Abstract: The commission of the Kaniv dam in 1973, as the last of the six dams on the lower Dnieper River cascade, changed the river regime completely. A description of these changes and their impact on the evolution of the fluvial anastomosing system form the aims of the study. The operation of the hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Kaniv significantly affected the erosion and accumulation of sediment on valley floor and thus changed the fluvial system of the Dnieper River below the dam. The HPP initially operated on a hydropeaking system (until the early 1990s) and then on a run-of-river system. This study used the indicators of hydrologic alteration (IHA), the RB flashiness index, archival topographic and bathymetric maps, hydrological and sedimentological field studies, and satellite images to assess how the magnitude and duration of changes in the flow regime affected erosion and accumulation processes on the river bed and changed the pattern of channels as well as the landforms separating them. Until the commission of the dam in Kaniv, the fluvial system of the Dnieper River in its undisturbed state was a sand-bed channel but was then transformed from a braiding to an anastomosing river system. This was achieved by bars where consolidation of vegetation on fine clastic deposits created interchannel areas and islands. During the operation of the hydropeaking system, characterised by frequent artificial flows of short duration, channels became incised and narrowed. Interchannel areas were divided up into islands. Then, after the HPP switched to working a run-of-river system, the islands began to merge again into interchannel areas. This happened as a result of intensified erosion processes in both the main and the side channels. The operation of the HPP, by changing the flow regime and sedimentation processes in the river valley, modified the natural process of evolution of the fluvial system of the Dnieper River.

TL;DR: The results indicate that sport elicits an insignificant increase in SWL and SOC in disabled sedentary people, disabled persons performing leisure sports and competitive disabled athletes.
Abstract: Background The study discusses the differences in the levels of satisfaction withlife (SWL) and a sense of coherence (SOC) in disabled sedentary people, disabled persons performing leisure sports and competitive disabled athletes. Material/Methods The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance, Pearson-correlation and a linear regression. Results The results indicate that sport elicits an insignificant increase in SWL and SOC. SOC correlates with SWL in sedentary disabled and competitive disabled athletes. In disabled persons performing leisure sports, the level of physical activity must be tuned in order to elicit a congruent increase in SWL and SOC. Conclusions Continued research on sport and wellness interventions for the individuals with disabilities is recommended. A critical emerging issue is to develop and promote evidence-based sport and wellness programs for physically disabled people in the Republic of Poland.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of supplementation and exercise on the expression of genes associated with inflammation like CCL2, CRP, IL1, IL6, IL10 mRNA in elderly women were investigated.
Abstract: In this study, we investigated the effects of supplementation and exercise on the expression of genes associated with inflammation like CCL2, CRP, IL1, IL6, IL10 mRNA in elderly women. Twenty four participants divided randomly into two groups were subjected to 6 weeks of the same health training program (three times per week). SUP group (supplemented, n = 12, mean age 72.8 ± 5.26 years and mean body mass 68.1 ± 8.3 kg) received 1000 mg of Vitamin C/day during the training period, while CON group (control, n = 12, mean age 72.4 ± 5.5 years and body mass 67.7 ± 7.5 kg) received placebo. No significant changes in IL-1, IL-6, IL-10 and CRP mRNA were observed within and between groups. However, there was a clear tendency of a decrease in IL-6 (two-way ANOVA, significant between investigated time points) and an increase in IL-10 mRNA noted in the supplemented group. A significant decrease in CCL2 mRNA was observed only in the CON group (from 2^0.2 to 2^0.1, p = 0.01). It can be concluded, that 6 weeks of supplementation and exercise was too short to obtain significant changes in gene expression in leukocytes, but supplementation of 1000 mg vitamin C positively affected IL-6 and IL-10 expression – which are key changes in the adaptation to training. However, changes in body mass, IL1 and CCL2 were positive in CON group. It is possible that Vitamin C during 6 weeks of supplementation could have different effects on the expression of individual genes involved in the immune response. Retrospectively registered.

TL;DR: Oribatid mites were investigated on Korčula Island (Croatia) in various microhabitats in an open habitat and in stone pine forest floor in late August 2004.
Abstract: Abstract Oribatid mites were investigated on Korčula Island (Croatia) in various microhabitats in an open habitat (moss on rock, moss on soil) and in stone pine forest floor (moss, litter, rotting wood) in late August 2004. Special attention was paid to the age structure of species. These mites were rather abundant but their species diversity was low. The highest density was observed in patches of moss in the forest floor, and the lowest density was in rotting wood. Among the oribatid mites, only several species were abundant (Achipteria nitens, Zygoribatula propinqua, Pilogalumna crassiclava, Scheloribates initialis, S. laevigatus, and Tectocepheus velatus). Some species were rich in juveniles, while in others the adults dominated.
