Abstract: An upwind scheme is presented for solving the three-dimensional Euler equations on unstructured tetrahedral meshes. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite-volume formulation using flux-difference splitting. Higher-order differences are formed by a multidimensional linear reconstruction process. The solution gradients required for the higher-order differenes are computed by a novel approach that yields highly resolved solutions in regions of smooth flow while avoiding oscillations across shocks without explicitly applying a limiter. Solutions are advanced in time by a three-stage Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme with convergence accelerated to steady state by local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing. Transonic solutions are presented for two meshes around the ONERA M6 wing and demonstrate substantial accuracy and insensitivity to mesh size.

Abstract: The Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) has funded the development and installation of five ground-based atmospheric emitted radiance interferometer (AERI) systems at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the AERI instrument, improvement of the AERI temperature and moisture retrieval technique, new profiling utility, and validation of high-temporal-resolution AERI-derived stability indices important for convective nowcasting. AERI systems have been built at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, and deployed in the Oklahoma–Kansas area collocated with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 404-MHz wind profilers at Lamont, Vici, Purcell, and Morris, Oklahoma, and Hillsboro, Kansas. The AERI systems produce absolutely calibrated atmospheric infrared emitted radiances at one-wavenumber resolution from 3 to 20 μm at less than 10-min temporal resolution. Abstract: In a joint project with the FAA, NASA Langley is developing a hardware design in accordance with RTCA DO-254: Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware. The purpose of the case study is to gain understanding of the new guidance document and generate an example suitable for use in training. For the case study, we have selected a core subsystem of the Scalable Processor-Independent Design for Electromagnetic Resilience (SPIDER). SPIDER is a new fault-tolerant architecture under development at NASA Langley Research Center.

Abstract: A comprehensive data base is given for the low speed aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA 0012 airfoil section. The Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel is the facility used to obtain the data. Included in the report are the effects of Mach number and Reynolds number and transition fixing on the aerodynamic characteristics. Presented are also comparisons of some of the results with previously published data and with theoretical estimates. The Mach number varied from 0.05 to 0.36. The Reynolds number, based on model chord, varied from 3 x 10 to the 6th to 12 x 10 to the 6th power.
