TL;DR: This study showed poor long-term results of the posterior bone block procedure for posterior instability and a high rate of glenohumeral osteoarthritis although three patients with post-traumatic instability were pleased with the result of their operations.
Abstract: J Bone Joint Surg [Br] 2010;92-B:651-5. Received 30 September 2009; Accepted after revision 26 January 2010 We present the long-term outcome, at a median of 18 years (12.8 to 23.5) of open posterior bone block stabilisation for recurrent posterior instability of the shoulder in a heterogenous group of 11 patients previously reported on in 2001 at a median follow-up of six years. We found that five (45%) would not have chosen the operation again, and that four (36%) had further posterior dislocation. Clinical outcome was significantly worse after 18 years than after six years of follow-up (median Rowe score of 60 versus 90 (p = 0.027)). The median Western Ontario Shoulder Index was 60% (37% to 100%) at 18 years’ follow-up, which is a moderate score. At the time of surgery four (36%) had glenohumeral radiological osteoarthritis, which was present in all after 18 years. This study showed poor long-term results of the posterior bone block procedure for posterior instability and a high rate of glenohumeral osteoarthritis although three patients with post-traumatic instability were pleased with the result of their operations.

TL;DR: In this article, experiments on the vortex shedding frequencies of various rectangular cylinders were conducted in a wind tunnel and in a water tank and the results show how Strouhal number varies with a width-to-height ratio of the cylinders in the range of Reynolds number between 70 and 2 × l04.
Abstract: Experiments on the vortex-shedding frequencies of various rectangular cylinders were conducted in a wind tunnel and in a water tank. The results show how Strouhal number varies with a width-to-height ratio of the cylinders in the range of Reynolds number between 70 and 2 × l04. There is found to exist a certain range of Reynolds number for the cylinders with the width-to-height ratios of 2 and 3 where flow pattern abruptly changes with a sudden discontinuity in Strouhal number. The changes in flow pattern corresponding to the discontinuity of Strouhal number have been confirmed by means of measurements of velocity distribution and flow visualization. These data are compared with those of other investigators. The experimental results have been found to show a good agreement with those of numerical calculations.

TL;DR: DNA sequences complementary to the Torpedo californica electroplax mRNA coding for the α-subunit precursor of the acetylcholine receptor were cloned and indicated that the precursor consists of 461 amino acids including a prepeptide of 24 amino acids.
Abstract: DNA sequences complementary to the Torpedo californica electroplax mRNA coding for the α-subunit precursor of the acetylcholine receptor were cloned. The nucleotide sequence of the cloned cDNA indicates that the precursor consists of 461 amino acids including a prepeptide of 24 amino acids. Possible sites for acetylcholine binding and antigenic determinants on the α-subunit molecule are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the minimal S U(3)×S U(2)×U(1)→U( 1)em gauge model with softly broken supersymmetry is studied in the framework of the standard grand unification.
Abstract: The minimal S U(3)× S U(2)× U(1) gauge model with softly broken supersymmetry is studied in the framework of the standard grand unification. It is assumed that the supersymmetry is left intact at an energy scale μ≃ M_X, the grand unification mass scale, except for Majorana masses of gauge fermions. The other soft breaking parameters at low energies are shown to be generated by renormalization effects. The gauge symmetry breaking S U(2)× U(1)→ U(1)em is also caused through radiative corrections. The super-GIM mechanism apparently works well to suppress flavor changing neutral interactions. The mass of the top quark is remarkably found to be constrained as 60 GeV ≾ mt ≾ 180 GeV. Futhermore various mass relations for unconventional particles are obtained as well as crude estimates for numerical masses of them. It is found that there is a plethola of new particles in a mass range from a few tens of GeV to a few hundred GeV.

TL;DR: Serum melatonin concentrations were determined by RIA in 81 healthy humans, aged 1–92 yr and the results suggest that serum melatonin may be secreted under the agerelated neural control of pineal metabolism.
Abstract: Serum melatonin concentrations were determined by RIA in 81 healthy humans, aged 1–92 yr. The daytime (0900–1100 h) serum levels of melatonin decreased progressively with advancing age. No sex difference was noted. The nocturnal rise of serum melatonin in the aged group was significantly reduced compared with that in the young group. These results suggest that serum melatonin may be secreted under the agerelated neural control of pineal metabolism.

