TL;DR: In this paper, small group velocities of order 90 m/s and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms were observed in an optically dense hot rubidium gas ( $\ensuremath{\approx}360\mathrm{K}$).
Abstract: We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 m/s and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense hot rubidium gas ( $\ensuremath{\approx}360\mathrm{K}$). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear interactions between very weak optical fields and very sharp spectral features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear spectroscopy of dense coherent media.

TL;DR: Information-based complexity seeks to develop general results about the intrinsic difficulty of solving problems where available information is partial or approximate and to apply these results to specific problems.
Abstract: Information-based complexity seeks to develop general results about the intrinsic difficulty of solving problems where available information is partial or approximate and to apply these results to specific problems. This allows one to determine what is meant by an optimal algorithm in many practical situations, and offers a variety of interesting and sometimes surprising theoretical results.

TL;DR: Examination of the preferences of female guppies from 11 localities in Trinidad shows that females are on average more attracted to males from their own population than from alien populations, and populations appear to vary in the criteria used in female choice.
Abstract: We examined the preferences of female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from 11 localities in Trinidad with respect to male color-pattern elements, body shape and size, and overall color and brightness contrast. Females are on average more attracted to males from their own population than from alien populations, and populations appear to vary in the criteria used in female choice. Multiple-regression analysis suggests that mate-preference criteria vary among localities in intensity, sign, and the number of traits used. Although preference estimators and color-pattern parameters are unique to each population, only orange, black, and color contrast showed a correlation between degree of male trait and degree of preference for that trait. There is a clear effect of water color and a possible effect of predation intensity. The results are discussed in light of various models of sexual selection and the early stages of speciation.

TL;DR: It is concluded that this area of research is ready for a shift to theory-based investigations that test causal models of teacher stress and health with more sophisticated research designs and measurement strategies.
Abstract: The health effects of teacher stress and teacher burnout are reviewed separately in this article. Although the literature generally lends support to the hypothesis that occupational stress and burnout are associated with poor health in teachers, confidence in this conclusion is weakened by the serious methodological and conceptual difficulties that pervade this area of research. In particular, reliance on cross-sectional retrospective designs, exclusive dependence on self-report measures, and failure to adopt a theoretical framework as a guide for empirical investigations are identified as major threats to the validity of the findings reported. It is concluded that this area of research is ready for a shift to theory-based investigations that test causal models of teacher stress and health with more sophisticated research designs and measurement strategies.
