TL;DR: On the 150th day after cessation of administration of organic mercury, pathological change involved not only the cerebellum but also the cerebrum and the brain stem, and two changes were observed in the granule cells.
Abstract: In rats with signs of onset of organic mercury poisoning, marked changes were noted in the granule cells of the cerebellum. In the initial stage of the disease, selective damage to granule cells was characteristic probably due to disturbance in protein synthesis. Mitochondria showed only relatively mild changes even at a considerably later stage, after disappearance of intracytoplasmic organelles from the granule cells.

TL;DR: Depression of responses to NaCl was attributed to the ionization of the receptor for NaCl, whereas facilitation of the responses to quinine was ascribed to that of the qu inine receptor-quinine complex.
Abstract: 1. Effects of pH on chorda tympani nerve responses to NaCl, KCl, sucrose and quinine of varying concentration and of the optimum temperature were investigated in rats.2. Magnitudes of responses to NaCl in concentrations of 0.1M or lower were decreased linearly with lowering of pH of test solutions below 4.0, whereas those for 0.3M and 1M NaCl were independent of pH at 30°C. Depression of responses to NaCl by low pH were greater at 10°C than at 30°C. Magnitudes of responses to 0.01M, 0.3M and 1M KCl were increased as pH of test solutions was decreased below 4.0, but those of responses to 0.03M and 0.1M were independent of pH. pH dependency of the response to KCl was in marked contrast with that of the response to NaCl.3. Magnitudes of responses to sucrose of varying concentrations were almost independent of pH, but slight decrease in the response magnitude was seen below pH 4.0.4. Magnitudes of responses to quinine of varying concentrations were monotonously increased as pH of test solutions was decreased from 4.5 to 3.0.5. Km or Michaelis constant of taste reaction was obtained from Beidler's taste equation and pH dependency of Km was examined. Thus, depression of responses to NaCl was attributed to the ionization of the receptor for NaCl, whereas facilitation of the responses to quinine was ascribed to that of the quinine receptor-quinine complex.

TL;DR: The coalescence of membranes between nerve processes and the appearance of membranous structures in all portions of nerve cell cytoplasm from body to nerve endings appear to represent the most important findings, they probably produce a profound disturbance in the system of nerve conduction and transmission.
Abstract: In 8 male albino strain guinea pigs, 1 mg/kg of methamphetamine HCl was injected daily for 7 months to 1 year to produce chronic methamphetamine intoxication and to study the fine structure of the brain electron microscopically. The following results were obtained: In view of these findings, as well as the clinical neurological symptoms in patients with methamphetamine poisoning, the coalescence of membranes between nerve processes and the appearance of membranous structures in all portions of nerve cell cytoplasm from body to nerve endings appear to represent the most important findings, they probably produce a profound disturbance in the system of nerve conduction and transmission.

TL;DR: Menard as discussed by the authors showed that these gravels were ice-rafted glacial drift, an interpretation which was strongly supported by the presence of faceted and striated rocks among the Giacomini erratics.
Abstract: DURING the cruise in July 1965 of the RV Acona of the University of Alaska Institute of Marine Science, two angular blocks of basalt (15×12×5 cm3 and 20×15×9 cm3) were dredged from the summit area of Giacomini Seamount (56° 24′ N, 146° 34′ W), at a depth of 790 m (Fig. 1). Several hundred igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary pebbles, cobbles and boulders were also recovered in the dredge haul; they showed a wide range of rounding and a very thin coating of manganese oxide, and were very similar to those recovered from the summit areas of Gilbert, Miller, Pratt and Ga-3 Seamounts in the Gulf of Alaska Seamount Province, as previously reported by Menard1 and others. Menard concluded that these gravels were ice-rafted glacial drift, an interpretation which is strongly supported by the presence of faceted and striated rocks among the Giacomini erratics.

