TL;DR: In this article, the role of international trade in industrialisation and the impact of foreign trade regime on macroeconomic performance has been a source of lasting controversy over the post war period.
Abstract: UMMARY The role of international trade in industrialisation and the impact of foreign trade regime on macroeconomic performance has been a source of lasting controversy over the post war period. This paper analyses the experience of 41 less developed countries, some of which have followed inward oriented strategies, others of which have followed outward oriented strategies. Various criterion are used to distinguish between alternative strategies and a variety of indicators of industrialisation and macroeconomic performance examined. The findings suggest that outward oriented economies have generally performed better than inward oriented economies.

TL;DR: A 95%-confidence-level upper limit is deduced for the production rate of new heavy charge +(2/3e or -(1/ 3e quarks to be 0.19 units of R) for hadronic final states.
Abstract: The R ratio for e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation into hadronic final states is measured to be 4.34 +- 0.45 +- 0.30 and 4.23 +- 0.20 +- 0.21 at c.m. energies of 50 and 52 GeV, respectively. From these values of R and an analysis of the event shapes we deduce a 95%-confidence-level upper limit for the production rate of new heavy charge +(2/3e or -(1/3e quarks to be 0.19 units of R.

TL;DR: The Sogwipo Formation as discussed by the authors is a unique uplifted outcrop in the Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea, which provides an unusual opportunity to study the palaeoceanographic history in this region during late Cenozoic time.
Abstract: As a unique uplifted outcrop in the Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea, the Sogwipo Formation provides an unusual opportunity to study the palaeoceanographic history in this region during late Cenozoic time. It measures about 54 metres in thickness under the overlying volcanic complex and is characterised by near-shore, lagoon, barrier bar, offshore, tuffaceous sand, and volcanic conglomerate facies in ascending order. From nine samples taken from the lower half of the formation, 124 ostracod species belonging to 58 genera were recovered. The vertical occurrence data show that the palaeoenvironment of the formation varied from bay to open sea, was strongly influenced by a warm current and finally filled with volcanic sediments. The geological age of the formation is tentatively regarded as Plio-Pleistocene.

TL;DR: To eliminate the hazard of laboratory-acquired HFRS, regular serological screening of laboratory rats and replacement of infected animals with seronegative stocks should be implemented.
Abstract: Laboratory-acquired haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) has been reported in many countries. A serological survey of laboratory white rats and of laboratory personnel for antibodies to hantaviruses was conducted in Singapore. Forty-four per cent (143/329) of rats were seropositive by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test but none had hantaviral antigens in lung tissues. Two of 74 laboratory personnel were seropositive but neither had a history of clinical illness. The high seropositivity rate among laboratory rats led to their replacement with Hantaan virus-free strains. To eliminate the hazard of laboratory-acquired HFRS, regular serological screening of laboratory rats and replacement of infected animals with seronegative stocks should be implemented. High risk techniques with laboratory rats, which are likely to generate aerosols, should be performed in biological safety cabinets. Serological surveillance of laboratory personnel and reporting of suspected HFRS cases are useful in the early detection of hantavirus infection.

TL;DR: In this article, a metastable phase was produced by the solidification of highly undercooled Bi-48.6 at% Sn alloy droplet samples, and during heating it was observed to melt at 116°C at ambient pressure.
Abstract: A metastable phase was produced by the solidification of highly undercooled Bi-48.6 at% Sn alloy droplet samples. During heating the metastable phase was observed to melt at 116° C at ambient pressure. The onset of the metastable endotherm was found to increase with increasing pressure, while the liquidus and eutectic temperature for the structure stable at ambient pressure decreased with increasing pressure. Based on the pressure dependence of the melting trend, the metastable phase will be stable at the expense of the stable ambient pressure structure under high hydrostatic pressure conditions (above ∼ 1 GPa). Both microstructural observations and X-ray examinations at ambient pressure revealed that the metastable phase was present in droplet samples and that the X-ray diffraction pattern was close to that of the high-pressure stable phase previously reported as a rhombic cell. High-pressure thermal analysis has also allowed for identification of the effect of pressure in promoting favourable formation kinetics and the kinetic transition from the equilibrium phases to the metastable phase at high undercooling.

TL;DR: Vitellin from the cabbage butterfly Pieris rapae L. was purified and characterized by electrophoresis, and synthesis by the fat body in 4-day-old female pupae could be induced by juvenile hormone I.
Abstract: Vitellin from the cabbage butterfly Pieris rapae L. was purified and characterized by electrophoresis. Vitellin from P. rapae is a phosphorylated glycolipoprotein of 380,000 ± 10,000 molecular weight as determined by nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Two subunits with an Mr of 150,000 and 40,000 were obtained from vitellin. The native molecule is thought to be a tetramer composed of two molecules of each of these subunits. The isoelectric point, as determined by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gels, is 6.10. Vitellin and vitellogenin were indistinguishable by immunological methods such as double diffusion and tandem-crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Vitellogenin from the hemolymph and vitellin from the ovary were quantified by rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Vitellogenin and vitellin were first detected in 6-day-old pupae, and their levels increased continuously during ovarian development. Vitellogenin synthesis by the fat body in 4-day-old female pupae could be induced by juvenile hormone I.

