Abstract: Using a conceptual and nontechnical approach, the meaning of structural equation modeling (SEM) and the similarities to, and differences from, more commonly used procedures such as correlation, regression, path analysis, and factor analysis are explained. Application of the statistical technique is presented using data from a study of the relationships among stresses, strains, and physical health in a random sample of 492 community-dwelling elders aged 65 and older. Advantages of each statistical procedure are described. Theoretical issues related to the use of each procedure are presented with emphasis on the need for a sound theoretical model and match between the statistical procedure and the aims of the analysis.

Abstract: The potential energy surface of the LiH molecule is calculated using the Green’s function Monte Carlo method. The calculated correlation energy is 0.078±0.001 hartree and the binding energy is 2.56 eV. These results are within 6% and 2% of the experimental values, respectively. The Green’s function Monte Carlo method is discussed in some detail with particular emphasis on problems of chemical interest.

Abstract: Past research has examined the stress resiliency of individuals high in sense of personal-mastery. However, it has been theorized that within more collectivist cultures, a sense of shared efficacy, which we call communal-mastery, may be more central to people's resiliency in the face of challenging life circumstances. We compared the impact of sense of self-mastery (ie., "I am the key to my success") to that of communal-mastery (ie., "I am successful by virtue of my social attachments") in a prospective study among a group of rural 103 Native American women residing on Indian Reservations in Montana. We found that women high in communal-mastery experienced less increase in depressive mood and anger, especially when faced with high stress circumstances, than women who were low in communal-mastery. In addition, the beneficial impact of communal-mastery was found to be more effective than self-mastery for these women.

Abstract: To estimate numerically multidimensional director configurations in a liquid crystal cell, it is important to use the Q tensor representation of the strain free energy because it solves the problem of the difference between the directors, n and -n, in the Frank-Oseen free energy representation. In this paper, we discuss the numerical methods for calculating the multidimensional director configurations, using Berreman's Q tensor representation. Numerical issues discussed include the relaxation method for the director calculation, the liquid crystal (LC)/glass interface problem, the boundary conditions for the electric potential, and the possible ways to obtain faster convergence. We compare the calculated results obtained from the Frank-Oseen and Q tensor representations. By considering a π cell with patterned electrodes, we show the consistency of the model used with experimental observations. The calculated data explain well the position shift of the defects that appear in the test π cell.

Abstract: The phase transition temperatures, birefringence and visco-elastic coefficient of several high birefringence isothiocyanato tolane compounds were evaluated. The polarizability of these compounds was calculated by the Austin Model 1 (AM1) and Modified Neglect of Diatomic Overlap (MNDO) methods. Using these compounds, we have formulated a eutectic mixture exhibiting a wide nematic range and high figure of merit.
