Abstract: The fish assemblage and diversity in relation to water quality of three coastal rivers Sita, Swarna and Varahi of Udupi district, Karnataka, India was studied. 71 species representing 7 orders, 20 families and 41 genera were recorded from 21 sites along the three rivers. Species composition varied longitudinally in relation to the environmental factors of the habitat. The downstream change in the three rivers indicates that fish assemblage changed with increasing loss of riparian canopy cover and increasing agricultural land-use. The richness and abundance of fishes were correlated with land-use type, canopy cover, pH and turbidity. Diversion of water, discharge of domestic sewage and agricultural runoff were prominent among the disturbances that alter the habitat quality.

Abstract: A stable modified carbon paste electrode based on the poly (naphthol green B) film was prepared by electrochemical polymerization method using cyclic voltammetry. The poly (naphthol green B) modified carbon paste electrode showed excellent high electrocatalytic activity towards the paracetamol (PA) and norepinephrine (NE) oxidation, with significant enhancement of the peak currents in neutral pH (7.0) phosphate buffer solution (0.2 M PBS), at the sweep rate 100 mV/s. The sweep rate and pH (6.2 to 7.8) effects on the voltammograms of PA and NE were studied. The lower limit of detection of PA and NE was found to be 1.6 and 2.0 μM, respectively. The simultaneous determination of PA and NE was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The peak to peak separation of PA and NE was about 173 mV. The interference study was carried out by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode showed good sensor for the determination of PA and NE. This method was used for the determination of real sample analysis of PA in commercial tablet and NE in injection sample.

Abstract: Abstract The present paper deals with an analysis of the combined effect of Joule heating and viscous dissipation on an MHD boundary layer flow and melting heat transfer of a micro polar fluid over a stretching surface. Governing equations of the problem are transformed into a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations by applying proper transformations and then they are solved numerically using the RKF-45 method. The method is verified by a comparison with the established results with limiting solution. The influence of the various interesting parameters on the flow and heat transfer is analyzed in detail through plotted graphs.

Abstract: In this work, we attempted to develop a simple and inexpensive colon specific pulsatile drug-delivery system using chitosan microspheres loaded with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) using an enteric-coated soft gelatin capsule. Chemical crosslinking by glutaraldehyde and interactions between the polymer and the drug were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectral study. Scanning electron microscopy of the microspheres revealed spherical shapes with smooth surfaces. Differential scanning calorimetry studies confirmed the molecular dispersion of the drug in the polymer matrix. Three different formulations (i.e., F1, F2, and F3) were prepared by the variation of the amount of 5-FU. Encapsulation efficiencies of 5.5, 10.8, and 17.9% for drug loadings of 10, 20, and 50%, respectively, were obtained. In vitro release studies were conducted at pH 1.2 and pH 7.4 (to simulate actual gastrointestinal fluid and gastrointestinal tract conditions, respectively). The results indicate that chitosan microspheres released 5-FU in both acidic (60%) and basic pH (40%) conditions, whereas the capsule (filled with chitosan microspheres) showed only 8–10% release in acidic media and nearly 90% in basic media within 12 h. The newly designed pulsatile capsule device could be used for targeting 5-FU to the colon. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012
