TL;DR: The leaf oils of two varieties of Eucalyptus camaldulensis growing in Nigeria were analyzed by GC and GC/MS as mentioned in this paper, and quantitatively significant constituents in die leaf oil of the two E. camaldus varieties were β-pinene (9.0-17.5%), 1,8-cineole (32.8-70.4%), (Z)-β-ocimene (11.6%) and α-pinenes (8.8%).

Monoterpenoids also made up the bulk of the two volatile oils (89.0–95.7%).

TL;DR: The observation that MBL is also associated with protection in schistosomiasis is supported, as findings from the recently published study established certain FCN2 promoter variants and ficolin-2 serum levels as protective factors against schistOSomiasis.
Abstract: Background. Human ficolin 2 (encoded by FCN2) and mannose-binding lectin (encoded by MBL2) bind to specific pathogen-associated molecular patterns, activate the complement lectin cascade in a similar manner, and are associated with several infectious diseases. Our recently published study established certain FCN2 promoter variants and ficolin-2 serum levels as protective factors against schistosomiasis. Methods. We used the Nigerian cohort from our recently published study, which included 163 Schistosoma haematobium–infected individuals and 183 matched healthy subjects, and investigated whether MBL deficiency and MBL2 polymorphisms are associated with schistosomiasis. Results. MBL serum levels were significantly higher in controls and were associated with protection (P< .0001). The 550H minor allele was significantly associated with protection (P= .03), and the heterozygous genotypes 550HL were observed to confer protection (P= .03). The MBL2*HYPA haplotype was significantly associated with protection (P= .03), with significantly higher serum MBL levels in controls (P= .00073). The heterozygous 6-bp deletion in the promoter was observed to be a susceptibility factor in schistosomiasis (P= .03). Conclusions. In agreement with findings from our recently published study, the findings reported here support the observation that MBL is also associated with protection in schistosomiasis.

TL;DR: This chapter highlights the relevance of genetic diversity studies in intraspecie crop improvement and reviews the various techniques in the measurement.
Abstract: Replacement of landrace and pure line genotypes by frequent hybridization and crossing techniques reduce the genetic variation in cropping programs. Breeders seek to identify crop types that exhibit variation for meaningful breeding work. Knowledge about germplasm diversity and genetic relationship existing in accessions, landraces, lines alien crops, cultivars and varieties is found valuable in improving and increasing genetic variations and developing strategy for conserving and utilization of genetic resources in cropping programs. Several statistical breeding techniques are available in analysis of genetic diversity existing in such diverse plant populations. These techniques have relied on characters from morphological biochemical and molecular based data sets. For accurate and unbiased estimation of genetic diversity critical attention must be given to (i) Data tools measuring genetic distance and genetic groups (ii) data source (iii) objectivity in determination of genetic relationship. Better result analysis and explanation can be provided for genetic diversity measurement using individual and or combined data sets. This chapter highlights the relevance of genetic diversity studies in intraspecie crop improvement and reviews the various techniques in the measurement. TL;DR: Novel object recognition tests revealed that pre-training and pre-test sleep deprivation and caffeine combination impaired non spatial and spatial memory in male and female mice, showing the complex interactions with memory that may arise when total sleep deprivation is superimposed on caffeine administration.
Abstract: Background : Sleep deprivation negatively impacts memory, causing deficits in memory processes. Of interest is any agent that can offset such deficits. Mice were given varying doses of caffeine for 14 days and then deprived of sleep for 6 hours by the ‘gentle handling’ method. Memory was assessed using the Novel Object Recognition Test and Y maze alternation. Purpose : The study was designed to ascertain the impact of varying doses of caffeine combined with total sleep-deprivation on spatial and non spatial memory in mice. Methods : Adult Swiss Webster mice of both sexes were assigned to six groups viz., vehicle (distilled water), or one of five selected doses of caffeine (10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 mg/kg) for 14 days via the oral route. Open field novel object recognition test and Y maze spatial working memory tests were carried out on day 14. Results were analysed using multi-factorial ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test and expressed as mean ± S.E.M, with p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results : Novel object recognition tests (NOR) revealed that pre-training and pre-test sleep deprivation and caffeine combination impaired non spatial and spatial memory in male and female mice. Conclusion: The study showed that the complex interactions with memory that may arise when total sleep deprivation is superimposed with caffeine administration. TL;DR: There is need to establish assisted reproductive technology in public health institutions to render services at a highly subsidized rate in helping this population of patients who could not afford this treatment which is presently being offered by private health institutions.
Abstract: Two hundred and fifty patients attended the gynaecology clinic during the study period, however, 208(83.2%) case notes were available for analysis. Most of the patients that had gynaecological consultations during the study period were married (88.0%), and infertility (48.1%) was the commonest reason for the consultations. Many of the patients (60.1%) did not receive definitive treatment for their consultation. Infertility being the commonest reason for gynaecological consultations, and tubal factor the commonest cause of infertility, there is need to establish assisted reproductive technology in public health institutions to render services at a highly subsidized rate in helping this population of patients who could not afford this treatment which is presently being offered by private health institutions.