TL;DR: A random aromatic copolyester was prepared from 1∶1∶ 1 molar ratio of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroquinone and isophthalic acid as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A random aromatic copolyester was prepared from 1∶1∶1 molar ratio of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroquinone and isophthalic acid. The properties of the polymer were compared with those of the polyner prepared from 4-hydroxyphenyl-4′-hydroxybenzoate and isophthalic acid. These two copolyesters have different monomer sequences, but the same overall compositions. It was found that the latter exhibits much higher melting point and also higher degree of crystallinity than the former. Moreover, their crystal structures seem to be quite different. Both of them are themotropic.

Abstract: A search for pair production for fourth-generation sequential leptons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at a center-of-mass energy ..sqrt..s = 56 GeV is reported. Event topologies corresponding to the cases where one particle decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically as well as those where both particles decay hadronically were explored. We set a 95%-confidence-level lower limit of 27.6 GeV/c/sup 2/ for the mass of a fourth-generation lepton.

TL;DR: To assess the applicability of NORs associated protein (Ag- NORs) in the field of diagnostic histopathology, a silver staining was done in paraffin sections of malignant lymphomas, tonsils and reactive lymph nodes and the numbers of Ag-NORs in the nuclei of low-grade and those of high-grade lymphomas were compared.
Abstract: Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of DNA which occur in the nucleoli of cells and which possess ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The numbers and/or configurations of NORs have been thought to be related to cellular activities. To assess the applicability of NORs associated protein (Ag-NORs) in the field of diagnostic histopathology, a silver staining was done in paraffin sections of malignant lymphomas, tonsils and reactive lymph nodes and the numbers of Ag-NORs in the nuclei of low-grade and those of high-grade lymphomas were compared. A significant difference was found between the numbers of Ag-NORs in the nuclei of low-grade lymphoma (a mean of 1.3 per nucleus) and those of high-grade lymphomas (a mean of 4.2 to 8.3 per nucleus). The Ag-NORs were often observed in nuclei in areas where nucleoli themselves were not visible in H&E stain. It is suggested that this method would be of great value in the field of tumor histopathology.

TL;DR: In this article, the Jinan-Jeongeup Au-Ag deposit was likely a result of cooling coupled with boiling, showing that gold was carried as a thiosulfide complex in slightly acidic, chemically reducing fluids.
Abstract: Electrum-sulfide mineralization of the Jinan-Jeongeup Au-Ag area was deposited in three stages of structurally controlled quartz and calcite veins that fill N-S and NW-SE-trending shear zones. Radiometric dating indicates that mineralization is Late Cretaceous age (75-80 Ma). Fluid inclusion and sulfur isotope data show that ore mineralization was deposited between 330°C and 250°C from fluids with salinities of 1 to 8 wt.% equiv. NaCl and a δ34SΣ value of 3 to 6 per mil. Evidence of fluid boiling indicates a range of pressures from ?? 40 to 110 bars, corresponding to a depth of ?? 500m in a hydrothermal system which alternated from lithostatic toward hydrostatic conditions. Gold was carried as a thiosulfide complex in slightly acidic, chemically reducing fluids. Au-Ag deposition was likely a result of cooling coupled with boiling. Measured and calculated hydrogen and oxygen isotope values of ore-forming fluids indicate a significant meteoric water component in the Jinan-Jeongeup ore fluids. Comparison reveals that all Korean Au-Ag deposits display various degrees of 18O-enrichment relative to meteoric water, produced by exchange with hot igneous rocks. However, individual mines and districts have relatively narrow ranges of hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions which are directly related to their gold/silver ratios and which reflect their depths of formation. Silver-rich epithermal deposits display the smallest 18O shifts, indicating a lesser degree of water-rock interaction at shallow depths of formation ( 4.5km). This suggests a relationship between depth and degree of water-rock interaction in Korean deposits. All of these gold-silver-bearing deposits have fluids which are dominantly evolved meteoric waters, but only deeper systems with higher degrees of igneous rock interaction are exclusively gold-rich.

TL;DR: The coefficients of the thermal conductivity (kappa) and first viscosity (eta) in thin helium films are evaluated explicitly as a function of temperature via phonon-phonon, phonon -roton and roton-roton scatterings.
Abstract: The coefficients of the thermal conductivity (\ensuremath{\kappa}) and first viscosity (\ensuremath{\eta}) in thin helium films are evaluated explicitly as a function of temperature via phonon-phonon, phonon-roton, and roton-roton scattering. Above about 0.8 K, phonon-roton scattering and five-phonon processes are the main contributors to both coefficients. Below about 0.8 K, both coefficients increase exponentially with decreasing temperature. At temperatures below 0.3 K, ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{\mathrm{ph}}$ has a ${T}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$ dependence, while ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathrm{ph}}$ shows exponential and ${T}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ dependencies. In the case of ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathrm{ph}}$, the former is due to phonon-roton scattering and the latter originates from three-phonon processes. The coefficient ${\ensuremath{\kappa}}_{r}$ from roton-roton scattering varies as ${T}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, and the roton part ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{r}$ of the first viscosity is independent of temperature.
