Abstract: Vehicle-IT convergence technology is a rapidly rising paradigm of modern vehicles, in which an electronic control unit (ECU) is used to control the vehicle electrical systems, and the controller area network (CAN), an in-vehicle network, is commonly used to construct an efficient network of ECUs. Unfortunately, security issues have not been treated properly in CAN, although CAN control messages could be life-critical. With the appearance of the connected car environment, in-vehicle networks (e.g., CAN) are now connected to external networks (e.g., 3G/4G mobile networks), enabling an adversary to perform a long-range wireless attack using CAN vulnerabilities. In this paper we show that a long-range wireless attack is physically possible using a real vehicle and malicious smartphone application in a connected car environment. We also propose a security protocol for CAN as a countermeasure designed in accordance with current CAN specifications. We evaluate the feasibility of the proposed security protocol using CANoe software and a DSP-F28335 microcontroller. Our results show that the proposed security protocol is more efficient than existing security protocols with respect to authentication delay and communication load.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2317) and B-->(D) over barD(sJ)(2457) decays based on 123.8x10(6) B (B) over bar events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. We observe the D-sJ(2317) decay to D(s)pi(0) and the D-sJ(2457) decay to the D(s)(*)pi(0) and D(s)gamma final states. We also set 90% C.L. upper limits for the decays D-sJ(2317)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D-s*gamma, D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(0), and D-sJ(2457)-->D(s)pi(+)pi(-).

Abstract: Summary Background There have been conflicting data regarding the prevalence and clinicopathological characteristics of BRAF and NRAS mutations in primary cutaneous melanoma. Objectives To solve this controversy, this study used a meta-analysis to evaluate the frequencies of BRAF and NRAS mutations, and the relationship between these mutations and clinicopathological parameters of cutaneous melanoma. Methods Data from studies published between 1989 and 2010 were combined. The BRAF and NRAS mutations were reported in 36 and 31 studies involving 2521 and 1972 patients, respectively. The effect sizes of outcome parameters were calculated by odds ratios (OR). Results BRAF and NRAS mutations were reported in 41% and 18% of cutaneous melanomas, respectively. The mutations were associated with histological subtype and tumour site, but not with age and sex. The BRAF mutation was frequently detected in patients with superficial spreading melanoma (OR = 2·021; P < 0·001) and in melanomas arising in nonchronic sun-damaged skin (OR = 2·043; P = 0·001). In contrast, the NRAS mutation was frequently evident in patients with nodular melanoma (OR = 1·894; P < 0·001) and in melanomas arising in chronic sun-damaged skin (OR = 1·887; P = 0·018). Conclusions This pooled analysis shows that the incidences of BRAF and NRAS mutations in cutaneous melanomas differ according to histological type and tumour location based on the degree of sun exposure.

Abstract: We propose to utilize azobenzene as a nanomolecular switch which can be triggered by transmitting electrons above threshold biases. The effect is explained by an electron impact trans-cis conformational change of the isolated azobenzene molecules. The molecular electronic states of both isomers have been measured with spatially resolved scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy, leading to suggested transition pathways of the electron-induced isomerization.
