TL;DR: The larval ecology of prosobranch gastropods, which ranges from long pelagic plankto-trophic life histories to directly developing lecithotrophic ones, has a strong influence on larval dispersion.
Abstract: The larval ecology of prosobranch gastropods, which ranges from long pelagic plankto-trophic life histories to directly developing lecithotrophic ones, has a strong influence on larval dispersion. Because of low migrative ability in the post-larval stage, gastropod distribution must depend fundamentally on larval dispersion. It is probable that the modes of larval dispersion relate importantly to the mechanism by which prosobranch populations become isolated, and consequently to their modes of speciation. This idea is applicable for analysis of fossil material, for both biological and oceanographical information.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the mutants isolated from Escherichia coli K-12 have some defect in cell division after low doses of UV irradiation, similar to the lon(-) or fil(+) mutant of E. coli.
Abstract: Two ultraviolet light (UV)-sensitive mutants have been isolated from Escherichia coli K-12. These mutants, designated RuvA(-) and RuvB(-), were controlled by a gene located close to the his gene on the chromosome map. They were sensitive to UV (10- to 20-fold increase) and slightly sensitive to gamma rays (3-fold increase). Host cell reactivation, UV reactivation and genetic recombination were normal in these mutants. Irradiation of the mutants with UV resulted in the production of single-strand breaks in deoxyribonucleic acid, which was repaired upon incubation in a growth medium. After UV irradiation, these mutants resumed deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis at a normal rate, as did the parent wild-type bacteria, and formed nonseptate, multinucleate filaments. From these results we concluded that the mutants have some defect in cell division after low doses of UV irradiation, similar to the lon(-) or fil(+) mutant of E. coli. The ruv locus was divided further into ruvA and ruvB with respect to nalidixic acid sensitivity and the effect of minimal agar or pantoyl lactone on survival of the UV-irradiated cell. The ruvB(-)mutant was more sensitive to nalidixic acid than were ruvA(-) and the parent strain. There was a great increase in the surviving fraction of the UV-irradiated ruvB(-) mutant when it was plated on minimal agar or L agar containing pantoyl lactone. No such increase in survival was observed in the ruvA(-) mutant.

TL;DR: The absorption, distribution and excretion of d-limonene were investigated in rats using the 14C-labelled compound and radioactivity in liver, kidney and blood was higher than in other tissues, but was negligible 48 h after administration.
Abstract: 1. The absorption, distribution and excretion of d-limonene were investigated in rats using the 14C-labelled compound.2. The highest concentration of radioactivity in blood was obtained 2 h after oral administration of [14C]d-limonene and most occurred in the serum fraction. Radioactivity in the tissues reached maximum 1 or 2 h after administration. Radioactivity in liver, kidney and blood was higher than in other tissues, but was negligible 48 h after administration. An autoradiographic study confirmed these findings of tissue distribution.3. About 60% of administered radioactivity was recovered from urine, 5% from faeces and 2% from expired CO2 within 48 h. In bile duct cannulated rats, about 25% of the dose was excreted in bile within 24 h.

TL;DR: In this article, the high frequency part (10 Hz∼50 Hz) of the one-dimensional wave spectrum was measured in a wind-wave channel under accurately controlled conditions.
Abstract: The high frequency part (10 Hz∼50 Hz) of the one-dimensional wave spectrum was measured in a wind-wave channel under accurately controlled conditions. The results are compared with the spectral forms for the capillary range that have been proposed recently byPierson andStacy (1973) andToba (1973). In a general sense, fairly good agreement is found between the present results and those ofPierson andStacy (1973) and ofToba (1973). The spectrum in the capillary range is clearly wind speed dependent, and the spectral density in that range increases with increasing wind speed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the self-diffusion coefficient of single crystal spinels was determined for three compositions of MgO · Al2O3, Mg O · 1.2Al 2O3 and Mg o · 2.2O 3 by a gas-solid exchange technique utilizing 18O as a tracer.
Abstract: Oxygen self‐diffusion coefficients in single crystal spinels were determined for three compositions of MgO · Al2O3, MgO · 1.2Al2O3, and MgO · 2.2Al2O3 by a gas‐solid exchange technique utilizing 18O as a tracer. The temperature dependence of the self‐diffusion coefficient for MgO · Al2O3 was expressed as D = 0.89 exp(− 105 × 103/RT) cm2/sec. The self‐diffusion coefficients for MgO · 1.2Al2O3 and MgO · 2.2Al2O3 were close to that for MgO · Al2O3, which was interpreted as being due to intrinsic diffusion. The determined self‐diffusion coefficient of oxygen ion was smaller by several orders of magnitude than that of magnesium ion and was closer to the apparent diffusion coefficients calculated from the sintering rates. The influence of surface exchange reaction was noticed in determining the self‐diffusion coefficient.

TL;DR: Because a remarkably high lung cancer mortality rate was noted among males in a certain town, a case control study was carried out on the basis of mortality cards, and the occupational cancer was diagnosed at a higher rate than the tumors of other lung cancer cases.
Abstract: Because a remarkably high lung cancer mortality rate was noted among males in a certain town, a case control study was carried out on the basis of mortality cards. The case group consisted of 19 males who died from lung cancer and the control group included 19 males who had died from diseases other than cancer of the lung, urinary bladder, and skin. The only significant difference between the groups was that 11 of the 19 who had died from lung cancer had been employed as smelters in a local copper refinery. Prolonged exposure to arsenic, and possibly also other compounds, seemed to be associated with cancer of the lung. The validity of the diagnosis of these lung cancer cases was also checked by blind examination of chest X-ray films of the patients with occupational cancer, a group of other lung cancer patients, and the controls. The occupational cancer was diagnosed at a higher rate than the tumors of other lung cancer cases. In all the 11 cases, the disease had become manifest after the men had stopped working at the refinery. None of them had been considered as having occupational cancer by the physicians who treated them, their previous employer, the authorities concerned, their family and friends, or indeed themselves, until this study was conducted. The necessity of a lifelong health care system for ex-smelters from copper refineries was emphasized.