TL;DR: Results indicate that decreased intestinal absorption of cholesterol, and increased fecal steroid excretion are primarily responsible for the antihypercholesterolemic effect of soy protein compared with casein.
Abstract: Given evidence of a hypocholesterolemic effect in rats, soy protein compared with casein showed the following effects on cholesterol dynamics: a) lower cholesterol absorption and greater fecal steroid excretion, b) more rapid turnover of serum cholesterol, c) a marked size reduction of the rapidly exchangeable cholesterol pool (pool A) through a significant increase in the removal rate in that compartment without influencing the production rate, and d) greater hepatic sterogenesis both in vitro and in vivo. In contrast, the amino acid mixture equivalent to soy protein compared with casein-type mixture showed: a) no effects on cholesterol absorption and fecal steroid excretion, b) no effects on the turnover of serum cholesterol, c) the reduction of pool A size as a result of decreased production, and d) the reduction of hepatic steroidogenesis in vitro, but not in vivo. These results indicate that decreased intestinal absorption of cholesterol, and increased fecal steroid excretion are primarily responsible for the antihypercholesterolemic effect of soy protein compared with casein. The fecal loss of steroids far outweighs the activation of hepatic steroidogenesis. In the case of the soy protein-type amino acid mixture, the depression of hepatic cholesterol synthesis seems accountable for reducing serum cholesterol levels.

TL;DR: The clinicopathologic evidence presented supports the hypothesis that the glomus tumor is a tumor‐like lesion of mesodermal disorder rather than a true neoplasm.
Abstract: This clinicopathologic study concerns 63 instances of glomus tumor of the soft tissues. The tumors occurred at different ages but were more common in earlier adult life and most commonly occurred on the fingers (35 cases), frequently as subungual nodules (26 cases). Other sites of occurrence were the forearm in seven, the knee in seven, and the leg in six. All patients but one complained of pain. Histologically, the tumors, showing endothelium-lined vascular spaces surrounded by masses of epithelioid cells, could be divided into three varieties: vascular (29 cases), myxoid (23 cases), and solid (11 cases). Under electron microscope the tumor cells in four cases proved to be smooth-muscle cells. The clinicopathologic evidence presented supports the hypothesis that the glomus tumor is a tumor-like lesion of mesodermal disorder rather than a true neoplasm.

TL;DR: In this article, a special case of kink dynamics of nonlinear wave equations is found to reduce to the Toda lattice dynamics, which corresponds to the momentum conservation law for wave equations.
Abstract: A certain class of nonlinear evolution equations of one space dimension which permits kink type solutions and includes one-dimensional time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations and certain nonlinear wave equations is studied in some strong coupling approximation where the problem can be reduced to the study of kink dynamics. A detailed study is presented for the case of TDGL equation with possible applications to the late stage kinetics of order-disorer phase transitions and spinodal decompositions. A special case of kink dynamics of nonlinear wave equations is found to reduce to the Toda lattice dynamics. A new conservation law for dissipative systems is found which corresponds to the momentum conservation law for wave equations.

Abstract: Mesial-distal and buccal-lingual crown measurements were made on male and female samples of recent Japanese teeth from three locations, Fukuoka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, and for Hokkaido Ainu and Koreans. Similar data were collected for prehistoric Middle-to-Late Jomon Japanese and from Yayoi specimens representing the first agriculturalists to appear in Japan. From a tooth-by-tooth comparison of cross-sectional areas, it was shown that the modern Japanese samples did not differ from one part of Japan to another. Korean tooth size also is not significantly different from Japanese, while Ainu have the smallest teeth recorded in Asia. The Yayoi who brought rice to Japan about 300 B.C. came in with teeth that were the same size as Chinese Neolithic teeth. They encountered a resident Jomon population whose teeth were 10% smaller. From tooth size measures alone, it is most economical to suggest that, if the rates of reduction observed elsewhere in the world applied in Japan, the recent Ainu would best be regarded as the direct descendants of the Jomon, while the modern Japanese are the results of in situ reduction from the incoming Yayoi. Other aspects of craniofacial morphology suggest that some Jomon was incorporated by the Yayoi. The modern Japanese, then, while predominantly derived from the Yayoi, would include a Jomon component.

