Abstract: Onset of flowering is controlled by environmental signals such as light and temperature. Molecular-genetic studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have focused on daily light duration, or photoperiod, and transient exposure to winter-like temperatures, or vernalization1. Yet ambient growth temperature, which is strongly affected by current changes in global climate2, has been largely ignored. Here, we show that genes of the autonomous pathway, previously thought only to act independently of the environment as regulators of the floral repressor FLC (ref. 1), are centrally involved in mediating the effects of ambient temperature. In contrast to wild-type plants and those mutant in other pathways, autonomous-pathway mutants flower at the same time regardless of ambient temperature. In contrast, the exaggerated temperature response of cryptochrome-2 mutants is caused by temperature-dependent redundancy with the phytochrome A photoreceptor. As with vernalization and photoperiod, ambient temperature ultimately affects expression of the floral pathway integrator FT.

Abstract: A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ emitted from a ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is $1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.11}^{+0.18}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. This demonstrates that the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract: This paper presents empirical evidence on how education is related to income distribution in a panel data set covering a broad range of countries for the period between 1960 and 1990. The findings indicate that educational factors—higher educational attainment and more equal distribution of education —play a significant role in making income distribution more equal. The results also confirm the Kuznets inverted–U curve for the relationship between income level and income inequality. We also find that government social expenditure contributes to more equal distribution of income. However, a significant proportion of cross–country variation in income inequality remains unexplained.

Abstract: Previous research has proposed different types for and contingency factors affecting information technology governance. Yet, in spite of this valuable work, it is still unclear through what mechanisms IT governance affects organizational performance. We make a detailed argument for the mediation of strategic alignment in this process. Strategic alignment remains a top priority for business and IT executives, but theory-based empirical research on the relative importance of the factors affecting strategic alignment is still lagging. By consolidating strategic alignment and IT governance models, this research proposes a nomological model showing how organizational value is created through IT governance mechanisms. Our research model draws upon the resource-based view of the firm and provides guidance on how strategic alignment can mediate the effectiveness of IT governance on organizational performance. As such, it contributes to the knowledge bases of both alignment and IT governance literatures. Using dyadic data collected from 131 Taiwanese companies (cross-validated with archival data from 72 firms), we uncover a positive, significant, and impactful linkage between IT governance mechanisms and strategic alignment and, further, between strategic alignment and organizational performance. We also show that the effect of IT governance mechanisms on organizational performance is fully mediated by strategic alignment. Besides making contributions to construct and measure items in this domain, this research contributes to the theory base by integrating and extending the literature on IT governance and strategic alignment, both of which have long been recognized as critical for achieving organizational goals.

Abstract: Edible coatings can provide an additional protective coating for fresh products and can also give the same effect as modified atmosphere storage in modifying internal gas composition. Recently, several edible coatings for preserving fruits such as oranges, apples, and grapefruits were successfully applied. But, in some cases, edible coatings were not successful. In fact, fruit quality was worse. The success of edible coatings for fresh products totally depends on the control of internal gas composition. This article is designed to help develop a systematic means of selecting edible coatings to maximize quality and shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. Methods will be introduced to select edible coatings based on their gas permeation properties relative to controlling internal gas composition of target products.
