TL;DR: This article found that passages with a famous main character yielded more false positive errors than those with a fictitious main character and that the errors in this condition depended on the thematic relatedness of the recognition foil.
Abstract: Two implications of Bartlett's theory of memory were tested: (a) that prose passages are stored in schematic form, and (ft) that thematic assimilation increases with the passage of time. The 5s read brief biographical passages about either a famous or a fictitious person (e.g., Adolph Hitler vs. Gerald Martin). Recognition memory for individual sentences was tested after intervals of either 5 rnin. or 1 wk. As expected, passages with a famous main character yielded more false positive errors. In addition, the errors in this condition depended on the thematic relatedness of the recognition foil. The further prediction on thematic assimilation was also upheld: Thematic effects were relatively greater at the longer retention interval.

Abstract: The evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) in ethanolic solution of a triblock copolymer (Pluronic P123) is explored for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous alumina (MA) and MA-supported metal oxides, using aluminum isopropoxide, aluminum chloride, and aluminum nitrate nonahydrate as aluminum precursors, and nickel, magnesium, iron, chromium, copper, cerium, lanthanum, yttrium, calcium, tin chlorides, or nitrates as metal precursors. The as-synthesized mesoporous oxides were characterized by a variety of techniques, such as thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, small- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, elemental mapping, and CO2 and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption. Abstract: Establishing highly effective charge transfer channels in carbon nitride (C3 N4 ) for enhancing its photocatalytic activity is still a challenging issue. Herein, for the first time, the engineering of C3 N4 layers with single-atom Cu bonded with compositional N (CuNx ) is demonstrated to address this challenge. The CuNx is formed by intercalation of chlorophyll sodium copper salt into a melamine-based supramolecular precursor followed by controlled pyrolysis. Two groups of CuNx are identified: in one group each of Cu atoms is bonded with three in-plane N atoms, while in the other group each of Cu atoms is bonded with four N atoms of two neighboring C3 N4 layers, thus forming both in-plane and interlayer charge transfer channels. Importantly, ultrafast spectroscopy has further proved that CuNx can greatly improve in-plane and interlayer separation/transfer of charge carriers and in turn boost the photocatalytic efficiency. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits a superior visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production rate (≈212 µmol h-1 /0.02 g catalyst), 30 times higher than that of bulk C3 N4 . Moreover, it leads to an outstanding conversion rate (92.3%) and selectivity (99.9%) for the oxidation of benzene under visible light.

Abstract: Changing disturbance regimes and climate can overcome forest ecosystem resilience. Following high-severity fire, forest recovery may be compromised by lack of tree seed sources, warmer and drier postfire climate, or short-interval reburning. A potential outcome of the loss of resilience is the conversion of the prefire forest to a different forest type or nonforest vegetation. Conversion implies major, extensive, and enduring changes in dominant species, life forms, or functions, with impacts on ecosystem services. In the present article, we synthesize a growing body of evidence of fire-driven conversion and our understanding of its causes across western North America. We assess our capacity to predict conversion and highlight important uncertainties. Increasing forest vulnerability to changing fire activity and climate compels shifts in management approaches, and we propose key themes for applied research coproduced by scientists and managers to support decision-making in an era when the prefire forest may not return.