Abstract: Pathological and biochemical studies were performed on a patient with Fabry's disease. Abnormal deposits in the nervous system were restricted mainly to neurons of the autonomic nervous system. Affected neurons were found in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei, the midline nucleus, substriatal grey, nucleus amygdalae, presubiculum of hippocampus, fifth and sixth cortical layers of the parahippocampus and inferior temporal gyrus, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, superior and inferior salivatory nuclei, Edinger-Westphal nucleus, reticular formation of the pons and medulla oblongata, trigeminal ganglia, non-pigmented cells of the substantia nigra, intermediolateral column, spinal dorsal root ganglia, sympathetic ganglia and the submucous and myenteric plexuses. Abnormal deposits were found also in the periventricular glial cells, perineurium, the endothelial and smooth muscle cells of blood vessels throughout the body, the heart, kidneys and reticuloendothelial cells of many organs. The histogram of the sural nerve showed a decrease in the smaller myelinated and unmyelinated fibers. The abnormal deposits were glycolipids, CTH and CDH. Although there were two distinct staining characteristics of the deposited material with Luxol fast blue and PAS in paraffin section, these differently stained deposits could not be differentiated by histochemical and biochemical studies.

TL;DR: The three dorsal ocelli of worker honeybees have been studied by light and electron microscopy as discussed by the authors, and fine structural evidence suggests that retinular axons end presynaptically on both types of ocellar nerve fibers.
Abstract: The three dorsal ocelli of worker honeybees have been studied by light and electron microscopy. Each ocellus has a single flattened spheroidal lens and about 800 elongated retinular cells. Retinular cells are paired and form a two-part plate-like rhabdom between their distal processes. Each rhabdomere comprises parallel microvilli projecting laterally from the apposed retinular cells. Primary receptor cell axons synapse within the ocellus with ocellar nerve fibers of two different calibers. Each ocellus has eight thick fibers ca 10 mm in diameter and several thinner ones less than 3 mm in diameter. Fine structural evidence suggests that retinular axons end presynaptically on both types of ocellar nerve fibers. Since all retinular cells apparently synapse repeatedly with the thick fibers this involves a convergence of about 100:1. Thick fibers always terminate postsynaptically within the ocellus while thin fibers terminate presynaptically on other thin fibers, thick fibers or retinular axons. Structural evidence for synaptic polarization indicates that retinular cells and thick fibers are afferent, thin fibers efferent. Thus complex processing of the ocellar visual input can occur before the secondary neurons of the three ocelli converge to form the single short ocellar nerve which runs to the posterior forebrain.

TL;DR: In this article, the formation of a high concentration of alcohol in sake mash is related to the lipid metabolism of the yeasts, especially linoleic acid, incorporated to the yeast cells grown anaerobically in the statical fermentation test.
Abstract: By use of the chemically defined synthetic medium, the formation of high concentration of alcohol, reaching 20–21 percent, was accomplished by Saccharomyces sake, at 20°C within 20 days, under a gradual addition of sucrose. Unsaturated fatty acid-containing phospholipid- macromolecule (albumin or methylcellulose) complex was the essential structure for the high concentration alcohol-producing factor. Unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, incorporated to the yeast cells grown anaerobically in the statical fermentation test from the koji mold phosphatidylcholine-methylcellulose complex. These data show that the formation of a high concentration of alcohol in sake mash is related to the lipid metabolism of the yeasts.

TL;DR: In this article, a column packed with glass spheres of 3 different sizes (2.59-12.2 mm) was measured for two-phase cocurrent flow of O2-water and CO2-NaOH systems.
Abstract: Volumetric absorption coefficient (ka)lg, specific interfacial area alg and mass transfer coefficient klg were measured for two-phase cocurrent flow of O2-water and CO2-NaOH systems in a column packed with glass spheres of 3 different sizes (2.59-12.2 mm). Values of (ka)lg observed were so high as to be that can be hardly attainable in conventional gas-liquid contactors. This is due to large alg of small bubbles dispersed in liquid where alg very often exceeds the geometrical surface area of packing. Values of klg range from 2 to 8×10-4m/sec, which are comparable to that of circulating bubbles in the usual systems. The effect of superficial gas velocity on (ka)lg and alg is much greater than that in a countercurrent packed column, while the effect of liquid velocity is approximately same. A liquid-phase energy loss El per unit volume of liquid contained in a bed was newly defined as a measure of microscopic flow intensity and was used for discussion and correlation of mass transfer properties. It was found that the bubble diameter is proportional to El-2/5.

TL;DR: In this article, the macroscopic relations between the pressure drop and the flow rate were found to be in fairly good agreement with the results obtained by application of the conventional variational principle.
Abstract: Non-Newtonian fluid flow in an eccentric annulus was studied for high polymer aqueous solutions of CMC, HEC and MC. The macroscopic relations between the pressure drop and the flow rate were found to be in fairly good agreement with the results obtained by application of the conventional variational principle. Velocity profiles were measured by a hydrogen bubble method in which photographs were taken of the hydrogen bubbles. The authors observed very interesting secondary flows in the eccentric non-Newtonian fluid flow which may be due to the viscoelastic effect of the high polymer aqueous solution. The authors could not observe such secondary flows for non-Newtonian fluids in a concentric annulus or Newtonian fluids in an eccentric annulus. The authors present an equation giving the relation between the flow rate and the pressure drop for the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid in an eccentric annulus in terms of the experimental data for flow in a circular tube.
