TL;DR: This paper found that the urban-rural gap accounts for 40% of mean country inequality and much of its cross-country variation, and that one out of every four or five individuals raised in rural areas moves to urban areas as a young adult, where they earn much higher incomes than nonmigrant rural permanent residents.
Abstract: Using population and product consumption data from the Demographic and Health Surveys, I construct comparable measures of inequality and migration for 65 countries, including some of the poorest countries in the world. I find that the urban-rural gap accounts for 40% of mean country inequality and much of its cross-country variation. One out of every four or five individuals raised in rural areas moves to urban areas as a young adult, where they earn much higher incomes than nonmigrant rural permanent residents. Equally, one out of every four or five individuals raised in urban areas moves to rural areas as a young adult, where they earn much lower incomes than their nonmigrant urban cousins. These flows and relative incomes are suggestive of a world where the population sorts itself geographically on the basis of its human capital and skill. I show that a simple model of this sort explains the urban-rural gap in living standards.

TL;DR: This paper reviewed the large literature on public support for, and opposition to, European integration, focusing on conceptualization, causes, and consequences of public support and opposition in the European Union and found that more work is needed to understand the ways in which opinions are shaped by their national context and how increasing public contestation of the European EU poses a challenge to, and an opportunity for, the future of the integration project.
Abstract: Public opinion is increasingly at the heart of both political and scholarly debates on European integration This article reviews the large literature on public support for, and opposition to, European integration, focusing on conceptualization, causes, and consequences: What is public support for European integration? How can we explain variation in support and Euroskepticism? What are the consequences of public support for elections and policy making in the European Union? The review reveals that although a growing literature has sought to explain individual support for European integration, more work is needed to understand the ways in which opinions are shaped by their national context and how increasing public contestation of the European Union poses a challenge to, and an opportunity for, the future of the integration project

TL;DR: This article derived the asymptotic distribution of a new backfitting procedure for estimating the closest additive approximation to a nonparametric regression function, which employs a recent projection interpretation of popular kernel estimators provided by Mammen, Marron, Turlach and Wand.
Abstract: We derive the asymptotic distribution of a new backfitting procedure for estimating the closest additive approximation to a nonparametric regression function. The procedure employs a recent projection interpretation of popular kernel estimators provided by Mammen, Marron, Turlach and Wand and the asymptotic theory of our estimators is derived using the theory of additive projections reviewed in Bickel, Klaassen, Ritov and Wellner. Our procedure achieves the same bias and variance as the oracle estimator based on knowing the other components, and in this sense improves on the method analyzed in Opsomer and Ruppert. We provide ‘‘high level’’ conditions independent of the sampling scheme. We then verify that these conditions are satisfied in a regression and a time series autoregression under weak conditions.

TL;DR: The cultural psychology of creativity as discussed by the authors investigates the sociocultural roots and dynamics of all our creative acts and employs a tetradic framework of self, community, new artifact and existing artifacts in its conceptualization of creativity.
