Index I Kerdo, the author proposed back in 1966, ie before the era HRV, to quantify the autonomic tone continues to be widely used. We set a goal to analyze the relationships Kerdo's Vegetative Index (KVI) with parameters of HRV and EEG, as well as with Mineralocorticoide, Calcitonin and Parathyrin Activities. Methods. In basal conditions in men, patients with chronic pyelonephritis and cholecystitis in remission, recorded Blood Pressure and Heart Rate (“Omron-4MI”, Netherland), HRV (“Cardiolab+VSR”, KhAI Medica, Ukraine) and EEG (“NeuroCom Standard”, KhAI Medica, Ukraine). In urine determining the concentration of Phosphates, Calcium, Potassium and Sodium. Results . No correlation ascertained between KVI and LF/HF Ratio (r=-0,18) and Baevskiy’s Vegetative Index (r=0,17). However, KVI weakly correlated with Power Spectrum Density (PSD) LF (r=-0,35), (VLF+LF)/HF Ratio (r=-0,32) and Baevskiy’s Stress Index (r=0,32) as well as with Parathytin Activity (r=0,33), estimated by Urina Phosphates/Calcium Ratio. Medium strength correlation (r=0,56) found between KVI and Baevskiy’s Activity Regulatory Systems Index in Orthostase. However, the strongest correlations of KVI proved with Amplitude of α-Rhythm Ongoiging EEG (r=0,57) and PSD P4-α (r=0,65). Canonical correlation between KVI, on the one hand, and the parameters of EEG, HRV and Parathyrin Activity, on the other hand, was very strong: R=0,933; R 2 =0,870; Adjusted R 2 =0,758; F (18) =7,8; χ 2 (18) =62; p<10 -5 . Conclusion. Kerdo’s Vegetative Index reflects above all Amplitude of α-Rhythm EEG and its Power Spectrum Density in Parietal and Central loci, less options HRV, but is not marker of sympatho-vagal balance. Abstract: At present, many researchers see hope that artificial intelligence, machine learning in particular, will improve several aspects of the everyday life for individuals, cities and whole nations alike. For example, it has been speculated that the so-called machine learning could soon relieve employees of part of the duties, which may improve processes or help to find the most effective ways of performing tasks. Consequently, in the long run, it would help to enhance employees’ work-life balance. Thus, workers’ overall quality of life would improve, too. However, what would happen if machine learning as such were employed to try and find the ways of achieving work-life balance? This is why the authors of the paper decided to utilize a machine learning tool to search for the factors that influence the subjective feeling of one’s work-life balance. The possible results could help to predict and prevent the occurrence of work-life imbalance in the future. In order to do so, the data provided by an exceptionally sizeable group of 800 employees was utilised; it was one of the largest sample groups in similar studies in Poland so far. Additionally, this was one of the first studies where so many employees had been analysed using an artificial neural network. In order to enable replicability of the study, the specific setup of the study and the description of the dataset are provided. Having analysed the data and having conducted several experiments, the correlations between some factors and work-life balance have indeed been identified: it has been found that the most significant was the relation between the feeling of balance and the actual working hours; shifting it resulted in the tool predicting the switch from balance to imbalance, and vice versa. Other factors that proved significant for the predicted WLB are the amount of free time a week the employee has for themselves, working at weekends only, being self-employed and the subjective assessment of one’s financial status. In the study the dataset gets balanced, the most important features are selected with the selectKbest algorithm, an artificial neural network of 2 hidden layers with 50 and 25 neurons, ReLU and ADAM is constructed and trained on 90% of the dataset. In tests, it predicts WLB based on the prepared dataset and selected features with 81% accuracy.

Abstract: Chronic inflammation is a well-recognised tumour-enabling component, which includes bioactive molecules from cells infiltrating the tumour microenvironment and increases the risk of cancer progression. Since long-term use of the currently available anti-inflammatory drugs used in cancer therapy causes numerous side effects, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an extract isolated from the Coriolus versicolor fungus (CV extract) on HUVEC endothelial cells and MCF-7 breast cancer cells in a pro-inflammatory microenvironment mimicked by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The cells were simultaneously stimulated with the LPS and CV extract. After co-treatment, the cell viability, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), wound-healing assay, production of the pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic factors (interleukin (IL) 6, IL-8, and metalloproteinase (MMP) 9)), as well as expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 and phosphorylated IκB (p-IκB) were evaluated. The results showed that the CV extract inhibited IL-6, IL-8, and MMP-9 production by the LPS-stimulated cells. This effect was accompanied by a decrease in TLR4 and p-IκB expression. The CV extract also had anti-migratory properties and induced a cytotoxic effect on the cells that was enhanced in the presence of LPS. The observed cytotoxicity was associated with an increase in ROS generation. We conclude that the CV extract possesses cytotoxic activity against cancer cells and endothelial cells and has the ability to inhibit the expression of the pro-tumorigenic factors associated with inflammation.

Abstract: Many cardiovascular diseases lead to heart failure, which is a progressive syndrome causing significant distress and limiting the quality of life, despite optimal cardiologic treatment. It is estimated that about 26 000 people in Poland suffer from advanced heart failure, and this number is growing. That is why palliative care (PC) dedicated to people living with end‑stage cardiac diseases should be urgently implemented in Poland. Well‑organized PC may not only relieve symptoms and improve quality of life in people living with cardiac diseases not responding to treatment but also support patients and their families during the dying process. Palliative care in patients with cardiac diseases should be continued during the end-of-life period. It should be implemented regardless of prognosis, and adjusted to patients' needs. Two approaches to PC are presented in this expert opinion. The first one (generic) is provided by all medical professionals incorporating PC principles into the usual patient care. The second approach, namely, specialized PC, is ensured by a multiprofessional team or at least a PC specialist who received appropriate training in PC. The model of needs-based (not prognosis-based) implementation of PC is discussed in this paper. Symptom control, support in decision-making, and sensitive, open communication are considered integral elements of PC interventions. Medical professionals developing PC in Poland should think about groups of patients with special needs like those with valvular heart disease, grown‑up congenital heart disease, and pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as elderly people. This consensus document presents main recommendations for future PC organization in Poland. Among others, we suggest changing the Polish National Health Fund reimbursement rules regarding PC and improving cardiologist education on PC.