TL;DR: Most of the muscle fibers in the walking legs of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii generate only graded electrical responses, but some fibers in extensor muscles of the carpopodite have long sarcomeres, and generate overshooting spikes that induce twitch contractions.
Abstract: Most of the muscle fibers in the walking legs of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii generate only graded electrical responses. However, some fibers in extensor muscles of the carpopodite have long sarcomeres, about 10 micrometers in length, and generate overshooting spikes that have conduction velocities of 0.3 meter per second. The spikes induce twitch contractions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of operators was used to simplify the integral expression for the Hertz vector and the relation between Hermite polynomials and their integral expressions under the condition that k R ≫ 1, where R is the distance from the dipole to the point of observation, and k is the wave number for the air.
Abstract: Method of operators is utilized effectively to simplify the rigorous integral expression for the Hertz vector, as well as the relation between Hermite polynomials and their integral expressions under the condition that k R ≫1, where R is the distance from the dipole to the point of observation, and k is the wave number for the air. The obtained formulas for the Hertz vector of the radiation field hold without restrictions on the earth's refractive index and heights of the dipole or the point of observation, except the assumption that k R ≫1, for all its simplicity.

TL;DR: The mercaptylation of 4-amino-6-piperidino-2-chloromethyl-sym-triazine with thiourea was resulted in the formation of the corresponding disulfide rather than the thiol compound anticipated, and this sulfone was confirmed to be identical with that obtained by oxidation ofthe corresponding sulfide.
Abstract: In order to synthesize a variety of 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-substituted symtriazine, 1-substituted biguanide was allowed to react with ethyl chloroacetate to give 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-chloromethyl-sym-triazine, from which the purpose compounds were derived. The reactions of 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-chloromethyl-symtriazine with amines and alkylthiols were successfully carried out to give 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-substituted aminomethyl-sym-triazine and 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-alkylthiomethyl-sym-triazine, respectively. However, in the reaction with sodium alkanethiosulfonate, it was found to result in the formation of the corresponding sulfone afforded by the partial desulfurization in the intermediately formed 4-amino-6-substituted amino-2-methoxythiosulfonyl-sym-triazine. This sulfone was confirmed to be identical with that obtained by oxidation of the corresponding sulfide. The mercaptylation of 4-amino-6-piperidino-2-chloromethyl-sym-triazine with thiourea was resulted in the formation of the corresponding disulfide rather than the thiol compound anticipated.

TL;DR: It is concluded that taste responses are not affected by these metabolic inhibitors and the enzyme hypothesis of taste receptor stimulation was discussed, based on the results of the present experiments.
Abstract: Effects of metabolic inhibitors (sodium cyanide, sodium azide and DNP) on taste response in the chorda tympani nerve of rats were studied, when they were applied on the tongue with or without taste solutions.DNP depressed taste responses but not other inhibitors. When DNP was neutralized by NaOH, its depressive action disappeared. Similar depression of taste responses was observed by addition of HCl to taste solutions. Therefore, the depression by DNP was attributed to its low pH effect. It is concluded that taste responses are not affected by these metabolic inhibitors. The enzyme hypothesis of taste receptor stimulation was discussed, based on the results of the present experiments.

TL;DR: Yoshida ascites hepatoma AH 13 cells were investigated by electron‐microscopy and by electron-histochemistry combined with the metal precipitation technique for acid phosphatase, especially giving attention to the changes of lysosome system associated with enzyme activity.
Abstract: Yoshida ascites hepatoma AH 13 cells were investigated by electron-microscopy and by electron-histochemistry combined with the metal precipitation technique for acid phosphatase, especially giving attention to the changes of lysosome system associated with enzyme activity. Abundant deposition of intracellular glycogen appeared not only in form of rosettes, but also more frequently in monoparticulate fashion. Acid phosphatase activity was detectable in vacuolated lysosomes, but their intracellular distribution was a little more random in contrast with that of pericanalicular lysosomes of normal liver cells. In addition, the tumor cell lysosomes appeared slightly irregular in size compared with those of hepatocytes. So-called myelin figures which were occasionally encountered In the tumor cell cytoplasm were also stainable for acid phosphatase. It is worth mentioning that the Golgi apparatus of AH 13 cells was also acid phosphatase positive contrary to the negative finding in Golgi apparatus of normal liver cells. Glycogen-containing lysosomes (glycogenosomes) were often found within or in the vicinity of cytoplasmic glycogen areas. The engulfed glycogen particles sometimes lost their granularity and high density, and became amorphous in appearance suggesting their lytic process within the organelle. In quite rare cases, glycogenosome membranes were stained for acid phosphatase. The metabolism in lysosome system of AH 13 cells seems to be considerably different from that of normal liver cells.