TL;DR: The data indicate that the elevated daytime serum levels of melatonin in patients with liver cirrhosis are due to decreased clearance, probably related to decreased liver blood flow, lowered activity of 6 beta-hydroxylase, and competition with bilirubin in the intrahepatic transport system.
Abstract: To evaluate the influence of changes in liver function on serum levels of melatonin, we measured serum levels and MCR of the hormone in patients with liver cirrhosis and in healthy control subjects. Daytime (0900-1100 h) serum levels of melatonin in patients with liver cirrhosis were significantly elevated compared to those in healthy subjects. Significant positive correlations of the daytime serum levels of melatonin with the serum retention rate of indocyanine green dye and serum levels of total bilirubin were noted. The clearance of melatonin from blood showed a biphasic first-order kinetic pattern. The half-life of each phase was significantly prolonged in patients with cirrhosis compared to healthy subjects. Our data indicate that the elevated daytime serum levels of melatonin in patients with liver cirrhosis are due to decreased clearance, probably related to decreased liver blood flow, lowered activity of 6 beta-hydroxylase, and competition with bilirubin in the intrahepatic transport system.

TL;DR: The rate of amino acid replacement in the immunoglobulin Ck gene of b4 rabbit is unexpectedly high, almost comparable to the rate of silent changes, and a new molecular clock is proposed which has several advantages over a protein clock.
Abstract: For each of eleven different types of nuclear genes, comparisons of the protein coding sequences were made between human, mouse and rat pairwisely, and the evolutionary rate of silent substitution, vSnucl, was estimated It is shown that the vSnucl is not only very high (=537×10−9/site/yr), but also approximately uniform for different genes regardless of the types, which confirms our previous results (Miyata et al 1980b) This is in sharp contrast to the rate of protein evolution which differes greatly from protein to protein Furthermore the vSnucl is shown to be approximately constant with respect to different divergence times, at least within a short time period (≤75 Myr) Based on these observations, we propose a new molecular clock which has several advantages over a protein clock Using this clock, we show that the rate of amino acid replacement in the immunoglobulin Ck gene of b4 rabbit is unexpectedly high, almost comparable to the rate of silent changes This rate may be the highest one for protein evolution that we know so far We further examine the rate of silent substitutions in mitochondrial genes comparing mouse and rat Surprisingly the rate is extremely high (≥35×10−9/site/yr), at least 6-times as high as the corresponding rate of nuclear genes Based on the estimate, we discuss a possible origin of the rapid rate found in mitochondrial DNA

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the spatial growth of mechanically generated water waves under the action of wind in a laboratory wind-wave flume both for pure water and for water containing a surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate, concentration 2.6 × 10−2%).
Abstract: Spatial growth of mechanically generated water waves under the action of wind has been measured in a laboratory wind-wave flume both for pure water and for water containing a surfactant (sodium lauryl sulphate, concentration 2.6 × 10−2%). I n the latter case, no wind waves develop on the surface of the mechanically generated waves as well as on the still water surface for wind speeds up to U10≈ 15 m/s, where U10 is the wind velocity at the height Z = 10 m. Therefore we can study the wind-induced growth of monochromatic waves without the effects of co-existing short wind waves. The mechanically generated waves grew exponentially under the action of the wind, with fetch in both cases. The measured growth rate β for the pure water can be fitted by β/f = 0.34(U*/C)2 0.1 [lsime ] U*/C [lsime ] 1.0, where f is the frequency of the waves, C is the corresponding phase velocity, and U, is the friction velocity obtained from vertical wind profiles. The effect of the wave steepness H/L on the dimensionless growth rate β/f is not clear, but seems to be small. For water containing the surfactant, the measured growth rate is smaller than that for pure water, but the friction velocity of the wind is also small, and the above relation between β/f and U*/C holds approximately if the measured friction velocity U* is used for the relation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the mean-pressure distribution and the Strouhal number on a smooth circular cylinder, circular cylinders with distributed roughness, and cylinders with narrow roughness strips were made over a Reynolds-number range 4.0 × l0 4 to 1.7 × l 0 6 in a uniform flow.
Abstract: Measurements of’ the mean-pressure distribution and the Strouhal number on a smooth circular cylinder, circular cylinders with distributed roughness, and circular cylinders with narrow roughness strips were made over a Reynolds-number range 4.0 × l0 4 to 1.7 × l0 6 in a uniform flow. A successful high-Reynolds-number (trans- critical) simulation for a smooth circular cylinder is obtained using a smooth circular cylinder with roughness strips. High-Reynolds-number simulation can only be obtained by roughness strips and not by distributed roughness. A similarity parameter correlating the pressure distributions on circular cylinders with distributed roughness in the supercritical range is presented. The same parameter can also be applicable to the drag coefficients of spheres with distributed roughness.

