineering context, it provides more precise language for discussing the terrestrial carbon cycle through geologic time.
