TL;DR: Students who have been known to commit violent acts should be adequately assessed for violence exposure and symptoms of psychological trauma, with special attention given to the suicide potential of violent females.
Abstract: Objective: To examine violence exposure, violent behaviors, psychological trauma, and suicide risk in a community sample of dangerously violent adolescents by comparison with a matched community sample of nonviolent adolescents.
Method: Anonymous self-report questionnaires were administered in the 1992–1993 school year to students in grades 9 through 12, in six public high schools located in Ohio and Colorado (N = 3,735). From this sample, 484 adolescents (349 males, 135 females) who reported attacking someone with a knife or shooting at someone within the past year (i.e., dangerously violent adolescents) were drawn. Four hundred eighty-four controls were also selected and matched on gender, age in years, ethnicity, area of residence, and family structure.
Results: Dangerously violent adolescents reported higher levels of exposure to violence and victimization than did matched controls. Dangerously violent females were more likely to score in the clinical range of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, anger, and dissociation than were control females and violent males; they also had significantly higher levels of suicide potential.
Conclusions: Students who have been known to commit violent acts should be adequately assessed for violence exposure and symptoms of psychological trauma, with special attention given to the suicide potential of violent females.

TL;DR: In this paper, a weighted least squaresmore data fitting method was used to define a relationship between dispersivity and field scale, where less reliable data points were not simply ignored, but rather assigned a lower weight.
Abstract: Regression formulas relating dispersivity and field scale have been suggested in the literature by few researchers, among others: Arya (1986) and Neuman (1990). These studies employ conventional statistical techniques that cannot take into account the relative reliability level of a data point. Neuman (1990), using conventional statistics, discarded the low reliability data obtained by calibrating numerical grid models against solute concentrations of large-scale plumes. Although the numerical modeling data are of low reliability, they are important to consider because of the very limited overall availability of the data. Another problem is with the slope reduction of log{sub 10} {alpha}{sub L} versus log{sub 10} L for large values of L, where L is the field scale, and {alpha}{sub L} is the longitudinal dispersivity. Neuman (1990) used a different line of best fit with a reduced slope for L {ge} 100 m. Fitting two straight lines on a logarithmic scale, one for L {le} 100 m and another one for L {ge} 100 m, takes care of the slope change to some extent, but results in loss of data points for both statistical groups. In order to provide a better statistical model using the available data with varying reliabilities, a weighted least-squaresmore » data fitting method was used to define a relationship between dispersivity and field scale. By using this technique, less reliable data points were not simply ignored, but rather assigned a lower weight. The linear model is further improved by fitting a curve through the data drawn on a log{sub 10} {alpha}{sub L} versus log{sub 10} L diagram. The analysis shows a significant difference between the weighted and the unweighted curves. Further analysis indicated that the increase in longitudinal dispersivity is practically negligible when the scale of flow exceeds 1 km.« less

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of eGovernment and internet adoption on curbing corruption, by utilizing a large panel dataset and found that eGovernment is a powerful tool in reducing corruption via telecommunication infrastructure and the scope and quality of online services, which is strengthened by greater internet adoption.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vehicle-based survey was complemented by inspections with the reconnaissance boat along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi Barrier Islands, showing that the lower floors of specially designed buildings were damaged by the surge of seawater and associated wave action.
Abstract: Hurricane Katrina (23–30 August 2005) struck low-lying coastal plains particularly vulnerable to storm surge flooding. Maximum storm surges, overland flow depths, and inundation distances were measured along the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The vehicle based survey was complemented by inspections with the reconnaissance boat along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi Barrier Islands. The storm surge peaked to the East of Katrina’s path exceeding 10 meters in several locations along the Mississippi coastline. The storm surge measurements show that the lower floors of specially designed buildings were damaged by the surge of seawater and associated wave action, while the upper floors sustained minimal wind damage. Furthermore, the storm surge measurements along New Orleans’s Lake shore indicate that the 17th Street Canal levee failed prior to overtopping. The land loss on the barrier islands resulted in an increased vulnerability of the US Gulf Coast to future hurricane storm surges.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how social factors and culture shape intentions to purchase a hybrid car using survey data from 1,083 US drivers and 783 Korean drivers, and found that self-image congruence and propensity to seek information about green products have strong positive relationships with intention to purchase hybrid cars among consumers from both countries.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to compare US and Korean consumers' intentions to purchase a high involvement, environmentally friendly product: the hybrid car.Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines how social factors and culture shape intentions to purchase a hybrid car using survey data from 1,083 US drivers and 783 Korean drivers.Findings – The paper shows that self‐image congruence and propensity to seek information about green products have strong positive relationships with intentions to purchase a hybrid car among consumers from both countries. Perceived social value associated with the consumption of hybrid cars also has a strong positive relationship with intentions to purchase a hybrid car among Korean and, contrary to expectations, US consumers. In contrast, social value associated with green products, in general, has a negative relationship with US consumer hybrid purchase intentions.Research limitations/implications – The use of a web‐based survey of drivers regarding hybrid cars may limi...