TL;DR: It is believed that fibrous cortical defect is a local developement aberration and non-osteogenic fibroma is a beneign neoplasm, the other endosteal, and there is little to distinguish the two.
Abstract: Recently we have experienced two cases of fibrocystic disease of bone.Case 1 A boy of thirteen complained of pain in both knees and a clinical diagnosis of Osgood Schlatter's disease was made. Radiographs revealed a lesion in the left tibia considered to be fibrous cortical defect. This lesion is subperiosteal. The histological picture was that of fibrous cortical defect.Case 2 A girl of twelve complained of pain in left knee. Radiographs revealed a lesion in the left tibia considered to be non-osteogenic fibroma. This lesion is endosteal. The histological picture was that of non-osteogenic fibroma. From accounts in our cases, there appears to be valid clinical distinction in that the fibrous cortical defect never gives rise to symptoms or signs whereas the non-osteogenic fibroma can do so by virtue of its size and pathological fracture. Radiologically there is a distinction in that the one tends to be subperiosteal, the other endosteal. Histologically there is little to distinguish the two. We belive that fibrous cortical defect is a local developement aberration and non-osteogenic fibroma is a beneign neoplasm.

TL;DR: From the histochemical observations of enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism in tumor cells using rat ascite hepatomas containing free cells, it was revealed that there are some differences in metabolic pattern between ascites hepatoma AH 13 and AH 39.
Abstract: From the histochemical observations of enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism in tumor cells using rat ascites hepatomas containing free cells, it was revealed that there are some differences in metabolic pattern between ascites hepatoma AH 13 and AH 39.AH 13 cells apparently had an usual anerobic glycolytic pathway showing the intense histochemical reactions for glucosephosphate isomerase, aldolase and lactate dehydrogenase, being accompanied by glycogen metabolism with predominant glycogenesis showing a histochemical reaction for UDPG-glycogen glucosyltransferase and with less predominant glycogenolysis showing the considerably intense reaction for phosphorylase. Phosphoglucomutase was also histochemically demonstrated intensely in AH 13 cells. Thereby, glycogen deposits appeared moderately in tumor cell bodies in AH 13.On the other hand, AH 39 cells had more predominantly the same anerobic pathway, but they were not accompanied by the same glycogen metabolism. Poor glycogenesis and moderately weak reaction for phosphorylase were demonstrated in the cells. Phosphoglucomutase was weakly demonstrated. Thereby, no glycogen was deposited in the cell bodies, with exception of the later stage after the inoculation. In the long-term cultivation of these two strains, the enzymatic properties of tumor cells were changeable in carbohydrate metabolism. Increase of glycogen storage occurred in AH 13 tumor cells being accompanied by an increase of the phosphoglucomutase activity and decreases of both the glucosephosphate isomerase and aldolase activities. It was due furthermore to the somewhat reduction of the phosphorylase activity. Slight increase of glycogen storage in AH 39 cells also occurred in the cell bodies, in spite of increasing phosphorylase activity. The glycogenesis presumably was intensified by the cultivation. It was also related to the reduction of the glucosephosphate isomerase activities.

Abstract: In 1937, W. P. Blount called attention to a disease which he called osteochondrosis deformans tibiae or tibia vara. This disease is characterized by a disturbance of growth localized to the medial part of the proximal end of the tibia. The condition was grouped by Blount into an infantile type which occurred in the first year or so of life, and an adolecent type which appeared between six and thirteen. We experienced three patients of tibia vara.In all three patients there was the same abrupt angulation in the upper end of the tibia.Case I. male, aged sixteen. The deformity closely followed a trauma of football at twelve years of age.The left leg was two centimeter shorter than the right. He walked with a considerable limp on the left.Case II. female, aged one and one-half years. Both legs were bowed a eleven months when she started to walk. After three months the bowing had become much exaggerated on the right. The family history was negative.Case III. male, forty years, had belateral involvement. This deformity had been noted when the patient was seven years of age, and had gradually exaggerated. There had been pain the knee for one year. There was the same deformity in the family tree.
