TL;DR: A web framework is proposed for online peer tutoring application in a smart campus that will go a long way in improving students’ academic performance in a more efficient manner.
Abstract: Peer tutoring is a unique and efficient method of teaching that has been widely investigated. Related works in the literature ranges from cross-age peer tutoring, peer tutoring for the disabled, reciprocal peer tutoring, to peer tutoring for children. One unique method that has been scarcely documented, however, is peer tutoring with the aid of the Internet. In this paper, therefore, a web framework is proposed for online peer tutoring application in a smart campus. The peer tutoring web application identifies two key target users: the tutor and the tutee. The tutors will help in teaching other students; they are responsible for accepting requests from tutees and in turn holding tutoring sessions for the tutees. They also have the responsibility of uploading important documents to the platform which are accessible to tutees. On the other hand, the tutees search for the tutors with prowess in their course of need and make a request for a tutoring session. They also have access to the materials uploaded by the tutors. The peer tutoring web application is designed in such a way that the web browser communicates with the web server by making Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request to the server. The proposed framework consists of the client-side and the server-side which are connected by the web browser. In essence, web-based peer tutoring application will go a long way in improving students’ academic performance in a more efficient manner.

TL;DR: The Pseudomonas aeruginosa species harboured by in-pat patients showed higher rates of antibiotic resistance than those of the out-patients and amikacin and ciprofloxacin were the two antibiotics found to be most potent against this pathogen.
Abstract: Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been reported to be a leading cause ofnosocomial infections. Resistance of this notorious bacterium to commonly used antimicrobial agents is becoming an increasing clinical problem and a recognized public health threat because there are limited number of antimicrobial agents including the antipseudomonal penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones with reliable activity against it. This study was therefore carried out, using Bauer-Kirby method, to determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from in-patients and out-patients attending the University College Hospital, Ibadan in Nigeria between June 2004 and May 2006. The isolation rate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in clinical specimens was found to be 16.8% with the highest occurrence of 41.9% in ear swab followed by 39.3% occurrence in wound swab. The susceptibility pattern showed that 78.3% were sensitive to amikacin and 72.0% to ciprofloxacin. The isolates from the in-patients showed higher resistance to all the antibiotics tested than the isolates from the out-patients, most especially amikacin and ciprofloxacin. However, no consistent antibiotic susceptibility pattern could be established for this pathogenic bacterium based on sources. In conclusion, the Pseudomonas aeruginosa species harboured by in-patients showed higher rates of antibiotic resistance than those of the out-patients. Also amikacin and ciprofloxacin were the two antibiotics found to be most potent against this pathogen.

TL;DR: Most of the medical practitioners in Osun State were not knowledgeable about cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, the few with the knowledge were from the tertiary institutions, therefore the need for the creation of more awareness among medical practitioners, especially among those outside tertiary health facilities.
Abstract: Background Cardiopulmonary arrest is not an uncommon event in the medical practice with the causes ranging from reversible to irreversible causes. Therefore the skill in the performance of effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an essential part of successful medical practice. In some developed countries the CPR Training programmes were mandatory for all health care givers and even for non medical workers. However in the setting of ours, the situation is not so as most heath workers go for CPR Training programmes by wish except in some few centres were it is mandatory. Aim & objectives To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of medical practitioners in relation to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation. Setting The study was carried out among medical practitioners in Osun State, Southwest Nigeria. Methods The study was conducted through a survey of medical practitioners in Osun state during an annual general meeting using a self administered questionnaire. Results The response rate was 65% with 65 out of 100 physicians returning the completed questionnaire. Only 40% of respondents had attended a basic and an advanced life support training programme while 30% knew how to operate an automated external defribellator (AED), seventy percent knew the meaning of AED. Most of the respondents that had attended a basic and an advanced life support programme were residents (80%) while 16% were consultants and the remaining 4% were general practitioners. More males (67%) among the respondents that knew how to operate an AED and majority (56%) were in the age range of 30-40years. Eighty two percent of the respondents would prefer to do a chest compression only resuscitation of which 44% were. Conclusion Most of the medical practitioners in Osun State were not knowledgeable about cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation . The few with the knowledge were from the tertiary institutions. There is therefore the need for the creation of more awareness among medical practitioners, especially among those outside tertiary health facilities.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the economic contribution of farm children in agricultural production and identified the personal characteristics of the farm children investigated the major activities and examined the attitude of farmers to farming as an occupation.
Abstract: This study examined the economic contribution of farm children in agricultural production. To achieve this broad objective the research work identified the personal characteristics of the farm children investigated the major activities and examined the attitude of farm children to farming as an occupation. The study also looks into problems of farm children in relation to farm activities or what they detest most in farming. The study area is Ekiti state of Nigeria. The population for the study comprises all children born or nurtured by farming households or by farmer parents and in a village which is predominantly considered as a farming community. Structured interview schedule was used in collecting information from 300 farm children in the study area. Stratified random sampling technique was employed. The results show that gender and age play significant roles in contribution of farm children to agricultural production with calculated 2 =10.035 > tabulated 2 = 9.488; and calculated 2 = 26.557 > tabulated 2 = 21.026 respectively. The study concluded that despite the fact that the interviewed youths contribute immensely to agricultural production most of them are not satisfied with the way farming is being practiced in the study area. They are therefore not encouraged to consider farming as profession. It was recommended that non-government organizations (NGOs) as well as the government should ensure that modern tools and agro-chemicals as well as improved farm technologies essential for farmers on the field are made available at affordable prices. This will lessen the drudgery of farm operations thereby making farm ventures more attractive to youths. (authors)

TL;DR: The results showed that the two plant extracts can be used in the control of insect pests of the watermelon, and the effectiveness of the two plants extracts were concentration dependent.
Abstract: Despite the fact that synthetic insecticides are fast acting, they constitute environmental hazard thereby necessitating the use of ecologically based alternative such as plant based insecticide. This experiment was conducted during the late and early planting seasons of 2011 to determine the insecticidal efficacy of Tephrosia vogelii and Moringa oleifera extracts at three tested concentrations (5, 10 and 20% v/v) against insect pests of watermelon. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The results showed that M. oleifera extracts had 62% reduction of Phyllotreta cruciferae compared with T. vogelii which had 45% control. However, T. vogelii extracts had 64% control of Diabrotica undecimpunctata and Bactrocera curcubitea but M. olefera extracts had 50% control. The plant extracts proved effective against studied insects when compared with untreated plots. However, the effectiveness of the two plants extracts were concentration dependent. Therefore, the two plant extracts can be used in the control of insect pests of the watermelon.
