Abstract: In our field study we analyzed the C and H isotopic and biochemical (C, N, P, protein, lipid, carbohydrate) composition of the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (collected from the Gulf of Trieste in 1985 to 1986) and its presumed diet-net zooplankton. The mean δ 13C (-18.8‰) and δ D (-58.4‰) ratios of P. noctiluca showed enrichment in heavy isotopes relative to net zooplankton (∼2‰ for carbon and ∼30‰ for hydrogen). Both the jellyfish and net zooplankton were characterized by a linear correlation between δ 13C and δ D. C. N, P, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents of P. noctiluca were low on a dry weight basis as compared to net zooplankton. Significantly lower C:N and C:P ratios were found in jellyfish indicating a greater loss of carbon relative to nitrogen and phosphorus along the passage to a higher trophic level. Isotopic and biochemical evidence indicate that, though collected in nearshore waters, P. noctiluca depended on autochthonous marine organic matter.

Abstract: This review presents experimental realization and behaviour of the ferromagnetic nematic phase, which is observed in different suspensions of magnetic nanoplatelets. After a general introduction, the challenges in the synthesis of magnetic nanoplatelets and preparation of the nematic suspensions are discussed. A brief explanation of a simple macroscopic theory, which can be used to understand the main features of the ferromagnetic phase, follows. In the main part, four different ferromagnetic nematic systems are presented: (i) ferromagnetic suspensions of the platelets in nematic liquid crystals, (ii) dense suspensions in an isotropic solvent – ferromagnetic ferrofluids, (iii) biaxial ferromagnetic nematic suspensions, and (iv) chiral ferromagnetic suspensions. The main focus is on the formation of the ferromagnetic phases and the growth of the magnetic domains. At the end, dynamics of ferromagnetic liquid crystals and methods for their observation are briefly discussed.

Abstract: Composites of electroactive ceramics and ferroelectric polymers are important for applications since they combine the most important features of the both phases and their properties can be easily tailored to various requirements. As the dielectric permittivity is involved in figures of merit of the quantities important for applications we studied dielectric response of Pb(Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 –polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposites over a wide frequency and temperature range. It was found that though the permittivity value of the composites is high due to the high permittivity of the ceramics, the glass transition of the polymer and dielectric relaxation related to the wide-angle oscillation of polar groups attached to the main polymer chain determine the dielectric behaviour of the composites.

Abstract: The free energy of antiferroelectric smectic liquid crystals which takes into account polar order explicitly is presented. Steric, van der Waals, piezoelectric, and flexoelectric interactions to the nearest layers, and dipolar electrostatic interactions to the nearest and to the next-nearest layers, induce indirect tilt interactions with chiral and achiral properties, which extend to the third- and to the fourth-nearest layers. Although the strength of microscopic interactions changes monotonically with decreasing temperature, the effective interlayer interactions change nonmonotonically and give rise to a nonmonotonic change of the modulation period through various phases. Increased chirality changes the phase sequence.

Abstract: The International Reactor Dosimetry File (IRDF)-2002 released in 2004 by the IAEA (see http://www-nds.iaea.org/irdf2002/ ) contains cross-section data and corresponding uncertainties for 66 dosimetry reactions. New cross-section evaluations have become available recently that re-define some of these dosimetry reactions including: (1) high-fidelity evaluation work undertaken by one of the authors (KIZ); (2) evaluations from the US ENDF/B-VII.0 and candidate evaluations from the US ENDF/B-VII.1 libraries that cover reactions within the International Evaluation of Neutron Cross-Section Standards; (3) European JEFF3.1 library; and (4) Japanese JENDL-4.0 library. Additional high-threshold reactions not included in IRDF-2002 (e.g.,59Co(n,3n) and 209Bi(n,3n)) have been also evaluated to characterize higher-energy neutron fields. Overall, 37 new evaluations of dosimetry reactions have been assessed and intercomparisons made with integral measurements in reference neutron fields to determine whether they should be adopted to update and improve IRDF-2002. Benchmark calculations performed for newly evaluated reactions using the ENDF/B-VII.0 235U thermal fission and 252Cf spontaneous fission neutron spectra show that calculated integral cross sections exhibit improved agreement with evaluated experimental data when compared with the equivalent data from the IRDF-2002 library. Data inconsistencies or deficiencies of new evaluations have been identified for 63Cu(n,2n), 60Ni(n,p)60m+g Co, 55Mn(n,γ), and 232Th(n,f) reactions. Compared with IRDF-2002, the upper neutron energy boundary was formally increased from the actual maximum energy of typically 20 MeV up to 60 MeV by using the TENDL-2010 cross sections and covariance matrices. This extension would allow the updated IRDF library to be also used in fusion dosimetry applications. Uncertainties in the cross sections for all new evaluations are given in the form of relative covariance matrices. Newly evaluated excitation functions should be considered as suitable candidates in the preparation of an improved version of the IRDF that was planned to be released for testing in December 2011.
