Abstract: Modern households are becoming more automated thereby delivering convenience and reducing time spent on house chores. While vacuum cleaners have made home cleaning easier, they are largely noisy and bulky for everyday use. It is therefore sine qua non to improve the technology of vacuum cleaning to reduce these deficiencies. Here, we report the development of a compact and efficient vacuum cleaner robot for potential office and home use. The developed robot is disk-shaped, equipped with vacuuming and cleaning technology and controlled by Arduino mega microcontroller. It sucks dirt via a retractable dustbin on top of which a cooling fan is mounted, and two sweepers each driven by a 3 V DC motor. The robot navigates via two motor shield controlled rear wheels and a front caster wheel which also governs its turning. Four ultrasonic sensors, placed at 90° apart, detect obstacles and subsequently help the robot navigate. The robot is powered by 3 batteries (28.8 V DC), rechargeable via an embedded AC-DC adapter. It is 12 cm wide and 9 cm tall making it easy for maneuvering its environment. Because of the light weight battery, cardboard based dustbin and small blower used, its weight is about 1.5 kg. The total current consumed is ∼1102 mA. When fully charged, a 2200 mAh-capacity battery works continuously for two hours and cleans floor efficiently. With this capability, the device will be deployed for office and home use thereby making cleaning a fully autonomous duty.

Abstract: The development of degradable and edible films from protein sources has drawn significant attention for the utilisation of natural resources as well as for the alleviation of the environmental burden. Rice bran protein (RBP) was applied to protein film preparation in this study. The protein solutions were casted on plastic tissue culture dishes with glycerol as a plasticiser after heat treatment. Functional properties of the films were then measured. The puncture strength (PS) of RBP films increased up to pH 8.0 and then decreased. PS of protein films depends on the degree of protein purity, quality and composition. Higher concentration of glycerol weakened the films. The pH affected the water solubility of RBP films and the films showed least solubility at pH 3.0. RBP could be utilised in the preparation of degradable protein-based films. The RBP-based film had functional properties comparable to those of the soy protein-based ones.

Abstract: Forty samples of twenty brands of sachet orange juice products were examined microbiologically. All the products were contaminated with bacteria and yeasts. The organisms encountered include Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomyces sp, Rhodotorula sp, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Micrococcus sp . The resistances of thirty bacterial strains isolated from orange juice products to the commonly used antibiotics were studied. About 66.67% of the isolates were resistant to augmentin and amoxycillin; 63.33% to cotrimoxazole, 56% to cloxacillin, and 23.33% to tetracycline. Resistances of 10, 6.67, and 3.33% were obtained for gentamicin, erythromycin and chloramphenicol respectively. Among the eight antibiotics tested, seven patterns of drug resistance were obtained. Six out of these are multiple-drug resistance with number of antibiotics ranging between 2 to 8. While MIC of amoxycillin ranged between 10-25mg/ml for the strains of E. coli, MIC of 10-20mg/ml was obtained for the strains of S. aureus . The MIC for cloxacillin was 0.1-1.0mg/ml for E. coli strains, and 0.01-1.0mg/ml for S. aureus strains. In all, ten strains of the bacterial isolates had evidence for the production of β-lactamases. Abstract: To investigate the subchronic effect of cadmium intoxication on lipid metabolism and the inflammatory responses accompanying it, rats were administered 50 and 100 ppm cadmium through their drinking water for 7 weeks. At both concentrations, cadmium exposure resulted in significant elevation (p < 0.05) of total cholesterol and gave rise to hypertriglyceridemia in the plasma of the animals. The proinflammatory cytokines, IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-α, were highly expressed in the animals. At the 50 ppm dose level, plasma IL-2, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were increased by 20 %, 87 % and 336 % respectively, while the 100 ppm dose yielded 32 %, 57 % and 470 % increases, respectively. A drastic build-up of MDA in the liver elicited by the metal led to an 85 % increase in lipid peroxidation at high dose. A 3-fold increase of lipid hydroperoxidation (LOOH) products was obtained on exposure to cadmium at 100 ppm. Cadmium caused more than a 2-fold increase in oxLDL levels at both doses tested. Paraoxonase activity was also significantly repressed, culminating in a 43 % reduction in activity at 100 ppm dose. Disruption of lipid metabolism, increased lipid peroxidation as well as imbalance in proinflammatory cytokine levels may thus, be means by which cadmium induces its toxicity.

Abstract: The application of qualitative techniques is increasing and acceptable among the researchers. However, majority of the researchers and postgraduate students did not consider the importance of giving detailed procedures in qualitative data analysis for better understanding of the qualitative results. There is a need to uncover step by step approach in qualitative analysis for better application of qualitative techniques. This article presented a detailed step-by-step approach for qualitative analysis with the aid of a pragmatic illustration. The analytic process presented employed the example of qualitative data transcribed into narrative data to develop basic themes. The employment of Domain Analysis and Thematic Network analysis in the example given helped basic themes to converge to higher order themes. The article submitted that this approach in qualitative analysis will aid thorough understanding of qualitative data interpretation. This is extremely thoughtful approach for the systematic presentation of qualitative analysis.