TL;DR: Physical injuries including operations including operations may be a predisposing factor to the development of Creutzfeldt‐Jakob disease.
Abstract: Sixty cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease reported from 902 neurological clinics throughout Japan between 1975 and 1977 were examined in a retrospective case control study. Histories were obtained from patients, sex-matched neighbors, and spouses. No association was observed in either sex with five socioeconomic variables; exposures to eight species of animals; ingestion of raw meat or quadruped brains; eighteen diseases, allergies or immunizations; tooth extraction; blood transfusion; or lumbar puncture. Surgical operations within five years before disease onset were reported for 25.9% and 7.8% of male patients and pooled controls and for 24.2% and 9.6% of female patients and controls. Mechanical injuries were observed for the same period in 33.3% and 9.8% of male patients and controls and in 18.2% and 13.5% of female patients and controls. The operations and mechanical injuries varied in all groups as to body parts affected and nature of the lesions. Physical injuries including operations may be a predisposing factor to the development of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Language: en

TL;DR: Effects of acetylcholine (ACh), caffeine and procaine on the membrane and mechanical properties of the intact and skinned muscle cells of the porcine coronary artery were investigated using the micro‐electrode and isometric tension recording methods.
Abstract: Effects of acetylcholine (ACh), caffeine and procaine on the membrane and mechanical properties of the intact and skinned muscle cells of the porcine coronary artery were investigated using the micro-electrode and isometric tension recording methods.1. ACh (10(-8)-10(-5)m) had no effect on the membrane potential and membrane resistance, as assessed from the current-voltage relationship.2. Caffeine possessed dual actions on the membrane property, i.e. a low concentration (0.3-1 mm) hyperpolarized and a high concentration (over 1 mm) depolarized the membrane, while caffeine (over 0.3 mm) consistently increased the ionic conductance of the membrane. Procaine (over 1 mm) depolarized the membrane and decreased the ionic conductance of the membrane.3. The spike and contraction evoked by outward current pulses in the presence of 10 mm-TEA were suppressed by treatment with caffeine (5 mm) or procaine (3 mm), but the spike was slightly and the electrically induced contraction was significantly suppressed by ACh (10(-6)m) due to the marked increase in resting tension.4. In Ca-free 2 mm-EGTA containing solution, the K-induced contraction (118 mm) rapidly ceased, but not the contraction evoked by ACh (10(-5)m) or caffeine (5 mm). The ACh-induced contraction rapidly ceased in the presence of 1 mm-procaine; however, over 5 mm-procaine was required to abolish the caffeine-induced contraction.5. The pCa-tension relationship was measured in saponin-treated skinned muscles. The minimum concentration of free Ca required to produce contraction was 2 x 10(-7)m, while maximum contraction was observed at 10(-5)m-free Ca. The maximum amplitude of Ca-induced contraction observed in skinned muscles was larger or the same as that evoked by ACh in the intact muscle. ACh (10(-5)m), caffeine (5 mm) and procaine (5 mm) had no effect on the pCa-tension relationship.6. After Ca has been loaded in skinned muscles, caffeine and replacement of K with choline (116 mm) in the Ca-free EGTA containing solution produced the contraction. However, the application of ACh did not result in a release of the stored Ca, and procaine suppressed the release of Ca activated by caffeine.7. The present results indicate that ACh activates the muscarinic receptor distributed on the plasma membrane, thus releasing the stored Ca. However, this mechanism may not be a prerequisite for direct action of ACh on the Ca releasing site. The possible mechanism of ACh action on the Ca releasing site, mainly sarcoplasmic reticulum, was discussed in relation to actions of caffeine and procaine, particularly with regard to the functional relations between plasma membrane and sarcoplasmic reticulum.

