Abstract: Background The need for mental health and substance abuse services is great among those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but little information is available on services used by this population or on individual factors associated with access to care. Methods Data are from the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study, a national probability survey of 2864 HIV-infected adults receiving medical care in the United States in 1996. We estimated 6-month use of services for mental health and substance abuse problems and examined socioeconomic, HIV illness, and regional factors associated with use. Results We estimated that 61.4% of 231 400 adults under care for HIV used mental health or substance abuse services: 1.8% had hospitalizations, 3.4% received residential substance abuse treatment, 26.0% made individual mental health specialty visits, 15.2% had group mental health treatment, 40.3% discussed emotional problems with medical providers, 29.6% took psychotherapeutic medications, 5.6% received outpatient substance abuse treatment, and 12.4% participated in substance abuse self-help groups. Socioeconomic factors commonly associated with poorer access to health services predicted lower likelihood of using mental health outpatient care, but greater likelihood of receiving substance abuse treatment services. Those with less severe HIV illness were less likely to access services. Persons living in the Northeast were more likely to receive services. Conclusions The magnitude of mental health and substance abuse care provided to those with known HIV infection is substantial, and challenges to providers should be recognized. Inequalities in access to care are evident, but differ among general medical, specialty mental health, and substance abuse treatment sectors.

Abstract: Adding external, dynamic control to self-organized superstructures with desired functionalities is an important leap necessary in leveraging the fascinating molecular systems for applications. Here, the new light-driven chiral molecular switch and upconversion nanoparticles, doped in a liquid crystal media, were able to self-organize into an optically tunable helical superstructure. The resulting nanoparticle impregnated helical superstructure was found to exhibit unprecedented reversible near-infrared (NIR) light-guided tunable behavior only by modulating the excitation power density of a continuous-wave NIR laser (980 nm). Upon irradiation by the NIR laser at the high power density, the reflection wavelength of the photonic superstructure red-shifted, whereas its reverse process occurred upon irradiation by the same laser but with the lower power density. Furthermore, reversible dynamic NIR-light-driven red, green, and blue reflections in a single thin film, achieved only by varying the power density of the NIR light, were for the first time demonstrated.

Abstract: Two studies examined (a) whether biased assimilation and attitude polarization occur in the processing of stereotype-relevant scientific information and (b) the role of affect in these processes. In Study 1, individuals high or low in prejudice toward homosexuals read two fictitious studies, one confirming and one disconfirming the stereotype of homosexuality. Study 2 replicated Study 1 using a sample including individuals with moderate attitudes about homosexuality. Evidence of biased assimilation was found. Participants perceived research consistent with their attitude about homosexuality as more convincing than research inconsistent with their attitude. Evidence of attitude polarization was also found but was restricted to measures of perceived attitude change. Finally, participants reported more negative affective reactions after attitude-inconsistent than attitude-consistent information, and evidence was found that these affective reactions mediated biased processing. Abstract: Hierarchical spindle-like γ-Al2O3 materials were prepared in the form of fray ended bundles of twisted nanoflakes by a non-template hydrothermal synthesis and sequential calcination route using aluminium nitrate or aluminium chloride as precursors and urea as precipitating agent. The microstructures, morphologies and textural properties of the resulting materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques. It was found that the spindle-like γ-Al2O3 particles are composed of at least three levels of hierarchical organization: polycrystalline γ-Al2O3 at the nanoscale, oriented nanoflakes and uniform spindle-like assemblies. The hierarchical γ-Al2O3 particles prepared from aluminium nitrate show a slightly smaller size, fewer self-organized nanoplatelets and better textural properties than γ-Al2O3 prepared from aluminium chloride, due to the larger aqueous ionic radius of NO3− than that of Cl−. The reported experiments allowed us to propose the mechanism of formation of the spindle-like assemblies, which involves self-transformation of metastable amorphous aluminium hydroxide particles and their sequential cooperative assembly. The as-prepared γ-Al2O3 was found to be effective adsorbent for the removal of selective pollutants from wastewater as a result of its unique hierarchical structure and high specific surface area, indicating a promising potential of this material for environmental remediation.
