TL;DR: SoA and YGM extracts gave more potent maltase inhibitory activities than those of the free AGH assay, with IC(50) values of 0.17 and 0.26 mg/mL, respectively, indicating that anthocyanins would have a potential function to suppress the increase in postprandial glucose level from starch.
Abstract: α-Glucosidase (AGH) inhibitory study by natural anthocyanin extracts was done. As the result of a free AGH assay system, 12 anthocyanin extracts were found to have a potent AGH inhibitory activity;...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed the findings of Bridgman and his successors from 1935 to 1988 using the HPT method and summarized their historical importance in recent advancement of materials, properties, phase transformations and HPT machine designs.
Abstract: High-pressure torsion (HPT) method currently receives much attention as a severe plastic deformation (SPD) technique mainly because of the reports of Prof. Ruslan Z. Valiev and his co-workers in 1988. They reported the efficiency of the method in creating ultrafine-grained (UFG) structures with predominantly high-angle grain boundaries, which started the new age of nanoSPD materials with novel properties. The HPT method was first introduced by Prof. Percy W. Bridgman in 1935. Bridgman pioneered application of high torsional shearing stress combined with high hydrostatic pressure to many different kinds of materials such as pure elements, metallic materials, glasses, geological materials (rocks and minerals), biological materials, polymers and many different kinds of organic and inorganic compounds. This paper reviews the findings of Bridgman and his successors from 1935 to 1988 using the HPT method and summarizes their historical importance in recent advancement of materials, properties, phase transformations and HPT machine designs.

TL;DR: This paper presents a novel control system to drive a vehicle efficiently on roads containing varying traffic and signals at intersections for improved fuel economy using a model predictive control method.
Abstract: Energy consumption of a vehicle is greatly influenced by its driving behavior in highly interacting urban traffic. Strategies for fuel efficient driving have been studied and experimented with in various conceptual frameworks. This paper presents a novel control system to drive a vehicle efficiently on roads containing varying traffic and signals at intersections for improved fuel economy. The system measures the relevant information of the current road and traffic, predicts the future states of the preceding vehicle, and computes the optimal vehicle control input using model predictive control (MPC). A typical control objective is chosen to maximize fuel economy by regulating a safe head-distance or cruising at the optimal velocity under bounded driving torque condition. The proposed vehicle control system is evaluated in urban traffic containing thousands of diverse vehicles using the microscopic traffic simulator AIMSUN. Simulation results show that the vehicles controlled by the proposed MPC method significantly improve their fuel economy.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate dose dependent efficacy and safety of oral tacrolimus for remission-induction therapy of refractory active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients.
Abstract: Background and aims: Immunosuppressive therapy with intravenous ciclosporin is an alternative treatment option to total colectomy for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), while the benefits of oral administration of tacrolimus are not well defined and are based on reports of several uncontrolled studies. Methods: Patients with refractory active UC were randomly assigned to a high trough concentration (10–15 ng/ml) group (HT group) (n = 21), low trough concentration (5–10 ng/ml) group (LT group) (n = 22), or placebo group (n = 20). Patients received an initial oral dose of 0.05 mg/kg tacrolimus or placebo twice daily. Efficacy was evaluated in 60 patients based on a disease activity index (DAI) score. Fifty eight patients had additional treatment with tacrolimus and were evaluated for efficacy in a 10 week open label extension. Results: An improvement in DAI score (⩾4 points, all categories improved) was observed for 68.4% of cases in the HT group compared with 10.0% in the placebo group (p Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate dose dependent efficacy and safety of oral tacrolimus for remission-induction therapy of refractory UC. The optimal target range appears to be 10–15 ng/ml in terms of efficacy with two week therapy.
