TL;DR: It is demonstrated that conventional electrochemical reduction is indeed a facile and effective strategy to induce in situ self-doping of Ti(3+) into TiO2 and the self- dopedTiO2 photoelectrodes showed remarkably improved and very stable water splitting performance.
Abstract: Hetero-element doping (e.g., N, F, C) of TiO2 is inevitably accompanied by significantly increased structural defects due to the dopants' nature being foreign impurities. Very recently, in situ self-doping with homo-species (e.g., Ti3+) has been emerging as a rational solution to enhance TiO2 photoactivity within both UV and visible light regions. Herein we demonstrate that conventional electrochemical reduction is indeed a facile and effective strategy to induce in situ self-doping of Ti3+ into TiO2 and the self-doped TiO2 photoelectrodes showed remarkably improved and very stable water splitting performance. In this study, hierarchical TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTs) were chosen as TiO2 substrates and then electrochemically reduced under varying conditions to produce Ti3+ self-doped TiO2 NTs (ECR-TiO2 NTs). The optimized saturation photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency on the ECR-TiO2 NTs under simulated AM 1.5G illumination were identified to be 2.8 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE and 1.27% respectively, which are the highest values ever reported for TiO2 based photoelectrodes. The electrochemical impedance spectra measurement confirms that the electrochemical induced Ti3+ self-doping improved the electrical conductivity of the ECR-TiO2 NTs. The versatility and effectiveness of the electrochemical reduction method for Ti3+ self-doping in P25 based TiO2 was also examined and confirmed.

TL;DR: The first direct observation of photoactive layer formation as it occurs during spin-coating is reported, providing new insight into mechanisms and kinetics of bulk heterojunction formation, which may be crucial for its successful transfer to scalable printing processes.
Abstract: Spin-coating is extensively used in the lab-based manufacture of organic solar cells, including most of the record-setting solution-processed cells. We report the first direct observation of photoactive layer formation as it occurs during spin-coating. The study provides new insight into mechanisms and kinetics of bulk heterojunction formation, which may be crucial for its successful transfer to scalable printing processes.

TL;DR: An aqueous and carbon-free metal-oxide precursor route is used in combination with a UV irradiation-assisted low-temperature conversion method to fabricate low-voltage ZnO transistors with electron mobilities exceeding 10 cm(2) /Vs at temperatures <180 °C.
Abstract: An aqueous and carbon-free metal-oxide precursor route is used in combination with a UV irradiation-assisted low-temperature conversion method to fabricate low-voltage ZnO transistors with electron mobilities exceeding 10 cm(2) /Vs at temperatures <180 °C. Because of its low temperature requirements the method allows processing of high-performance transistors onto temperature sensitive substrates such as plastic.

TL;DR: A new synthesis strategy is proposed to prepare carbon anodes with ultrahigh edge-nitrogen doping for high-performance PIBs using self-assembled supermolecule precursors derived from pyromellitic acid and melamine, which endow 3D-NTCs with remarkable performances as PIB anodes.
Abstract: Most reported carbonaceous anodes of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have limited capacities. One approach to improve the performance of carbon anodes is edge-nitrogen doping, which effectively enhances the K-ion adsorption energy. It remains challenging to achieve high edge-nitrogen doping due to the difficulty in controlling the nitrogen dopant configuration. Herein, a new synthesis strategy is proposed to prepare carbon anodes with ultrahigh edge-nitrogen doping for high-performance PIBs. Specifically, self-assembled supermolecule precursors derived from pyromellitic acid and melamine are directly pyrolyzed. During the pyrolysis process, the amidation and imidization reactions between pyromellitic acid and melamine before carbonization enable the successful carbonization of pyromellitic acid-melamine supermolecule. The obtained 3D nitrogen-doped turbostratic carbon (3D-NTC) possesses a 3D framework composed of carbon nanosheets, turbostratic crystalline structure, and an ultrahigh edge-nitrogen-doping level up to 16.8 at% (73.7% of total 22.8 at% nitrogen doping). These features endow 3D-NTCs with remarkable performances as PIB anodes. The 3D-NTC anode displays a high capacity of 473 mAh g-1 , robust rate capability, and a long cycle life of 500 cycles with a high capacity retention of 93.1%. This new strategy will boost the development of carbon anodes for rechargeable alkali-metal-ion batteries.
