TL;DR: It is concluded that both the ethylene and jasmonate signaling pathways need to be triggered concomitantly, and not sequentially, to activate PDF1.2 upon pathogen infection.
Abstract: Activation of the plant defensin gene PDF1.2 in Arabidopsis by pathogens has been shown previously to be blocked in the ethylene response mutant ein2-1 and the jasmonate response mutant coi1-1. In this work, we have further investigated the interactions between the ethylene and jasmonate signal pathways for the induction of this defense response. Inoculation of wild-type Arabidopsis plants with the fungus Alternaria brassicicola led to a marked increase in production of jasmonic acid, and this response was not blocked in the ein2-1 mutant. Likewise, A. brassicicola infection caused stimulated emission of ethylene both in wild-type plants and in coi1-1 mutants. However, treatment of either ein2-1 or coi1-1 mutants with methyl jasmonate or ethylene did not induce PDF1.2, as it did in wild-type plants. We conclude from these experiments that both the ethylene and jasmonate signaling pathways need to be triggered concomitantly, and not sequentially, to activate PDF1.2 upon pathogen infection. In support of this idea, we observed a marked synergy between ethylene and methyl jasmonate for the induction of PDF1.2 in plants grown under sterile conditions. In contrast to the clear interdependence of the ethylene and jasmonate pathways for pathogen-induced activation of PDF1.2, functional ethylene and jasmonate signaling pathways are not required for growth responses induced by jasmonate and ethylene, respectively.

TL;DR: A complete system to build visual models from camera images is presented and a combined approach with view-dependent geometry and texture is presented, as an application fusion of real and virtual scenes is also shown.
Abstract: In this paper a complete system to build visual models from camera images is presented. The system can deal with uncalibrated image sequences acquired with a hand-held camera. Based on tracked or matched features the relations between multiple views are computed. From this both the structure of the scene and the motion of the camera are retrieved. The ambiguity on the reconstruction is restricted from projective to metric through self-calibration. A flexible multi-view stereo matching scheme is used to obtain a dense estimation of the surface geometry. From the computed data different types of visual models are constructed. Besides the traditional geometry- and image-based approaches, a combined approach with view-dependent geometry and texture is presented. As an application fusion of real and virtual scenes is also shown.

TL;DR: The results indicate that chronic vascular insufficiency and, possibly, insufficient Vegf-dependent neuroprotection lead to the select degeneration of motor neurons.
Abstract: Hypoxia stimulates angiogenesis through the binding of hypoxia-inducible factors to the hypoxia-response element in the vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf) promotor. Here, we report that deletion of the hypoxia-response element in the Vegf promotor reduced hypoxic Vegf expression in the spinal cord and caused adult-onset progressive motor neuron degeneration, reminiscent of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The neurodegeneration seemed to be due to reduced neural vascular perfusion. In addition, Vegf165 promoted survival of motor neurons during hypoxia through binding to Vegf receptor 2 and neuropilin 1. Acute ischemia is known to cause nonselective neuronal death. Our results indicate that chronic vascular insufficiency and, possibly, insufficient Vegf-dependent neuroprotection lead to the select degeneration of motor neurons.

TL;DR: In patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease, induction and maintenance therapy with certolizumab pegol was associated with a modest improvement in response rates, as compared with placebo, but with no significant improvement in remission rates.
Abstract: In this article we provide a contemporary overview of available clinical data on certolizumab pegol, a pegylated anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha agent that comprises a uniquely small protein, and its emerging role as a therapy for Crohn's disease (CD). The results from a comprehensive clinical trial program suggest that certolizumab pegol offers rapid and sustained remission of moderate to severe CD. Certolizumab pegol is an effective and well-tolerated therapy both in patients who have already received biologics and in patients who are anti-TNF naive. Benefits of therapy include a stable dosing regimen, which allows for rapid induction of a clinical response followed by long-term maintenance of response and remission under one fixed dose. Treatment with certolizumab pegol has been shown to improve function and quality of life in patients with CD, and insights into the potential mechanisms by which certolizumab pegol effects a response in CD suggest that this agent may have the potential to slow or even modify disease progression. Early therapy is particularly effective and could help control CD progression and lessen the burden of disease on patients.

TL;DR: At high energies, the molar extinction coefficient epsilon increases with the Qdot volume d(3) and agrees with theoretical calculations using the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory and bulk values for the Q dot dielectric function.
Abstract: We quantitatively investigate the size-dependent optical properties of colloidal PbS nanocrystals or quantum dots (Qdots), by combining the Qdot absorbance spectra with detailed elemental analysis of the Qdot suspensions. At high energies, the molar extinction coefficient epsilon increases with the Qdot volume d(3) and agrees with theoretical calculations using the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory and bulk values for the Qdot dielectric function. This demonstrates that quantum confinement has no influence on epsilon in this spectral range, and it provides an accurate method to calculate the Qdot concentration. Around the band gap, epsilon only increases with d(1.3), and values are comparable to the epsilon of PbSe Qdots. The data are related to the oscillator strength f(if) of the band gap transition and results agree well with theoretical tight-binding calculations, predicting a linear dependence of f(if) on d. For both PbS and PbSe Qdots, the exciton lifetime tau is calculated from f(if). We find values ranging between 1 and 3 mus, in agreement with experimental literature data from time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. Our results provide a thorough general framework to calculate and understand the optical properties of suspended colloidal quantum dots. Most importantly, it highlights the significance of the local field factor in these systems.