TL;DR: It is suggested that there may be a structural abnormality in the forearm resistance vessels in normotensive subjects with family history of hypertension, and forearm vascular responses to ice on the forehead was greater in subjects with hypertensive relatives than those with no family history.
Abstract: The study was performed to determine whether there is a structural vascular abnormality in normotensive subjects with hypertensive relatives. We examined maximal vasodilator capacity of forearm resistance vessels in 23 normotensive young men (mean blood pressure 94 +/- 0.4 mm Hg, mean +/- SE) with hypertensive relatives (age 24 +/- 0.1 years) and in 17 normotensive subjects (mean blood pressure 85 +/- 0.4 mm Hg) with no family history of hypertension (age 24 +/- 0.1 years). Maximal vasodilator capacity was examined by measuring minimal vascular resistance during peak reactive hyperemia after release from 10 minutes of arterial occlusion. Minimal forearm vascular resistance after release from 10 minutes of arterial occlusion was 25% higher (P less than 0.02) in subjects with hypertensive relatives (2.0 +/- 0.02 units) than that in subjects with no family history (1.5 +/- 0.01) units. We confirmed the previous findings that increasing metabolic vasodilator stimulus by performing intermittent handgrip exercise during 10 minutes of arterial occlusion did not augment peak dilation. This suggests that 10 minutes of arterial occlusion produced maximal vasodilation. Forearm vascular responses to ice on the forehead was greater in subjects with hypertensive relatives than those in subjects with no family history. These results suggest that there may be a structural abnormality in the forearm resistance vessels in normotensive subjects with family history of hypertension.

TL;DR: A patient with carcinomatous peritonitis due to gastric cancer is described, in whom OK‐432‐induced neutrophils may play an important role in his tumor cell destruction in ascites, which has no significant effect on DNA synthesis of his tumor cells in vitro.
Abstract: Intraperitoneal injections of OK-432, originated from Group A streptococcus pyogens of human origin, were administered to 77 patients with ascites caused by cancer of the digestive tract. Complete disappearance of effusion was observed in 43 cases, its reduction in five out of 77. They received cytologic examination of ascites daily before and after OK-432 injection. One of these patients, a 77-year-old man with carcinomatous peritonitis due to gastric cancer, showed an interesting phenomenon after OK-432 injection. All adenocarcinoma cells in his ascites disappeared at least within 36 hours after OK-432 injection with increasing number of intraperitoneal neutrophils. In addition, neutrophils collected from his ascites or peripheral blood showed cytostatic effect on his ascites-derived tumor cells in vitro. His neutrophil-depleted intraperitoneal cells, however, had no significant effect on DNA synthesis of his tumor cells in vitro. OK-432 itself had no significant effect on DNA synthesis of his tumor cells in vitro. This report describes a patient in whom OK-432-induced neutrophils may play an important role in his tumor cell destruction in ascites. Cancer 50:62–;68, 1982.

TL;DR: Arginine:lysine was more effective in regulating serum triglyceride than serum cholesterol, and Insulin was associated with different effects of these proteins on serum lipids.
Abstract: 1. The effect of variation in arginine: lysine on the relative cholesterolaemic effects of dietary soya-bean protein and casein was studied. Male rats received semi-purified diets containing soya-bean protein isolate or casein supplemented respectively with varying amounts of lysine or arginine for 40 d and blood samples were taken after a 5 h fast. 2. Neither the addition of arginine to casein nor lysine to soya-bean protein modified the intrinsic effect of these proteins on serum cholesterol. 3. Serum triglyceride levels tended to rise with increasing amounts of lysine supplementation. The opposite trend was obtained with arginine supplementation. 4. Casein caused an increase in the concentration of serum insulin, but not glucagon. The glucagon level was increased proportionately with increasing amounts of arginine, while the addition of lysine showed no effect. The effects of added amino acids on serum insulin were inconclusive. 5. There was a parallel increase in serum apo E and glucagon in response to arginine supplementation, while lysine supplementation increased serum apo E. 6. Thus, arginine: lysine was more effective in regulating serum triglyceride than serum cholesterol. Insulin was associated with different effects of these proteins on serum lipids.
