Abstract: A plasminogen activator inhibitor (PA-I) which inhibits primarily plasminogen activator of the urokinase type (u-PA) was isolated from the cytosol of human peripheral leukocytes. The inhibitor was isolated using ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration and FPLC. This inhibitor has an apparent molecular weight of 45 kDa, determined by SDS-PAGE, and a pI of 5.5-5.7. The inhibitor is a fast reacting inhibitor, is thermally unstable and is inactivated outside the pH range 7-9. Treatment of cytosol to pH 9 for 30 min at 37 degrees C resulted in a large increase in inhibitory activity. Antibodies against human placental UK-I completely quenched the inhibitory activity of human leucocyte UK-I.

Abstract: The difference between urethral pressures measured along the anterior wall and those measured along the posterior wall was found to increase markedly as the stiffness of the catheter was increased and to increase by a greater amount if the weight of the catheter was increased. A method of grading the stiffness of catheters is proposed and the use of stiff catheters in past reports of urethral measurements is discussed.

Abstract: KARDIO-E is an expert system for the electrocardiographic diagnosis of heart arrhythmias. AT the present stage the system can be used as a helpful diagnostic tool in the routine assessment of ECG recordings in preventive or systematic examinations as, by cardiologist's estimation, its performance is equivalent to that of a specialist of internal medicine (non-cardiologist) highly skilled in the reading of ECG recordings. The system is also useful for instruction of electrocardiography in education of all medical profiles. This paper presents the ECG diagnosis problem, the automatic generation of the system's knowledge base and a detailed description of the system. Results of on assessment study are also presented.

Abstract: Cathepsin D occurs in two forms, a single polypeptide chain (Mr 44000) and a non-covalent complex of two peptides of Mr 14000 and 30000 that is derived by proteolytic processing of the 44000 polypeptide. The two forms from bovine spleen are closely similar in secondary structure content, in aromatic amino acid environment and in the two step denaturation behaviour. Enzyme activity is lost irreversibly on denaturation but conformation can be partially regained. The two separated chains will only refold partially and this is related to their positions in the overall structure of cathepsin D. It is suggested that the processing step is related to protein turnover.
