TL;DR: The case study shown in this research represents a practical application of the green port concept with the emphasis on the overall energy efficiency improvement based on testing, deployment and demonstration of energy efficient solutions.
Abstract: The overall idea and research interest related with the development of sustainable port infrastructure evolved around the core requirements of continuous reduction of negative environmental impacts without jeopardising economic growth. The growth of trade activities and need for competitiveness on the global market are forcing ports around the world to systematically and continuously evaluate all possibilities for the optimisation and related costs reduction. On the implementation level, the greatest challenge is how to empower workers, who operate machines and work on the shop floor, to achieve enduring performance improvements. Presented research work provides a methodological approach for finding realistic solutions to the problem of the future development challenges of seaports. The case study shown in this research represents a practical application of the green port concept with the emphasis on the overall energy efficiency improvement based on testing, deployment and demonstration of energy efficient solutions. Additional emphasis was placed on the state-of-the- -art technologies and developing pilot initiatives based on modern energy solutions designed to improve efficiency in fuel consumption and emissions reduction in rubber tired gantry cranes.

01 Jul 2011TL;DR: A new approach is proposed for synthesizing the standard 12-lead ECG from three differential leads formed by pairs of proximal electrodes on the body surface that significantly outperforms the synthesis based on the EASI lead system.
Abstract: A new approach is proposed for synthesizing the standard 12-lead ECG from three differential leads formed by pairs of proximal electrodes on the body surface. The method is supported by a statistical analysis that gives the best personalized positions of electrodes. The measurements from multichannel ECGs were used to calculate the differential leads. Our algorithm searches for optimal differential leads and the corresponding personalized transformation matrix that is used to synthesize the standard 12-lead ECG. The algorithm has been evaluated on 99 multichannel ECGs measured on 30 healthy subjects and 35 patients scheduled for elective cardiac surgery. It is shown that the algorithm significantly outperforms the synthesis based on the EASI lead system with medians of correlation coefficients greater than 0.954 for all 12 standard leads. To determine the optimal number of differential leads, the syntheses for two, three, and four differential leads were calculated. The analysis shows that 3 is the optimal number of differential leads for practical applications. Because of the proximity of the differential electrodes, the proposed approach offers an opportunity for the synthesis of a standard 12-lead ECG with wireless electrodes.

TL;DR: A Monte Carlo based inverse treatment planning system (MCI) has been developed which combines arguably the most accurate dose calculation method (Monte Carlo particle transport) with a 'guaranteed' optimization method (simulated annealing).
Abstract: A Monte Carlo-based inverse treatment planning system (MCI) has been developed which combines arguably the most accurate dose calculation method (Monte Carlo particle transport) with a `guaranteed' optimization method (simulated annealing). A distribution of photons is specified in the tumour volume; they are transported using an adjoint calculation method to outside the patient surface to build up an intensity distribution. This intensity distribution is used as the initial input into an optimization algorithm. The dose distribution from each beam element from a number of fields is pre-calculated using Monte Carlo transport. Simulated annealing optimization is then used to find the weighting of each beam element, to yield the optimal dose distribution for the given criteria and constraints. MCI plans have been generated in various theoretical phantoms and patient geometries. These plans show conformation of the dose to the target volume and avoidance of critical structures. To verify the code, an experiment was performed on an anthropomorphic phantom.

TL;DR: The FTIR analysis suggested that a synergy may exist solely in the triply doped system, where the lattice symmetry and vibration modes become more coherent than in the singly or doubly doped systems.
Abstract: Taking advantage of the flexibility of the apatite structure, nano- and micro-particles of hydroxyapatite (HAp) were doped with different combinations of rare earth ions (RE3+ = Gd, Eu, Yb, Tm) to achieve a synergy among their magnetic and optical properties and to enable their application in preventive medicine, particularly diagnostics based on multimodal imaging. All powders were synthesized through hydrothermal processing at T ≤ 200 °C. An X-ray powder diffraction analysis showed that all powders crystallized in P63/m space group of the hexagonal crystal structure. The refined unit-cell parameters reflected a decrease in the unit cell volume as a result of the partial substitution of Ca2+ with smaller RE3+ ions at both cation positions. The FTIR analysis additionally suggested that a synergy may exist solely in the triply doped system, where the lattice symmetry and vibration modes become more coherent than in the singly or doubly doped systems. HAp:RE3+ optical characterization revealed a change in the energy band gap and the appearance of a weak blue luminescence (λex = 370 nm) due to an increased concentration of defects. The “up”- and the “down”-conversion spectra of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders showed characteristic transitions of Tm3+ and Eu3+, respectively. Furthermore, in contrast to diamagnetic HAp, all HAp:RE3+ powders exhibited paramagnetic behavior. Cell viability tests of HAp:Gd/Yb/Tm and HAp:Gd/Eu powders in human dental pulp stem cell cultures indicated their good biocompatibility.
