TL;DR: The authors used survey research to test the influence such factors as ethnicity, religion and other nexus of identity have on feelings of attachment to the state in Central Asia, and found that neither habit nor attachment to a coherent set of political ideals is very helpful as the basis for individual identification with or support of the state.
Abstract: One of the problems with the now independent countries of Central Asia is that they have little history of independent statehood and even less experience of any ideological context that legitimizes a specific set of political arrangements, other than the discredited Marxist model of the Soviet system. Neither habit nor attachment to a coherent set of political ideals is very helpful as the basis for individual identification with or support of the State. Perhaps as a consequence, political operatives in Central Asian countries have opted to emphasize the centrality of ethnicity to legitimize their current political arrangements. But in Kazakhstan this presents a potential problem – the country is ethnically very diverse, has a large Russian/Slavic population and the ‘core nation’ of ethnic Kazakhs comprises a bare majority of Kazakh citizens. We utilize survey research to test the influence such factors as ethnicity, religion and other nexus of identity have on feelings of attachment to the state. Our fin...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a conceptual model to understand female entrepreneurial leadership through an exploration of the perceptions and experiences of women entrepreneurs within their leadership roles, and apply Stewart's (1982) model of role Demands-Constraints-Choices (DCC) to women entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan in order to understand their perceptions of the demands, constraints and choices they experience.
Abstract: The paper proposes a conceptual model to understand female entrepreneurial leadership through an exploration of the perceptions and experiences of women entrepreneurs within their leadership roles. The paper addresses an existing knowledge gap on entrepreneurial leadership by bringing together three key constructs of gender, leadership and entrepreneurship. We apply Stewart’s (1982) model of role Demands-Constraints-Choices (DCC) to women entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan in order to understand their perceptions of the demands, constraints and choices they experience within their leadership roles. The results of in-depth interviews with women entrepreneurs present deeper conceptualisation of their leadership enactment as a co-developing, co-constructed relational activity between leaders and others in their wider business environments and context.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify the cultural obstacles or what discourages the setting up of businesses among Singaporeans, namely, being overcompliant, too left-brained, over-pampered, and afraid of failing, and assess them as stemming from safe, orderly and affluent society and Singapore Government's father-leadership style.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper seeks to identify the cultural obstacles or what discourages the setting‐up of businesses among Singaporeans.Design/methodology/approach – Focus group method.Findings – Four obstacles: being over‐compliant, too left‐brained, over‐pampered, and afraid of failing, are identified. They are assessed as stemming from two key trends: chiefly, a safe, orderly and affluent society and Singapore Government's father‐leadership style. Several recommendations are then made.Research limitations/implications – Limitation: time and costs constraints – otherwise more focus group sessions could have been held. Future research, if a budget permits, can employ separate recorders to take notes, freeing the researcher to facilitate the discussions, extracting more information.Practical implications – The paper implies the need for several cultural changes: Singaporeans can be more entrepreneurial by taking a paradigm shift, adopting the “backpack mentality”; embracing globalised thinking and networking; a...
