Abstract: To investigate factors associated with intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1,500 UK adults, recruited from an existing online research panel. Data were collected between 14th and 17th July 2020. We used linear regression analyses to investigate associations between intention to be vaccinated for COVID-19 "when a vaccine becomes available to you" and sociodemographic factors, previous influenza vaccination, general vaccine attitudes and beliefs, attitudes and beliefs about COVID-19, and attitudes and beliefs about a COVID-19 vaccination. 64% of participants reported being very likely to be vaccinated against COVID-19, 27% were unsure, and 9% reported being very unlikely to be vaccinated. Personal and clinical characteristics, previous influenza vaccination, general vaccination beliefs, and beliefs and attitudes about COVID-19 and a COVID-19 vaccination explained 76% of the variance in vaccination intention. Intention to be vaccinated was associated with more positive general COVID-19 vaccination beliefs and attitudes, weaker beliefs that the vaccination would cause side effects or be unsafe, greater perceived information sufficiency to make an informed decision about COVID-19 vaccination, greater perceived risk of COVID-19 to others (but not risk to oneself), older age, and having been vaccinated for influenza last winter (2019/20). Despite uncertainty around the details of a COVID-19 vaccination, most participants reported intending to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Actual uptake may be lower. Vaccination intention reflects general vaccine beliefs and attitudes. Campaigns and messaging about a COVID-19 vaccination could consider emphasizing the risk of COVID-19 to others and necessity for everyone to be vaccinated.

Abstract: Recent studies suggest that binary neutron star (NS-NS) mergers robustly produce heavy r-process nuclei above the atomic mass number A ~ 130 because their ejecta consist of almost pure neutrons (electron fraction of Y e < 0.1). However, the production of a small amount of the lighter r-process nuclei (A ≈ 90-120) conflicts with the spectroscopic results of r-process-enhanced Galactic halo stars. We present, for the first time, the result of nucleosynthesis calculations based on the fully general relativistic simulation of a NS-NS merger with approximate neutrino transport. It is found that the bulk of the dynamical ejecta are appreciably shock-heated and neutrino processed, resulting in a wide range of Y e (≈0.09-0.45). The mass-averaged abundance distribution of calculated nucleosynthesis yields is in reasonable agreement with the full-mass range (A ≈ 90-240) of the solar r-process curve. This implies, if our model is representative of such events, that the dynamical ejecta of NS-NS mergers could be the origin of the Galactic r-process nuclei. Our result also shows that radioactive heating after ~1 day from the merging, which gives rise to r-process-powered transient emission, is dominated by the β-decays of several species close to stability with precisely measured half-lives. This implies that the total radioactive heating rate for such an event can be well constrained within about a factor of two if the ejected material has a solar-like r-process pattern.

Abstract: Context. Several competing scenarios for planetary-system formation and evolution seek to explain how hot Jupiters came to be so close to their parent stars. Most planetary parameters evolve with time, making it hard to distinguish between models. The obliquity of an orbit with respect to the stellar rotation axis is thought to be more stable than other parameters such as eccentricity. Most planets, to date, appear aligned with the stellar rotation axis; the few misaligned planets so far detected are massive (\textgreater2 M-J). Aims. Our goal is to measure the degree of alignment between planetary orbits and stellar spin axes, to search for potential correlations with eccentricity or other planetary parameters and to measure long term radial velocity variability indicating the presence of other bodies in the system. Methods. For transiting planets, the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect allows the measurement of the sky-projected angle beta between the stellar rotation axis and a planet's orbital axis. Using the HARPS spectrograph, we observed the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for six transiting hot Jupiters found by the WASP consortium. We combine these with long term radial velocity measurements obtained with CORALIE. We used a combined analysis of photometry and radial velocities, fitting model parameters with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. After obtaining beta we attempt to statistically determine the stribution of the real spin-orbit angle psi. Results. We found that three of our targets have beta above 90 degrees: WASP-2b: beta = 153 degrees(+11)(-15), WASP-15b: beta = 139.6 degrees(+5.2)(-4.3) and WASP-17b: beta = 148.5 degrees(+5.1)(-4.2); the other three (WASP-4b, WASP-5b and WASP-18b) have angles compatible with 0 degrees. We find no dependence between the misaligned angle and planet mass nor with any other planetary parameter. All six orbits are close to circular, with only one firm detection of eccentricity e = 0.00848(-0.00095)(+0.00085) in WASP-18b. No long-term radial acceleration was detected for any of the targets. Combining all previous 20 measurements of beta and our six and transforming them into a distribution of psi we find that between about 45 and 85% of hot Jupiters have psi \textgreater 30 degrees. Conclusions. Most hot Jupiters are misaligned, with a large variety of spin-orbit angles. We find observations and predictions using the Kozai mechanism match well. If these observational facts are confirmed in the future, we may then conclude that most hot Jupiters are formed from a dynamical and tidal origin without the necessity to use type I or II migration. At present, standard disc migration cannot explain the observations without invoking at least another additional process.

Abstract: Study objectives To investigate the incidence, persistence, and consequences of insomnia and their associations with psychological health and pain. Design A population based, longitudinal, cohort study using postal questionnaires at baseline and 12-month follow-up. Sleep problems in the past month were assessed using 4 questions: insomnia was defined as having at least 1 of the sleep problems "on most nights." Questions about psychological health, presence of pain at different sites, and demographic details were included in the questionnaire. Setting Five general practices in Staffordshire, UK. Participants The questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 4885 adults aged 18 years and over registered with these practices. There were 2662 questionnaires returned. Results Of the responders, 2363 completed all 4 sleep questions at baseline: 870 (37%) had insomnia and 1493 (63%) did not have insomnia. Of those without insomnia at baseline, the incidence of insomnia at 12 months was 15%, and this was significantly associated with baseline anxiety, depression, and pain. Of those who did have insomnia at baseline, 69% had insomnia at 12-month follow-up; persistence of insomnia was significantly associated with older age. Insomnia at baseline was significantly associated with incidence of anxiety, depression, and widespread pain at 12-month follow-up. Conclusions Insomnia is common and often persistent. Older people appear more vulnerable to persistent symptoms. Our results provide evidence that the common problems of insomnia, pain, and psychological distress are intertwined and suggest that combined approaches to treatment may be needed to reduce the onset and persistence of these problems in the community.
