TL;DR: In this paper, the standard error and confidence interval for the MPN estimate of microbial density from a general dilution series were formulated for the standard errors and confidence intervals for the estimation.
Abstract: Equations are formulated for the standard error and confidence interval for the MPN estimate of microbial density from a general dilution series. A statistical test of homogeneity is presented. This tests whether a handling error in the dilution series may have occurred which would invalidate the density estimate. The analysis may be automated using a Basic computer program which contains a fast algorithm for the solution of the general MPN equation. This allows the calculation of the MPN, standard error, 95% confidence interval and test statistic for any dilution series, with any degree of replication at each dilution level, with variable sample volumes at each dilution level, with variable dilution ratio between levels, and with any number of levels.

TL;DR: There is no record of the hydroids Sarsia tubulosa (M. Sars) and Tubularia larynx (Ellis and Solander) living under similar conditions.
Abstract: While it is known that the hydroid Clytiajohnstoni (Alder) may get broken off and drift in the plankton (Russell, personal communication), rounding off into pelagic colonies, there is, however, no record of the hydroids Sarsia tubulosa (M. Sars) and Tubularia larynx (Ellis and Solander) living under similar conditions.

TL;DR: The attitudes of first and second year undergraduate students and staff members to first-year laboratory studies were surveyed by interview and questionnaire administration as mentioned in this paper and the most important educational aims of this course and the degree to which achievement of aim occurred have been determined for both student and faculty groups.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors draw on the empirical study of literacy practices in eight childcare courses in Scotland and England to demonstrate that integral to the learning careers of students are literacy careers through which their learning is mediated.
Abstract: This paper draws from the Literacies for Learning in Further Education research project, funded through the Teaching and Learning Research Programme. Drawing on the empirical study of literacy practices in eight childcare courses in Scotland and England, we seek to demonstrate that, integral to the learning careers of students are literacy careers through which their learning is mediated. In the process, by drawing upon the lens of literacy, we also challenge some of the common‐sense understandings of learning in childcare. In particular, we suggest that the literacy practices of lower level courses can be more diverse than those of higher level courses, producing potentially confusing literacy careers for the students involved. We also highlight the complexity of the range of literacy practices in childcare, which can go unrecognised as requiring explicit tuition, and unacknowledged even when students use them appropriately. Courses in childcare are textually mediated in many different ways, which vary d...
